Drinkers = thinkers!
The South African WineNews mentions a study recently published in The American Journal of Epidemiology that reports a high correlation between alcohol consumption and cognitive skills. In most of the tests, the results improved the more the subjects drank in a week. Overall, the heaviest drinkers men who drank more than 241 grams of alcohol per week typically performed 10 percent to 30 percent better than other drinkers. . . . Additionally, the authors cautioned that their findings should not be used to encourage alcohol consumption.
Maybe the old joke is true!

Updated 207 days 6 hours 38 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Boris Delaunay Boris Nikolaevich Delaunay March 15 in Petersburg July 17 in Moscow ) (or Delone Russian language ), was a Soviet Russian mathematician . He worked in the fields of modern algebra , the geometry of numbers , and mathematical crystallography . The Delaunay triangulation is named in his honor. (The spelling Delone is a straightforward transliteration from the Cyrillic alphabet Delaunay is a French -style transcription of his name that he himself preferred because his French ancestors spelled their name that way.)

On real numbers generated by finite automata
The b -adic expansion of any rational number is eventually periodic, but how regular or random (depending on the viewpoint) is the b -adic expansion of an irrational algebraic number? It seems that this natural question has been first addressed by Borel in 1950, who made the conjecture that such an expansion should satisfy some of the laws shared by almost all real numbers. Algebraic irrationals are thus expected to be "rather complex" in a probabilistic framework. In 1965, Hartmanis and Stearns proposed an alternative approach of the notion of complexity of real numbers, by emphasizing the quantitative aspect of the notion of calculability introduced by Turing. According to them, a real number is said to be computable in time T n ) if there exists a multitape Turing machine which gives the first n -th terms of its binary expansion in (at most) T n ) operations. The "simplest" real numbers in that sense, that is, for which one can choose T n O n ), are said to computable in real time. The problem of Hartmanis and Stearns, to which a negative answer is expected, is the following: do there exist irrational algebraic numbers which are computable in real time?

Ascent of Belukha mountain. August 1999. There are some rare places on earth where everyone feels himself at ease, places fabled beauty of which makes the heart stop beating. One of places is the Altai. Buddhists believe that it is the naval of the Earth, while Christian Old-Believers that it is Belovodye (White water). Rich in woods and rivers, honey, medicinal herb and ores, the extremely beautiful Altai is one of wonders of our planet.
From Mongolian "Altai" is Golden mountains. For many people the Altai is a mysterious, unknown and splendid land. Situated on the junction of Russia, China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan borders, it for the most part has preserved pure and difficult of access.
The Altai with its sacred two-headed Belukha Mt, the highest mountain in the whole of the Altai and Siberia, is not so popular with mountaineers as the Himalayas or the Pamirs . The advantage of Belukha Mt is that here you can make climbing tours ranged from the simplest to the most difficult. So you can enjoy the most exciting route to Belukha Mt from the southern side which was formerly close to foreigners.

Wavevector-Dependent Susceptibility in Quasiperiodic Ising Model I
    Jacques H.H. Perk
    Oklahoma State University
The wavevector-dependent susceptibility is the Fourier transform of the pair-correlation function revealing information on the structure of the model. The pair correlations in a planar Ising model can be calculated using quadratic recursion formulae. Aperiodicity can be introduced using Baxter's "Z-Invariance." We shall also introduce Ising models with aperiodic couplings based on de Bruijn's extension of the Fibonacci sequence. We shall prove an extension of a theorem of Tracy on the probability distribution implied and show some of our results.
Wavevector-Dependent Susceptibility in Quasiperiodic Ising Model II
    Helen Au-Yang
    Oklahoma State University
An Ising model on a Penrose tiling based on a pentagrid is introduced. The Ising spins are on every other vertex of the Penrose tiling and the grid lines of the pentagrid are where the Yang-Baxter spectral parameters (rapidities) live. The pair correlation can be calculated by the techniques discussed in the previous talk. The joint probability for averaging over the two local environments of spins is reduced to linear programming. Finally results are shown for the wavevector-dependent susceptibility.

    COMPUTING CONSTRAINED DELAUNAY TRIANGULATIONS
    IN THE PLANE
By Samuel Peterson , University of Minnesota Undergraduate
    The Goal:
Implement an algorithm for finding the constrained Delaunay triangulation of a given point set in two dimensions.
    The Problem:
There are several ways by which to triangulate any given set of points:
There are three possible triangulations of this set of points.
Sometimes we need a triangulation of the points with certain "nice" properties. One of the most common and useful such triangulations is the Delaunay triangulation. Named for the Russian mathematician, Boris Delaunay (originally spelled Delone, and then changed to the French spelling Delaunay), the Delaunay triangulation of a given set of points is defined by the following property:
AB is an edge of the Delaunay triangulation iff there is a circle passing through A and B so that all other points in the point set, C, where C is not equal to A or B, lie outside the circle.
Equivalently, all triangles in the Delaunay triangulation for a set of points will have empty circumscribed circles. That is, no points lie in the interior of any triangle's circumcircle.
