Dirichlet, Peter Gustav Lejeune Born: Feb. 13, 1805, DŸren, French Empire [now in Germany] Died: May 5, 1859, Gšttingen, Hanover German mathematician who made valuable contributions to number theory, analysis, and mechanics. He taught at the universities of Breslau (1827) and Berlin (1828-55) and in 1855 succeeded Carl Friedrich Gauss at the University of Gšttingen. Dirichlet made notable contributions still associated with his name in many fields of mathematics. In number theory he proved the existence of an infinite number of primes in any arithmetic series a b a b a b na b , in which a and b are not divisible by one another. He developed the general theory of units in algebraic number theory. His Vorlesungen Ÿber Zahlentheorie (1863; "Lectures Concerning Number Theory"), with later addenda, contains some material important to the theory of ideals. In 1837 Dirichlet proposed the modern concept of a function y f x ) in which for every x , there is associated with it a unique y . In mechanics he investigated the equilibrium of systems and potential theory, which led him to the Dirichlet problem concerning harmonic functions with prescribed boundary values. Es sah so aus, als ob im eine lange Schaffenszeit in Göttingen bevorstünde. Das Schicksal aber war brutal: Nach knapp vier Jahren starb er am 5. Mai 1859. Seine Frau Rebecca geb. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, eine Schwester des Komponisten, war ihm um einige Monate im Tod vorausgegangen. Sie sind auf dem alten Bartholomäus-Friedhof begraben. Dirichlet wurde am 13. Februar 1805 in Düren bei Aachen geboren. Sein Vater war dort Postkommissar. Auf dem Gymnasium in Köln gehörte zu seinen Lehrern der Entdecker des Gesetzes über den elektrischen Widerstand, Georg Simon Ohm. Seine Eltern wollten, daß er Jura studierte. Er überredete sie jedoch, ihm das Mathematikstudium zu erlauben. Im Mai 1822 ging er nach Paris, wo das mathematische Leben am aktivsten war. Im Jahr darauf wurde er Hauslehrer bei General Foy, einem geistvollen, vielseitig gebildeten Mann. Dirichlet war sehr glücklich in dieser Stellung, die ihm viel Zeit für eigene Studien ließ. Aus dem etwas schüchternen Schüler wurde ein gebildeter und geselliger junger Mann. In dieser Pariser Zeit lernte Dirichlet die führenden französischen Mathematiker kennen. Mit J.-L. Fourier und seinem Kreis hat er besonders freundliche Beziehungen gehabt. 1826 kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück, zuerst als Privatdozent nach Breslau, bald als Lehrer an der Allgemeinen Kriegsschule in Berlin, später wurde er unter Beibehaltung dieser Pflichten Professor an der dortigen Universität. Diese Doppelbelastung war mit ein Grund, der ihn bewog, 1855 den Ruf nach Göttingen anzunehmen.

Winter 2004 Bernhard Riemann's 'Dirichlet's Priniciple' In his revolutionary essay of 1857, Theory of Abelian Functions, Enter Lejeune Dirichlet Johann Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet was a pivotal figure in early Nineteenth-century science. Born in 1805 to a family of Belgian origin living near Aachen, his early education took place in Bonn. At the age of 16, with a copy of Gauss's Disquisitiones Arithmeticae Theory of Abelian Functions, The Potential General Theory of Earthmagnetism Gauss recognized that the first step in both geodesy and geomagnetism was the measurement of changes in the effects both phenomena had on the measuring instruments. In the case of geodesy, this meant changes in the direction of a plumb bob, or plane level, as those changes were mapped onto the celestial sphere. The case of geomagnetism is more complicated. Here, changes in the direction of a compass needle were being measured, with respect to three directions and time. The general question was: What is the characteristic nature of the principle of gravitation, or geomagnetism, that would produce these apparent effects? The specific task was: How, from these infinitesimally small, measured changes in the apparent effects, can that general characteristic be determined? The relevant focus for this discussion is the devastating rebuke which Leibniz and Bernoulli delivered to Galileo and Newton over the case of the catenary. Galileo had insisted that all that needed, or could, be known about the catenary, was a description of its visible shape. On the other hand, Leibniz and Bernoulli insisted that the shape of the catenary was merely the visible effect of an underlying physical principle, and that the correct shape could not be determined until the underlying principle was known. As has been developed in previous Pedagogical Exercises

Search MAA Online MAA Home Devlin's Angle March 2003 The Forgotten Revolution We mathematicians are used to the fact that our subject is widely misunderstood, perhaps more than any other subject (except perhaps linguistics). Misunderstandings come on several levels. One misunderstanding is that the subject has little relevance to ordinay life. Many people are simply unaware that many of the trappings of the present-day world depend on mathematics in a fundamental way. When we travel by car, train, or airplane, we enter a world that depends on mathematics. When we pick up a telephone, watch television, or go to a movie; when we listen to music on a CD, log on to the Internet, or cook our meal in a microwave oven, we are using the products of mathematics. When we go into hospital, take out insurance, or check the weather forecast, we are reliant on mathematics. Without advanced mathematics, none of these technologies and conveniences would exist. Another misunderstanding is that, to most people, mathematics is just numbers and arithmetic. In fact, numbers and arithmetic are only a very small part of the subject. To those of us in the business, the phrase that best describes the subject is "the science of patterns," a definition that only describes the subject properly when accompanied by a discussion of what is meant by "pattern" in this context.
