A CONVERSATION WITH JOE DOOB
J. LAURIE SNELL
This was the basis for an article in Statistical Science Vol. 12, No. 4, November 1997
Abstract: Joseph L. Doob was born in Cincinnati Ohio, February 27, 1910. He received the degrees: AB in 1930, AM in 1931, and PhD in 1932 from Harvard University. From 1932 to 1934 Doob did postdoctoral work at Columbia University. In 1933-1934 he held a Carnegie Corporation Fellowship. Doob was a member of the faculty of the University of Illinois from 1935 until his retirement in 1978. He was Commissar of the Champaign-Urbana Saturday Hike for about 25 years after World War II. Doob is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and Foreign Associate of the Academy of Sciences, France. He was President of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 1950 and of the American Mathematical Society in 1963 and 1964. He received the National Medal of Science in 1979. In 1984 Doob was awarded the Career Prize by the American Mathematical Society for "his fundamental work in establishing probability as a branch of mathematics and for his continuing profound influence on its development." Doob as President of AMS (1963 and 1964)

Joseph Doob 's parents were Mollie Doerfler and Leo Doob. Joseph's interest in science started when he was at grammar school. There he became interested in radio and constructed his own crystal radio set. When he was at high school his interest in radio increased. He learnt Morse code, obtained a licence to transmit radio signals, and started to use a radio transmitter which he had built himself. At this stage in his education, given his hobby, he felt that physics was the right subject for him to study at university, and having sought advice from the principal of his high school, he applied to study at Harvard. When he entered Harvard in September 1926 he registered for courses in physics but, by the end of his first year of study, Doob had decided that he did not want to proceed to a physics degree. His favourite course during his first year had been calculus and its applications so, since he had always enjoyed mathematics, there was an obvious direction in which to take his studies. In his second year of study Doob registered for courses in mathematics. He was taught calculus by

Joseph Doob, a Math Pioneer, Dies at 94
Joseph Leo Doob, a pioneer in the study of the mathematical foundations of probability theory and its remarkable interplay with other areas of mathematics, died June 7, 2004, in Urbana, Illinois, where he lived most of his life, arriving in 1935 as a new faculty member of the University of Illinois. He was mentally, physically, and socially active until two weeks before his sudden death when he was diagnosed with the liver cancer that caused it. He was 94. Probability has been a subject of mathematical exploration for more than 300 years, but it was given a firm mathematical foundation much later, mostly by mathematicians such as Kolmogorov in Russia and Doob in America, beginning in the 1930s. Doob in his 1937 paper gave a rigorous mathematical framework for the study of continuous parameter stochastic processes, that is, families of measurable functions indexed by a parameter such that the family is pointwise continuous in the parameter (an example is the mathematical model for the Brownian motion of a particle in Euclidean space with time as the parameter). He accomplished all of this and more, including important work in complex function theory and ergodic theory, by the age of 45. Up to 68, when he retired from his teaching (and he claimed that he was retiring from mathematics as well), he also accomplished much including new work in axiomatic potential theory and Choquet boundary theory. But after his "retirement" he continued to be active mathematically. This included writing a number of papers and books, one entitled "Classical Potential Theory and Its Probabilistic Counterpart" is well over 800 pages long. A glimpse of his personality and mathematical style can be found in his vivid autobiographical remarks contained in the November 1997 issue of Statistical Science.

Record of the Celebration of the Life of Joseph Leo Doob (held in October 2004) One of the important elements in Doob's life was the Saturday Hike. Another important element was music. So it was fitting that the Celebration began with music played by another Saturday Hiker, Rudolph Haken . Professor Haken , a faculty member of the School of Music, played three movements of the viola version of J. S. Bach's Suite III in C-Major, BMV 1009, originally composed for the unaccompanied cello. The speakers followed. Here their remarks about Doob are revisions and expansions of their oral presentations. Steve Doob (the oldest of Joe and Elsie's three children): First, I'd like to say how devoted my father was to an organization called "The Hike." It is made up mostly of university professors who meet every Saturday afternoon at 2 and drive to one of the innumerable spots along local rivers where they have been hiking for nearly a century. Some of them make a campfire, while the more adventuresome build up their appetites by hiking for an hour or so. And a good appetite is what you need for the meal that follows. From the heart healthy "Hikers' Delight" (onions, cheese and hot peppers fried in bacon grease) slathered over
