Note: Many period works were copies or reprints of earlier works given different titles. Some were entirely reworked versions of other treatises. Several other libraries in Europe are said to possess dozens of Italian, German, and even English works on both Medieval & Renaissance fencing and fighting arts. There may be many more Spanish works on fence, or "Verdadera destreza" (the true dexterity) that are still un-cataloged and untranslated or at least very rare to locate (including several by the master Carranza). One source is the rare "Bibliografia de la Esgrima Espanola" catalog by Leguina y Vida from circa 1902. Previously unexamined collections that have recently become available and should soon open up will inevitably bring to light even more source manuals. Historical Works of Interest:

Book: Chapter:
Infinity, and the sun in the centre
The Universe as portrayed by Thomas Digges. Adapted from Leonard Digges A Prognostication Everlastinge The first modern* accuracy* It was a great leap of imagination to think of the Earth spinning around something else, not in the centre of the spheres. Not surprisingly, religious leaders of the time were suspicious of the hypothesis, since it could be seen as irreligious to challenge the accepted view of the universe, since to do so was to challenge divine order; Copernicus' book, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (published in the year of his death, 1543), was for a time forbidden reading (though it was dedicated to Pope Paul III, and though the mariners' charts derived from it continued to be used). Martin Luther was also opposed to the views of Copernicus. Marlowe probably knew of the Copernican system, and Donne wrote of it , but there is no clear evidence* , internal or external to the plays, to tell us whether Shakespeare had heard of it.
The illustration
The original version of this diagram was published by Thomas Digges, an Englishman, in 1576. (Here the writing originally within the spheres is typed outside for reasons of clarity.) Digges went further than Copernicus in one important way: he suggested that there was no outer sphere for the fixed stars, but rather that the universe was infinite. The text of the outer sphere typically mixes scientific originality with religious fervour (here modern spelling is used):

DIGGES, Sir Dudley, English politician, born in 1583; died in 1639. He was the son of Sir Thomas Digges, the celebrated geometer, was ambassador to Russia in 1618, and in 1621 was elected to parliament, where he was active in the impeachment of the Duke of Buckingham. He was at one time imprisoned in the Fleet by Charles I, whom he had offended, but was released on apologizing to the king, and in 1630 was appointed master of the rolls. He was a friend of Henry Hudson, and in 1610 was one of those who fitted out that explorer for his last voyage.

Here I note that at least one answer already exists. In their letter, Altschuler and Jansen reach two main conclusions: 1. Watson knew that the Milky Way comprised stars long before the telescopy of Galileo; 2. That Watson may have learned this from Thomas Digges who may have observed with the perspective glass designed by his father Leonard. The second point, however, is worthy of further discussion. It pertains in part to A Perfit Description Shakespeare, however, removes the uncertainty. Relevant publications posted at www.shakespearedigges.org posit that the Bard described several astronomical facts. Lunar craters and phases of Venus are described in Hamlet The Oxfordian In The New Cambridge Shakespeare BAAS For reasons related to the cosmic allegorical theme of Hamlet A Groat's Worth of Wit A Perfit Description , or else learned of Digges's results beforehand and chose to write specifically about the Milky Way.

I n a list prepared by Sir William Berkely, and preserved among the Hareleian MSS, in the British Museum, commerating the persons who were executed by him in the seventeenth century for participating in Bacon's Rebellion, occurs the name of one Thomas Hansford, who is described by Sir William as "a valiant, stout man," and "a most resolved rebel." The few other references to Hansford in the current accounts of the times are in harmony with this description, and justify a natural desire to be still further acquainted with him. Thus we are told that he commanded at Jamestown, under a commission as Major from Nathaniel Bacon Jr., and was there when Berkeley returned from his exile to the Eastern Shore at the head of six hundred, or, as another account has it, one thousand followers. It is said that he took a conspicuous part in the insurrection, brilliant as it was brief, and when he was captured after Bacon's death, he supplicated no other favor than that "he might be shot like a soldier, and not hanged like a dog." We are also told that during the short respite allowed him after his sentence, "he professed repentance and contrition for all the sins of his past life, but refused to acknowledge what was charged against him as rebellion to be one of those sins, desiring the people present to take notice that he died a loyal subject and lover of his country, and that he had never taken up arms but for the destruction of the Indians, who had murdered so many Christians."

On the 14th inst. at Green Hill, the Seat of Wm. Dudley Digges, Esq. in Prince George's county, Md. Major PIERRE CHARLES L'ENFANT. Of the age of this interesting but eccentric gentleman, we have no accurate knowledge; but it could not have fallen short of seventy years. We should be glad to have possessed materials for a complete biography of the deceased. In the absence of these, we can state, from general knowledge of him, that he was a native of France, of good family. During our Revolutionary war, he was an officer of engineers, and in that capacity was severly wounded at the attack upon Savannah, and was the last of the wounded taken out of the ditch. After the present government was organized, he was employed as an Engineer in making the plan of this City, of which he is the author, and with which his name ought to be gratefully associated. He thought himself ill renumerated for this service, and, because full justice was not, as he thought, measured to him, he refused to receive what was tendered, and lived a life of sequestration from society, and austere privation, which attracted respect, whilst it excited compassion.

    Mary Digges Lee
    Mary Digges
was born in Maryland in 1745, on her family's estate known as, "Mellwood Park," which is now located in Prince Georges county. The family estate was quite beautiful and received such distinquished guests as George Washington. The future President would visit Mary's father, Ignatius Digges, for a brief rest from his travels around the colonies. Coming from such a prominent family, it was fitting that Mary would be courted by the son of another prominent family, the Lee's of "Blenheim," also located in Prince Georges county. In October of 1771, Mary Digges and Thomas Sim Lee were married at her home, "Mellwood Park." They resided at "Needwood," which is now Frederick county, with their eight children. The couple was very active in patriotic activities during the Revolutionary War. They were also very committed to their religious and community ties. They founded the St Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Petersville, Maryland. In 1779, Thomas Sim Lee was selected to become the second Governor of Maryland, succeeding Thomas Johnson. He held the position of state executive until 1782 and then was selected to serve again in 1792. In 1794, he completed his second tenure as Governor. The Revolutionary War was an extremely difficult time for everyone, and especially challenging for the Lee's. Supplies were low, morale was poor and officers of the Maryland Line reported deplorable conditions suffered by the Continental troops. With supply shortages the most immediate threat, General George Washington appealed to his friend, Governor Lee for assistance, stating "unless some extraordinary and immediate exertions are made by the States from which we draw supplies, there is every appearance that the army will infallibly disband by fortnight" Governor Lee appealed to Mary for support. She hastily stepped forward into the public arena, a place women were forbidden to venture.

DIGGES, LEONARD ( - 1571). A Geometrical Practical Treatize Named Pantometria . London: 1571. The author, with his son Thomas, was particularly interested in the practical applications of geometry. In the preface of this book Thomas Digges tells that his father had constructed an instrument by which he "not onely discouered things farre off, read letters, numbered peeces of money with the verye coyne and superscription thereof…but also seuen Myles off declared what hath beene doone at that instant in priuate places." If true, this would appear to be evidence of his having anticipated Galileo's telescope by nearly forty years.
