His quantum theory of electron motion led him in 1928 to postulate the existence of a particle identical to the electron in every aspect but charge, the electron having a negative charge and this hypothetical particle a positive one. Dirac's theory was confirmed in 1932 when the American physicist Carl Anderson discovered the positron. In 1933 Dirac shared the Nobel Prize in physics with the Austrian physicist Erwin Schr¶dinger, and in 1939 he was made a fellow of the Royal Society. He was a professor of mathematics at Cambridge from 1932 to 1968, a professor of physics at Florida State University from 1971 until his death, and a member of the Institute for Advanced Study periodically between 1934 and 1959. Dirac, Paul Adrien Maurice (1902-1984)
A British theoretical physicist who played a major role in the development of quantum mechanics and predicted the existence of antiparticles . He made his first great breakthrough at Cambridge University in 1928, when he found a wave equation for the electron proton , were known, and there was no suspicion that others might be waiting in the wings. The prediction was fulfilled four years later when the positron , as it is now called, was first seen. A central theme of Dirac's work was his belief that mathematical rightness and beauty go hand in hand. When a journalist once asked him to explain the concept of mathematical beauty, Dirac asked the journalist "Do you know mathematics?," and when the journalist replied "No," Dirac said, "Then you can't understand the concept of mathematical beauty." A shy, retiring person, Dirac is not as famous as his achievements warrant.

Dirac, Paul Adrien Maurice (1902-1984)
English physicist whose calculations predicted that particles should exist with negative energies. This led him to suggest that the Electron had an " Antiparticle ". This Antielectron was discovered subsequently by Carl Anderson in 1932, and came to be called the Positron . Dirac also developed a "spinor" version of the , known as the Dirac Equation , which is relativistically correct. For his work on antiparticles and wave mechanics, he received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1933.

Paul Dirac: the purest soul in physics
Feature: February 1998 Paul Dirac published the first of his papers on "The Quantum Theory of the Electron" seventy years ago this month. The Dirac equation, derived in those papers, is one of the most important equations in physics.
Genius at work
Each day, I walk past the road where Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac lived as a child. It is pleasant to have even this tenuous association with one of the greatest intellects of the 20th century. Paul Dirac was born at 15 Monk Road in Bishopston, Bristol, on 8 August 1902, and educated at the nearby Bishop Road Primary School. The family later moved to Cotham Road, near the University of Bristol, and in 1914 the young Dirac joined Cotham Grammar School, formerly the Merchant Venturers. Dirac was a student at Bristol University between 1918 and 1923, first in electrical engineering and then in applied mathematics. Much later, he said: "I owe a lot to my engineering training because it [taught] me to tolerate approximations. Previously to that I thought...one should just concentrate on exact equations all the time. Then I got the idea that in the actual world all our equations are only approximate. We must just tend to greater and greater accuracy. In spite of the equations being approximate, they can be beautiful."

Dirac, Einstein and physics
Forum: March 2000 Antonino Zichichi argues that the discoveries made by Paul Dirac had a much bigger impact on the science of the 20th century than those of Albert Einstein. Our greatest endeavour in basic science over the past century has, undoubtedly, been the study of the electromagnetic, strong and weak forces. Although the general theory of relativity was formulated more than 80 years ago, gravitational forces are only now entering the arena of basic scientific research. This is happening because the greatest synthesis of all time, which describes the basic interactions of all the known elementary particles, has finally been achieved in the form of the Standard Model of particle physics. This synthesis is the result of the work of physicists the world over, who have dedicated themselves to the study of what happens when the stable building-blocks of matter (protons, electrons and nuclei) are made to interact at higher and higher energies. The laboratories where physicists have experimentally tested the Standard Model are found around the world, and include famous European names such as CERN in Geneva, the DESY lab near Hamburg, and the Gran Sasso and Frascati labs in Italy. Physicists at Fermilab, Brookhaven and Stanford in the US have also made huge contributions, as have scientists at labs in China, the former Soviet Union and Japan.

http://www.iop.org/diracbio.html
The Bristol-born physicist Paul Dirac was one of the most influential scientists of the twentieth century , writes Peter Rodgers, editor of Physics World . Dirac made many crucial contributions to quantum mechanics, the theory which describes the world on very small scales, and shared the 1933 Nobel Prize for Physics "for the discovery of new and productive forms of atomic theory". Dirac's career Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac was born at 15 Monk Road in Bishopston, Bristol, UK, on 8 August 1902. His father was from Switzerland and taught French at the Merchant Venturers' Technical College in Bristol. His mother was from Cornwall. The young Dirac was educated at the Bishop Road Elementary School and the secondary school of the Merchant Venturers', which later became Cotham Grammar School. In 1918 he entered Bristol University, where he graduated with first-class honours in electrical engineering in 1921. Fascinated by Einstein's theories of relativity, but unable to take up a scholarship at Cambridge University for financial reasons, he stayed at Bristol and graduated in mathematics, again with first-class honours, in 1923. Dirac then moved to St John's College, Cambridge, to do research in theoretical physics under the supervision of Ralph (RH) Fowler of the Cavendish Laboratory. Within a few years Dirac had completed in his Nobel Prize work. In 1932 he was appointed Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, the post once held by Sir Isaac Newton and today by Stephen Hawking.

IOP honours Paul Dirac Tuesday 23 September 1997 The Institute of Physics today honours the brilliant physicist Paul Dirac (1902-1984), by naming its Bristol publishing headquarters Dirac House . A plaque to commemorate the official opening was unveiled by Monic a Dirac, daughter of the Nobel prize-winner. Professor Stephen Hawking, Lucasian professor at Cambridge - a post formerly held by Dirac - has said that his predecessor "did more than anyone this century, with the exception of Einstein, to advance physics and change our picture of the universe". Dirac At today's opening ceremony at Institute of Physics Publishing, guests heard a talk on Dirac's work by Professor Sir Michael Berry of Bristol University. Monica Dirac, who flew over from the USA to perform the ceremony, then gave a personal account of her father's life. Managing Director of Institute of Physics Publishing, Jerry Cowhig, said: "It is particularly apt that Institute of Physics Publishing, one of the world's largest physics publishers, should name its new building after a physicist of international reno wn who was a local Bristol citizen. We are honoured that the Dirac family has consented to the naming and that Monica Dirac is with us today."

His father was a Swiss-born teacher of French, his mother a librarian. Dirac's first degree, obtained at the Merchant Venturer's Technical College, was in electrical engineering, but he had no real interest in the subject and after graduating spent two years studying mathematics at the University of Bristol. In 1923 he left Bristol for Cambridge where he remained for most of his working life.

Dirac's achievements in Cambridge were prodigious. In 1925, while working for his doctorate, he became one of the founders of quantum mechanics when he produced an elegant extension of Heisenberg's work. A little over a year later he presented a very general formulation of quantum mechanics that has remained the basis of the subject ever since. During the next year he essentially founded quantum electrodynamics. In 1928 Dirac took an important step towards bringing quantum physics into conformity with Einstein's
