Born in Lusigny-sur-Barse, France, Delaunay studied under Jean Baptiste Biot at the Sorbonne. He worked on the mechanics of the Moon as a special case of the three-body problem. His infinite series expression for finding the position of the Moon converged too slowly to be of practical use but was a catalyst in the development of functional analysis.
He won the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1870.
Delaunay became director of the Paris Observatory in 1870 but was drowned in a boating accident near Cherbourg, France two years later.

Charles Joguet
One of the leading Chinon estates, Charles Joguet came to winemaking when he returned from Paris to tend the family vines following the death of his father. With his determination and drive, however, Joguet soon started making waves. Joguet knew that great wine begins in the vineyard. Joguet pays attention to terroir, and was one of the first Chinon producers to produce cuvées based on the vineyard of origin rather than blending. He lowered yields, hand harvested, and collected the grapes in small 20kg crates rather than allowing them to be damaged in larger containers. In the winery, Joguet was one of the first in Chinon to bottle rather than sell in bulk, to bottle by terroir or by the age of the vines, and to use barrique barrels for ageing. Although the estate still bears the name of Charles Joguet, since the mid 1980s it has largely been run by Alain Delaunay and cellar-master Michel Pinard. Joguet and Pinard first met in 1983 and Pinard quickly became involved in the running of the estate. Delaunay joined Pinard and Joguet in 1986 and looks after the commercial side of the business. Some critics feel that this change has not been of any benefit but the wines remain candidates for the best in the appellation. The Joguet portfolio is led by the following two wines:
  • first is Clos de la Dioterie , from a 2.2 ha north-facing vineyard of chalk and clay adjacent to the winery and populated by eighty year old vines. Yields are low (35 hl/ha). Fermentation is not temperature controlled in order to increase extraction of colour and tannins, the cap is frequently punched down, malolactic occurs on the solids and the wine spends up to a year in old barrels.

To begin with, it grew out of a combination of European and African influences, harmony and rhythm respectively. Appropriate instruments (brass saxhorns as well as saxophones) were invented in the 19th century by the Belgian Adolphe Sax. About half of the roots can be considered European. It was brewed in America by African Americans, and it matured in mixed blood there. Eventually, it came full circle and bounced back to Europe full of vim and vigor. So where are we and what next? The following is a chapter from "The Oxford Companion To Jazz" published by Oxford University Press and edited by Bill Kirchner. Americans taught the Europeans how to play it. Once they learned, they distilled and added to it until they felt that they no longer needed Americans hanging around taking their gigs. From the reverse angle, Americans no longer particularly wanted to hang around Europe either. As Europe grew richer it became more expensive; there were more taxes and they were harder to avoid. And the home playing field began to level out for African Americans.
