Appuleius Diocles Marriage What It Is Really Like to Be a Chariot Racer
Fashion
... Footwear and Beards/Hairstyles Appuleius Diocles Chariot races were very popular in Ancient Roman times as a form of entertainment. The chariot races would take place at circuses and the most famous circus was Circus Maximus. This was the largest and most extravagant of the Roman chariot racetracks. There were usually twelve racers and they would each be attached to at least two horses for the race. However there was also an event calling for a four horse team. At the circuses, Romans would place wagers on chariot racers and many races offered large payouts to the winning betters. One of the most famous chariot racers of Ancient Rome was a man by the name of Appuleius Diocles. Diocles had become a professional chariot racer at the age of 18 and his career lasted for twenty-four years. As a chariot racer Diocles won a total of 1,462 races before he retired. Diocles won in every event in chariot racing.

Draco. THE severity of the laws of Draco is proverbial; he punished almost all sorts of faults with death; and was hence said by Demades 'to have written his laws, not with ink, but with blood.' To steal an apple was with him a crime of as deep a dye, as to commit sacrilege; even 'confirmed idleness' was punished with death. On Draco himself being once asked, 'Why he punished such petty crimes with death?' he made this severe answer: 'That the smallest of them did deserve that, and that there was not a greater punishment he could find out for greater crimes.' Aristides. The absence of Aristides soon dissipated the apprehensions which his countrymen had so idly imbibed. He was in a short time recalled, and for many years after took a leading part in the affairs of the republic, without showing the least resentment against his enemies, or seeking any other gratification than that of serving his country with fidelity and honour. His disregard for money was strikingly manifested at his death; for though he was frequently treasurer as well as general, he scarcely left sufficient to defray the expenses of his burial. The virtues of Aristides did not pass without reward. He had two daughters, who were educated at the expense of the state, and to whom portions were allotted from the public treasury.

Philip J. van der Eijk. Diocles of Carystus: A Collection of the Fragments with Translation and Commentary. Vol. 1, Text and Translation. Philip J. van der Eijk. Diocles of Carystus: A Collection of the Fragments with Translation and Commentary. Vol. 2, Commentary. This monumental work of more than one thousand pages, devoted to the fourth-century B.C. Volume 1 ( Text and Translation [End Page 172] 176-86); specific foods, drinks, and herbs (frs. 187-238); and miscellaneous (frs. 239-41). There follow four indexes: of the textual sources of the fragments, ordered alphabetically by author; of all Greek, Latin, and Arabic words occurring in the more-verbatim fragments; of the more significant Greek and Latin words occurring in the less-verbatim fragments; and a general index to the fragments. The second volume ( Commentary ) begins with a general discussion of the writers and works from which the fragments are drawn (including any specific peculiarities that may bear upon the form and reliability of the evidence they furnish (pp. viii-xxii)), and of Diocles' works and his significance in the history of medicine (pp. xxii-xxxviii). The commentator then procedes through the fragments one by one: summarizing contents and context, giving background information on specific persons, concepts, and historical relationships, and adding relevant parallels from other ancient sources (pp. 1-426). The volume closes with an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources, a general index to the volume, and an index of all ancient passages cited in the commentary.

    THE EUNUCH
PAMPHILUS Where have you been, Lycinus, and what are you laughing at, I should like to know, as you come? Of course, you are always in a good humour, but this appears to me to be something out of the ordinary, as you cannot restrain your laughter over it. LYCINUS I have been in the Agora, I'd have you know, Pamphilus; and I shall make you share my laughter at once if you let me tell you what sort of case has been tried in my presence, between philosophers wrangling with each other. PAMPHILUS Well, what you have already said is laughable, in all truth, that followers of philosophy should have it out with one another at law, when they ought, even if it should be something of importance, to settle their complaints peaceably among themselves. LYCINUS Indeed, you blessed simpleton! Peaceably! They! Why, they came together at full tilt and flung whole cartloads of abuse upon each other, shouting and straining their lungs enough to split them!

David I, King of Scotland (PC)
Born 1084; died at Carlisle, Scotland, on May 24, 1153. Saint David was the son of King Malcolm III and Queen Saint Margaret of Scotland . He was sent to the Norman court in England in 1093. In 1113, he married Matilda, the widow of the earl of Northampton, thereby becoming earl himself, and added the title earl of Cumbria when his brother Alexander I became king. He waged a long war against King Stephen for the throne of England on behalf of his niece Matilda, but was defeated at Standard in 1138. As King of Scotland from 1124, he was much more successful, ruling with firmness, justice, and charity. David established Norman law in Scotland, set up the office of chancellor, and began the feudal court. He also learned the spirit of Cistercian monks from Ailred of Rievaulx , who for a time was David's steward. Scottish monasticism began to flower from the start of David's reign and countless almshouses, leper-hospitals, and infirmaries were established.
