Diophantus , often known as the 'father of algebra', is best known for his Arithmetica , a work on the solution of algebraic equations and on the theory of numbers. However, essentially nothing is known of his life and there has been much debate regarding the date at which he lived. There are a few limits which can be put on the dates of Diophantus's life. On the one hand Diophantus quotes the definition of a polygonal number from the work of Hypsicles so he must have written this later than 150 BC. On the other hand Theon of Alexandria, the father of Hypatia , quotes one of Diophantus's definitions so this means that Diophantus wrote no later than 350 AD. However this leaves a span of 500 years, so we have not narrowed down Diophantus's dates a great deal by these pieces of information. There is another piece of information which was accepted for many years as giving fairly accurate dates. Heath [3] quotes from a letter by Michael Psellus who lived in the last half of the 11 th century. Psellus wrote (Heath's translation in [3]):-

Diophantus of Alexandria Michael Lahanas Diophant von Alexandrien We know almost nothing about Diophantus, except that he lived, in Alexandria. We know that he quotes Hypsicles (150 BC) and he is quoted by Theon of Alexandria (whose date is fixed by the solar eclipse of June 16, 364 AD ). This tomb hold Diophantus. Ah, what a marvel! And the tomb tells scientifically the measure of his life. God vouchsafed that he should be a boy for the sixth part of his life; when a twelfth was added, his cheeks acquired a beard; He kindled for him the light of marriage after a seventh, and in the fifth year after his marriage He granted him a son. Alas! late-begotten and miserable child, when he had reached the measure of half his father's life, the chill grave took him. After consoling his grief by this science of numbers for four years, he reached the end of his life. J R Newman (ed.) The World of Mathematics (New York 1956). From his epitaph, which can be written as a linear equation x = x/6 + x/12 + x/7 + 5+ x/2 + 4 (where x is the number of years of Diophantus lived ) we find a solution x = 84. We know therefore that he married at the age of 33, had a son who died when he was 42, 4 years before Diophantus himself died. Assumimg that he was born around 200 AD then Diophantus lived in the period (

the Cretan poet Epimenides (Επιμενίδης o Κρης) is attributed to have invented the linguistic paradox with his phrase "Cretans are ever liars" - the Liar's Paradox. 2500 years later, the mathematician Kurt Gödel invents an adaptation of the Liar's Paradox that reveals serious axiomatic problems at the heart of modern mathematics. Thales of Miletus About 530 BC Pythagoras no common rational measure is discoverable About 480 BC
Parmenides of Elea (Παρμενίδης ο Ελεάτης) founded the Eleatic School where he taught that 'all is one,' not an aggregation of units as Pythagoras had said, and that to arrive at a true statement, logical argument is necessary. Truth "is identical with the thought that recognizes it" (Lloyd 1963:327). Change or movement and non-being, he held, are impossibilities since everything is 'full' and 'nothing' is a contradiction which, as such, cannot exist. "Parmenides is said to have been the first to assert that the Earth is spherical in shape...; there was, however, an alternative tradition stating that it was Pythagoras" (Heath 1913:64). Corollary to Parmenides' rejection of the existence of 'nothing' is the Greek number system which, like the later Roman system, refused to use the Babylonian positional number system with its marker for 'nothing.' Making no clear distinction between nature and geometry, "mathematics, instead of being a science of possible relations, was to [the Greeks] the study of situations thought to subsist in nature" (Boyer 1949:25). Moreover, "almost everything in [Greek] philosophy became subordinated to the problem of change.... All temporal changes observed by the senses were mere permutations and combinations of 'eternal principles,' [and] the historical sequence of events (which formed part of the 'flux') lost all fundamental significance" (Toulmin and Goodfield 1965:40).

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Diophantus of Alexandria - Διόφαντος ο Αλεξανδρεύς - (circa - circa ) was an ancient Greek mathematician . He was known for his study of equations with variables which take on rational values and these Diophantine equations are named after him. Diophantus is sometimes known as the "father of Algebra ". He wrote a total of thirteen books on these equations. Diophantus also wrote a treatise on polygonal numbers In , while reviewing his translated copy of Diophantus' Arithmetica (pub. ca. Pierre de Fermat wrote his famous " Last Theorem " in the page's margins. His copy with his margin-notes survives to this day. Although little is known about his life, some biographical information can be computed from his epitaph (see links below). He lived in Alexandria and he died when he was 84 years old.
