The Lincean Academy was quite possibly the first scientific academy of the modern era. Though the group's members never numbered more than a few dozen, they produced important works in botany, zoology, geology, and astronomy. Linceans used the microscope to make beautifully detailed illustrations of fungi roughly 40 years before Robert Hooke's famous Micrographia . Linceans reproduced 16th-century illustrations of New World flora and fauna for European scholars. While a number of Lincean works were published during the 17th century, however, many more of their supporting notes and illustrations were eventually scattered among private collections throughout Europe, many of them winding up in the Royal Collection at Windsor. Fortunately, much of the group's work was preserved in a "paper museum" assembled by academy member Cassiano Dal Pozzo, and purchased by King George III in 1762. The Linceans enjoyed an early boost, both in morale and prestige, through the admission of Giambattista Della Porta. Considered the greatest naturalist of his age, Della Porta was also an accomplished playwright, and his erudite comedies dominated the Italian stage for years. Yet Della Porta was a product of old, rather than new, science. He retained the Renaissance reverence for the works of classical authorities. He also supported the ideas of antipathies and sympathies, and the doctrine of signatures (the belief, for example, than an herb resembling a scorpion is the perfect remedy for a scorpion sting). By the time of Della Porta's death in 1615, Cesi had lost much of his admiration for the elderly savant. By then Della Porta had been eclipsed by a newer academy member.

The della porta is amongst the oldest recorded Western kites. In his MagiaeNaturalis of 1589, giambattista della porta describes a flying sayle ,
    http://www.kites.org/zoo/single/flat/flat.html
    Flat Kites
The simplest possible form of kite just consists of a single sheet of some suitable material, with spars and a bridle to support it. Unfortunately, flat kites are inherently unstable. They can be stabilised by ensuring that most of the drag is generated behind and below the towing point. Several methods may be used singly or in combination:
    • Adding a tail
    • Adding holes or vents towards the rear of the sail
    • Adding a keel
    • Simply arranging for a forward towing point.
Tails and vents waste wind energy and so tend to result in a low angle of flight. Vents are rarely used in flat kites. Flat kites generally fly well in light to moderate winds.
    Classic Diamond
The classic diamond kite is probably the best known of all kites, and is a flat kite which needs a tail to fly properly. Many of us have owned one of these in our youth. Sometimes they have a keel which adds a bit of stability and eliminates the need for a bridle. A plan for a classic diamond is given by Pelham
    Kite Arch
If you have the patience to make loads of diamond kites (or get your friends or class-mates to help you), you can attach them all to a single line, equally spaced, and tie the line down at both ends. You then have a spectacular kite arch. Here's a picture (34.5k) which gives you a good idea. A kite train is similar, but with only one end anchored. The

    The First Fixed Photographic Images
The dream of photography may be as old as the human eye, which, in processing colors and shapes for the brain, essentially does what a camera does. The first evidence of any kind of mechanical visual reproduction, however, comes from Saudi Arabia, where unknown caravan riders noticed, at a time now lost, that a hole in their tent projected the inverted image of a passing camel onto the opposite wall. In 989 A.D. the Arabian scholar Hassan ibn Hassan described this accidental invention and gave it a name: the camera obscura. The principle of the camera obscura had arrived in Europe by 1267, when the English philosopher-scientist Roger Bacon published his "Perspectiva" and "De Multiplicatione Specierum."
The Italian architect Giambattista della Porta is credited by some with inventing the first camera, although this is largely a matter of defining the word. As far is known, he built the first working camera obscura, which he used beginning in 1569 to project the images of unsuspecting guests into a special room for the delight of a few select spectators the first spy camera. Della Porta was also the first to suggest that artists could use a camera obscura to trace images onto a surface, and to use a concave mirror placed at a 45-degree angle, which rendered his subjects in their proper perspective.
Others followed fast on the heels of della Porta, including Robert Hooke of England, who designed a portable camera obscura that ended up in the hands of mathematician Johannes Kepler in 1600. By the 18th century, many painters were using the camera obscura, or variations on it, to capture the subtle nuances of the human form, especially that most challenging of human expressions: the smile.
