Dirichlet, Johann Peter Gustav Lejeune Belgický matematik, který žil a pracoval pøedevším ve Francii a pozdìji v Nìmecku. Po smrti Gausse mu byl nabídnut jeho post v Göttingen. Zabýval se øešením Fermatova teorému (neexistence øešení rovnice x n y n z n v celoèíselném oboru) pro n = 5 a 14. Studoval polynomiální rovnice a intenzivnì se zabýval teorií èísel. V mechanice studoval potenciály rovnovážných systémù. Hledal øešení Laplaceovy rovnice s pevnì danými okrajovými podmínkami (dnes nazývanými Dirichletovy podmínky). Dále se zabýval konvergencí trigonometrických øad, které se používaly k øešení parciálních diferenciálních rovnic.

De historie van Voronoi Het Voronoi-diagram is vernoemd naar de Rus Georgi Voronoi (1868-1908). Hij heeft de diagrammen wel veel gebruikt in zijn onderzoek, maar ze niet bedacht. Wel heeft hij de mogelijkheden van de dus al bestaande diagrammen uitgebreid tot n-dimensionaal. De vernoeming van de diagrammen naar Voronoi is dus eigenlijk een te grote eer voor hem. Die eer had eigenlijk moeten gaan naar een Fransman, Lejeune Dirichlet. De eerste berichten over het gebruik van de methode die nu Voronoi heet, stammen namelijk al uit 1850. (Georgi Voronoi was toen nog niet eens geboren!) Lejeune Dirichlet (1805-1895) publiceerde in dat jaar een deel van zijn werk. Daarin stond een verslag van zijn onderzoek naar kwadratische vormen. Hij gebruikte hiervoor twee- en driedimensionale Voronoi-diagrammen. Mede omdat Voronoi de diagrammen eigenlijk onterecht naar zich vernoemd heeft gekregen, zijn er ook andere namen voor de diagrammen in gebruik. Logischerwijs is er ook een naar de eigenlijke ontdekker Dirichlet genoemd, de Dirichlet-polygoon. In de geografie, waar de diagrammen eveneens worden gebruikt, heetten ze meestal Thiessen-polygoon, naar de klimatoloog A. J. Thiessen. Hij gebruikte in 1911 bij de berekening van neerslaghoeveelheden Voronoi-diagrammen.
