Rene Descartes French mathematician and philosopher. He is known as the founder of analytic geometry, and he contributed to the formation of modern physics; in French speaking world where his influence was strong, there were strong oppositions to the Newtonian idea of gravity (as an action-at-a-distance), since Descartes insisted on action-by-contact. But he is by far the more important as a philosopher. His method of analysis and synthesis, epistemology on the basis of clear and distinct ideas, mind-body dualism etc., were historically influencial and are still lively issues in contemporary philosophy. DESCARTES, Rene (1596-1650) French philosopher, scientist, and mathematician. At a time when the intellectual movements of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance had become moribund, he conceived fresh programs for philosophy and science and elaborated and defended them with great originality and brilliance. Descartes founded modern philosophical rationalism and had a profound and pervasive influence on subsequent philosophers of all schools. He was among the first to construe philosophy as providing a necessary foundation for science and, rejecting the traditional contemplative ideal, to regard science as a means of acquiring mastery over nature for the benefit of mankind. In addition to being an innovator in philosophy, he was one of the creators of mathematical physics, the inventor of analytic geometry, and an important figure in the histories of optics, physiology, and other branches of science. ... Rene Descartes SELECTIONS FROM THE PRINCIPLES OF PHILOSOPHY OF RENE DESCARTES TRANSLATED BY JOHN VEITCH, LL. D., LATE PROFESSOR OF LOGIC AND RHETORIC IN THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW CONTENTS
From the Publisher's Preface.
The present volume contains a reprint of the preface and the first part of the Principles of Philosophy, together with selections from the second, third and fourth parts of that work, corresponding to the extracts in the French edition of Gamier, are also given, as well as an appendix containing part of Descartes' reply to the Second Objections (viz., his formal demonstrations of the existence of Deity). The translation is based on the original Latin edition of the Principles, published in 1644. The work had been translated into French during Descartes' lifetime, and personally revised and corrected by him, the French text is evidently deserving of the same consideration as the Latin originals, and consequently, the additions and variations of the French version have also been giventhe additions being put in square brackets in the text and the variations in the footnotes.

Rene' Descartes biography
The French philosopher Rene Descartes lived from 1596-1650.
The French philosopher Rene Descartes lived from 1596-1650. He was the son of an aristocrat and traveled throughout Europe studying a wide-variety of subjects including math, science, law, medicine, religion, and philosophy. Descartes was greatly influenced by other thinkers of the Age of Enlightenment. Descartes develops a correspondence theory of truth. However, for Descartes, truth is always going to have to remain private. He believes we have direct and immediate contact with our own ideas. Whatever we see we bring back to our minds. If we don not like what that something, then we distort it. Our eyes and other senses distort the truth and can deceive us. Descarte says: I have accepted as possessed of the highest truth and certainty I have learned either from the senses or through the senses. Now these senses I have sometimes found to be deceptive; and it is only prudent never to place complete confidence in that by which we have even once been deceived. (Descartes, Rene, "Meditations," Struhl, Paula Rothenberg, and Struhl Karsten J., editors, Philosophy Now. Random House: 1980, P. 88) Our eyes and other senses distort the truth and can deceive us. We must use both the mind and the senses, we must observe nature and analyze what we see. This is the law of nature Descartes discovers, and his idea, "I think, therefore I am," corresponds to it, therefore it is true. However, in order to discover truth we must be totally neutral. We cannot allow our senses to deceive us in the pursuit of truth.

Chapter 1 Liberal Naturalism Descartes is a good place to start. Rene Descartes was a seventeenth century scientist, mathematician, and philosopher. Today he is remembered best for two monumental accomplishments. The first is codifying the link between algebra and geometry. Anyone with a high school education will be familiar with this accomplishment, as it lives on in the form of the Cartesian Coordinate System that young people study in their high school math classes. That's the system where we graph equations using X and Y coordinates (or more) to see what kind of curves result. Descartes' second great accomplishment is a little less well known. It is he who is often credited with creating the modern form of the question, What is the relationship between the mind and the body ? In philosophical circles this is called Descartes believed in a metaphysics of substance and properties. The term substance expresses a technical concept within metaphysics, and it was popular in Descartes' time. A substance is supposed to be the metaphysical substrate that supports the existence of properties.

Immensely influential French philosopher and mathematician, often referred to as "the father of modern philosophy". He proposed a revised form of atomism and so helped pave the way for the expansion of pluralism to include the planetary systems of other stars. In Descartes' cosmological worldview, not only are atoms the fundamental essence of nature but they form vortices, analogous to the solar system, around every star. For religious reasons, Descartes avoided speculating on whether or not these vortices would give rise to inhabited extrasolar worlds. His reluctance to enter the pluralist debate is evident in a letter he wrote to his compatriot, Pierre Chanut: I do not see at all that the mystery of the Incarnation, and all the other advantages that God has brought man obstruct him from having brought forth an infinity of other very great advantages for an infinity of other creatures. And although I do not infer from this that there would be intelligent creatures in the stars or elsewhere, I also do not see that there would be any reason by which to prove that there were not ... Others who followed him, however, and accepted his vortex theory, such as Pierre

French philosopher and natural scientist. He is often said to be father of modern philosophy. Descartes shifts attention from the question of what is the nature of what we know, to can I know anything at all for sure? The legacy of this is that modern philosophy effectively still deals with problems set by Descartes. In terms of scientific achievements he is the first to provide full world picture to challenge (and replace) Scholasticism . It is a fully mechanistic schema - including biological phenomena. par excellence of dualism , but contemporary scholarship is presently engaged in the task of trying to separate the man and his ideas from the caricature that has been assembled of him in the history of Western philosophy. He was schooled at a Jesuit college called La Fleche , after this he joined the army and travelled around Europe. He had a revelation in 'well heated room' and decided to take up philosophy in a serious manner. Legend tells of his habit to meditate in bed until noon. In 1649, he took up a position with Queen Christina in Stockholm, but died of pneumonia. Le Monde Contributed by: Richard P Whaite Related Topics: Philosophy Search for Descartes, Rene (1596-1650)
