Simon Donaldson 's secondary school education was at Sevenoaks School in Kent which he attended from 1970 to 1975. He then entered Pembroke College, Cambridge where he studied until 1980, receiving his B.A. in 1979. One of his tutors at Cambridge described him as a very good student but certainly not the top student in his year. Apparently he would always come to his tutorials carrying a violin case. In 1980 Donaldson began postgraduate work at Worcester College, Oxford, first under Nigel Hitchen's supervision and later under Atiyah 's supervision. Atiyah writes in [2]:- In , when he was a second-year graduate student, Simon Donaldson proved a result that stunned the mathematical world. This result was published by Donaldson in a paper Self-dual connections and the topology of smooth 4- manifolds which appeared in the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society in 1983.

    Right Midfield ... Captain In the search for the lynch-pin of the defence, an increased selection panel of 33 invited four Central Defenders down to the electronic training ground called Ramsnetters. The four players were: Roy McFarland, Colin Todd, Igor Stimac and Mark Wright. Once again there was much debate as to which defender should join Peter Shilton in the Rams Greatest Team. Here's a summary of the debate:- David Groves: I'd have to go for Colin Todd - a great passer of the ball and versatile (could also play at full-back). Steve Barrett: I'd definitely go for (Ooh) Mark Wright; even classier than Igor... Simon Fry: Thought after not managing to respond to the last vote I ought to get in quick with this one, Roy McFarland. Never saw him play, but am continually told by older relations that he was far better than any of the defenders of my era, of which the two best have to be Mark Wright and Igor Stimac. Tom Butcher: Stimac.

    Right Midfield Left Midfield ... Captain The Fourth Phase of the Rams Greatest Team selection process saw 5 Right Backs invited to the Ramsnet electronic training ground. The 5 players were: Tom Cooper, Rory Delap, David Langan, Rod Thomas and Ron Webster. A selection committee of 25 met to discuss the merits of the leading contenders. Dave: Going to go with Tommy Cooper on this one; heavily influenced by my Dad who saw him play regular. If he was good enough to captain England, that says it all for me. In my lifetime we've had some really good right backs without any outstanding one. Mike Trapido: I am going for Rod Thomas but I doubt many will agree with me. Craig Gutteridge: This is tricky we've not really had a star right back. After conferring with my Dad I've gone for Ron Webster, a bit of a Jacob Laursen style solid, no-nonsense defender. Derby born and bred too, so I believe... Nolan Waugh: In the time I have been supporting the Rams there have only been two outstanding right backs, Ron Webster and David Langan. Although Rod Thomas was quite useful. Webster was very dependable but Langan was a real class act (sad to hear of his current situation). So my vote goes to Davy boy.

    The geometry group will play a leading role in the new Institute for Mathematical sciences to be opened at Imperial College. The Institute aims to bring together researchers for medium term research programmes, whilst also training outstanding young mathematicians and encouraging the interaction of young researchers with more senior researchers from around the world. There are currently job opportunities available at the Institute for which geometers are encouraged to apply. They include visiting positions, post-doctoral fellowships and PhD studentships.
    Areas of research interest
    Back to top The geometry group at Imperial carries out research in several areas, ranging through differential and algebraic geometry and geometric group theory. Topics currently being researched include:
    • symplectic geometry; gauge-theory and differential topology of 3- and 4-manifolds; Calabi-Yau manifolds, mirror symmetry, conformal field theories;
