Charles Delaunay studied under Biot He published, in 1860 and 1867, two volumes on lunar theory which were the result of 20 years work. This is an important case of the three body problem . Delaunay found the longitude, latitude and parallax of the Moon as infinite series. These gave results correct to 1 second of arc but were not too practical as the series converged slowly. However this work was important in the beginnings of functional analysis Delaunay succeeded Le Verrier as director of the Paris Observatory in 1870 but 2 years later he and three companions drowned in a boating accident. Works from the Centre Pompidou in the Hamburg Kunsthalle
10 September - 21 November 1999 Many major museum collections have been shown in the Hamburg Kunsthalle: 1994 Masterpieces from the collection of the Guggenheim Museum, New York
1996 "Turner in Germany" from the Tate Gallery, London
1998 Paintings of the Russian avant-garde from the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg. We are now delighted to present works by Robert and Sonia Delaunay from the Centre Pompidou in Paris. A representative selection of works by both artists illustrates their transition from objectivity to abstraction (1912/13) and their later ventures into applied artistic spheres, whereby the creative interplay between Robert and Sonia Delaunay, probably the most famous artistic couple of the 20th century, plays a central role. The some 70 works which make up the exhibition belong to those donated by Sonia Delaunay and her son Charles to the Centre Pompidou, who have agreed to let the works tour to only one venue - the Hamburg Kunsthalle. Additional works from private collections round off the exhibition. An extensive exhibition catalogue, which includes a number of essays and selected writings, is being prepared in close cooperation with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, (DM 39,-).

Django Reinhardt Charles Delaunay (translated by Michael James)
Da Capo Press, 1999 (first published in 1961)
No European jazz musician has so enchanted the world as Django Reinhardt, the gypsy guitarist whose recordings with Stephane Grappelli and the Hot Club of France have meant 'the thirties' to several generations of listeners, influencing musicians as far afield as Larry Coryell, Leon Redbone, Eddy Lang, and Charlie Christian. This is the only full-length study of Django ever published in English, an unforgettable portrait of a wild and independent figure who never learned to read or write (friends forged his autographs), exasperated those people who lived by schedules, gambled away a week's salary in a night, but who played the guitar like no one before or since. The distinguished French critic Charles Delaunay, who knows more about Django than anyone alive, here provides not only the familiar outline of a life - the childhood travel in gypsy caravans, the fire that left Django with a crippled hand, the legendary temper and generosity - but he also collected scores of anecdotes about the sensitivity and musical gifts that were the basis for Django's appearance as a character in Jean Cocteau's Les Enfants Terribles . Who else but Django could charm his way out of a jail sentence by serenading the police with his guitar?
