Using Lycos Spy vs. spy vs. spy The story of Stalin's spies in America: both worse and better than was feared Author: By Lynnley Browning, Globe Staff Date: SUNDAY, February 14, 1999 Page: Section: Books The Haunted Wood Soviet Espionage in America The Stalin Era By Allen Weinstein and Alexander Vassiliev. Random House. 402 pp. Illustrated. $30. Many of the dozens of Americans who passed secrets to the Soviet Union before World War II apparently did so for ideological and philosophical reasons, not monetary ones. Often drawn from the ranks of privileged intellectuals, American informants in the 1930s and '40s trafficked in heady infatuation with Moscow's communist experiment. Samuel Dickstein was an exception. A New York Democrat in Congress who worked early on to root out Nazi sympathizers, Dickstein ran a lucrative trade in illegal visas for Soviet operatives before brashly offering to spy for the NKVD, the KGB's precursor, in return for cash. To wheeler-dealer Dickstein, to whom the Soviets assigned the code name ``Crook,'' green, not red, was the motivating factor. Dickstein's tale, new in the literature on Americans who spied for the Soviet Union, is among the shortest and most startling in ``The Haunted Wood,'' a new investigation by American historian Allen Weinstein and Russian spy-turned-journalist Alexander Vassiliev. Over 1993-'95, the authors had unparalleled access to selected, never-before-seen KGB files. Based on that research, they have compiled a selective account of what they term ``the golden age'' of Soviet espionage in the United States, casting new light upon Moscow's intelligence machine from 1933 to 1945.

The Myth of the Tolerant Left
October 31, 2002 A stubborn myth holds
Why the Left Hates America (just published by Forum/Prima).
The American Left has always fought for tolerance, free speech, and civil liberties only for itself. This fact is most strikingly illustrated by the career of William Z. Foster. Foster served as head of the Communist Party of the United States of America at the same time he sat on the national board of the American Civil Liberties Union. It takes no great sagacity to see that he defended the Bill of Rights only insofar as this served the purposes of Joseph Stalin. Eventually, when the Soviet Union formed an alliance with Nazi Germany to invade Poland, Foster and other Communists were forced to resign from the board.
As for Joe McCarthy, the infamous Wisconsin senator came late to the anti-Communist struggle, and his aim was limited: to get Soviet agents out of the U.S. Government. Quite a few of them had found perches there, and in fact McCarthy underestimated their number. He did make some sloppy charges, but much of the blame for the panic he created on the Left was due to liberals themselves. By encouraging an alliance with the Soviet Union, they had helped the Reds blur the border between liberalism and Communism.
Today the Reds are gone, but the pinkoes we have always with us.

About the author *
The author reviews briefly the career and influence of Whittaker Chambers, an American writer and editor who renounced communism more than fifty years ago and warned about subversives in the U. S. Government. His last published work (1964) presciently foretold that a revolt in Eastern Europe would bring down world communism. April 1, 2001, marked one hundred years since the birth of Jay Vivian "Whittaker" Chambers, one of the most interesting Americans of the twentieth century. Chambers was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but spent most of his early youth in Brooklyn and Long Island, New York. He attended Union Avenue Grammar School and South Side High School, where he excelled at English and languages. After graduating high school in 1919, Chambers worked as a bank clerk and a laborer until enrolling in college at Columbia University in 1921. At Columbia, Chambers participated in the school’s literary activities, which included writing for the undergraduate magazine Varsity, and editing The Morningside Whittaker Chambers: A Biography , Chambers "had found a new intellectual passion, bolshevism."
