The University Press, Cambridge, England, 1962.
Selections from Early Greek Philosophy by Milton C. Nahm Introduction
Democritus was born at Abdera, Thrace, sometime around 458 BCE. He was described as well traveled, probably visiting Babylon, Egypt, and Ethiopia, and perhaps India. He appears to have spent all of his time on scientific and philosophical studies, teaching, and writing— some 60 works have been listed. Of his voluminous writings, only a few fragments of his ethical theory remain. But these fragments and the descriptions by other writers of his atomic theory put him among the foremost thinkers of his time.
Aristoxenus wrote that Plato wanted to burn all the works of Democritus, but could not do so because the books were already in wide circulation. Failing this, he avoided any mention of Democritus in his own writings. Certainly, Socrates’ brand of argument might not have fared well against Democritus, who was described by Timon as "the guardian of discourse, a keen witted disputant".
Democritus’s theory of the atomic nature of the physical world, developed from that of Leucippus, is known only through the works of critics of the theory such as Aristotle and Theophrastus. It resolved the question of how a world evidently in a state of flux could nevertheless have an underlying nature that was eternal and unchanging. By positing infinitely small things that remained the same but formed different combinations with each other, Leucippus initially, and Democritus in greater detail, managed to answer the question in a way that has been subject to increasingly successful elaboration ever since. One can trace the physical theory of atoms through Epicurus, Lucretius, and Galileo to modern times.

The Atomists: Leucippus of Miletus and Democritus of Abdera
by Marc Wohnsigl April 14, 1994
Introduction Leucippus, born ca. 500 BCE, and his pupil, Democritus, born ca. 460 BCE, are credited with postulating the theory of Atoms and Void. Democritus expanded upon Leucippus' original theory and theorized on many of its detailed applications like perception. Leucippus is credited with writing only a few works, including The Great World System , in which he postulates his theory on atoms and void. Democritus was a much more prolific writer and is credited with writing fifty-two works, although some were quite short. These included his expansion on Leucippus' work in The

Democritus of Abdera
Born: about 460 BC in Abdera, Thrace, Greece
Died: about 370 BC
Democritus of Abdera is best known for his atomic theory but he was also an excellent geometer. Very little is known of his life but we know that Leucippus was his teacher. Democritus certainly visited Athens when he was a young man, principally to visit Anaxagoras, but Democritus complained how little he was known there. He said, according to Diogenes Laertius writing in the second century AD [5]:- I came to Athens and no one knew me. Democritus was disappointed by his trip to Athens because Anaxagoras, then an old man, had refused to see him. As Brumbaugh points out in [3]:- How different he would find the trip today, where the main approach to the city from the northeast runs past the impressive "Democritus Nuclear Research Laboratory". Certainly Democritus made many journeys other than the one to Athens. Russell in [9] writes:- He travelled widely in southern and eastern lands in search of knowledge, he perhaps spent a considerable time in Egypt, and he certainly visited Persia. He then returned to Abdera, where he remained. Democritus himself wrote (but some historians dispute that the quote is authentic) (see [5]):- Of all my contemporaries I have covered the most ground in my travels, making the most exhaustive inquiries the while; I have seen the most climates and countries and listened to the greatest number of learned men.

Augustine of Hippo Cleisthenes
Athenian statesman, from the famous family of Alcmaeonids. Late in the tyranny of Hippias Cleisthenes was banished from Athens. He was said to have bribed the priestess at Delphi into guaranteeing that the oracle would advise all Spartans to overthrow the tyranny in Athens. (See Pisistratus .) Delphi, in return, got Cleisthenes' promise to help bankroll the renovation of the temple. The priestess took the bribe, the Spartans took the advice, Hippias was overthrown and Cleisthenes returned to Athens (511/10 B.C.E. to head one of two aristocratic factions. When the rival faction, headed by Isagoras, got the upperhand, the ever resourceful Cleisthenes appealed to the people and succeeded in passing a sweeping set of democratic reforms that included redefinition of the tribes of Athens (a sort of ancient gerrymandering), granting of sweeping powers to the Council of 500 ( BOULE ,) empowering of the Assembly of all citizens ( EKKLESIA ,) and instituting ostracism , the curious Athenian law by which the citizens could vote to excile for ten years, with or without cause, one of their fellow citizens.

home index ancient Greece portrait gallery Greek scientists Authors Historians Philosophers Politicians Scientists We know almost nothing about Thales of Miletus . Later generations told many anecdotes about this wise man, but it is difficult to verify the reliability of these stories. What seems certain is that he predicted the solar eclipse of 28 May 585, which was remembered because the Lydian king Alyattes and the Median leader Cyaxares were fighting a battle on that day. Another reliable bit of information is that he did some geometrical research, which enabled him to measure the pyramids. However, his most important contribution to physics and philosophy is his attempt to give non-religious, rational explanations for physical phenomena. Behind the phenomena was not a catalogue of deities, but one single, original principle. Although his hypothesis that this principle was water is rather unfortunate, his idea to look for deeper causes was the true beginning of philosophy and science. One of the solutions to the problem postulated by Parmenides of Elea , was the hypothesis of Democritus of Abdera that matter was made up from atoms. There was no real evidence for this idea (which was not completely new), but is explained why change was possible. The atoms were always moving and clustering in various, temporary combinations. Therefore, things seemed to change, but 'not being' never changed into 'being'. (It was assumed that 'not being' was a vacuum, which means that it is in fact not a 'not being' because a vacuum exists in at least four dimensions.) The consequence of this idea is that we are allowed to use our senses, although Democritus warns us to be careful.
