Matematicus Purus, Purus Asinus (aforismo antigo) Muitas vezes ouvi Sebastião e Silva dizer: "nunca se deve perder de vista a grande verdade do aforismo antigo: matematicus purus, purus asinus". E quem lembrava com frequência esta verdade capital era o português mais prestigiado no Mundo por trabalhos originais de Matemática Pura. A insistência com que Sebastião e Silva repetia a citação do aforismo não era obviamente, da sua parte, mera adesão lúdica à eufonia faceta de uma fórmula feliz; era antes a consequência de ver incisivamente expressa nessa fórmula uma componente essencial da sua própria visão da natureza profunda do que seja Matemática, e sobretudo, das reais condições do seu devir. Sabia quão grande é para o "matemático puro", insulado na torre aérea da abstracção, o risco de resvalar na logomaquia psitacista de mero jogo virtual de símbolos, moinho silogístico a moer pomposamente a farinha do Nada. Sabia que, através dos tempos, a Matemática deveu sempre avanços essenciais à interacção do espírito de construção formal com as solicitações advenientes dos esforços para sistematizar em esquemas coerentes o conhecimento do Mundo físico. Sabia que só a reflexão filosófica possibilita, ao nível dos fundamentos, a tomada de consciência do que seja alicerce do edifício da Matemática.

HISTÓRICO DA FUNDAÇO DO INSTITUTO DE FÍSICA E MATEMÁTICA DA UNIVERSIDADE DO RECIFE (Rua do Progresso. Ano de 1962) A fundação do INSTITUTO DE FÍSICA E MATEMÁTICA - IFM foi promovida pelo Prof. Luiz Freire , em 1951, perante o CONSELHO NACIONAL DE PESQUISAS, que a adotou, obtendo em seguida do CONSELHO UNIVERSITÁRIO da UNIVERSIDADE DO RECIFE, a respectiva chancela. Assim, o IFM foi fundado em 1953, através de ato do então Reitor Professor Joaquim Inácio de Almeida Amazonas. Inicialmente este órgão congregou além do Professor Luiz Freire, os Professores Manuel Augusto Zaluar Nunes, Alfredo Pereira Gomes, Newton da Silva Maia, Jônio Pereira de Lemos e Manfredo Perdigão do Carmo. Posteriormente, a Divisão de Matemática do Instituto foi acrescida pelos Professores Estrangeiros Ruy Luiz Gomes e José Cardoso Morgado Jr., além dos seguintes Professores da Universidade: Roberto Ramalho de Azevedo, Theophilo Benedicto de Vasconcellos, Rivaldo Alves Correia, Reginaldo Lourenço da Silva, Fernando Antonio Figueiredo Cardoso da Silva, Wolmer Verçosa de Vasconcelos e Deise Ferreira Vanderlei. O Instituto era então composto de duas Divisões: uma de Física e outra de Matemática. As atividades do INSTITUTO DE FÍSICA E MATEMÁTICA tiveram lugar a partir de setembro de 1954, com um curso ministrado em 9 lições (duplas) pelo notável matemático francês Arnaud Denjoy, da Sorbonne, sobre "Teoria das funções de variável real".
