Correspondance de 35 lettres autographes signées à Charles Nicolas Favart. Compiègne, 1769-1771 et [Paris], 1774, Importante correspondance de Delambre à son ami Charles Nicolas FAVART (1749-1806), auteur dramatique et comédien, fils de Charles Simon Favart, le célèbre auteur d'opéras comiques. Personnelles et intimes, ces lettres de jeunesse ont été écrites à l'époque où le futur astronome, très lié à la famille Favart, avait accepté un poste de précepteur à Compiègne, chez M. Le Féron. Elles expriment les goûts et les études littéraires de Delambre et montrent sa passion pour le théâtre, la musique et la poésie. Certaines lettres font allusion à son intérêt pour les mathématiques et peuvent être considérées comme le point de départ de sa brillante carrière scientifique. 1769. "Mon seul plaisir quand je ne suis pas avec vous, c'est de parler de vous ; c'est de songer à vous... je me répète tout ce que j'ai entendu dire à tes aimables parens. La certitude que vous ne m'avez pas oublié tout à fait, la bonté avec laquelle ta chère maman m'a cédé son exemplaire de La Rosière ; tout cela me pénètre et augmente ainsi s'il se peut mes sentimens pour vous..." (3 novembre). "Sais-tu à quoi s'occupoit ton ami tout le tems qu'il a été sans t'écrire ; à des calculs sur la musique... Mon dessein n'est pas de devenir chanteur mais je voudrois savoir déchiffrer les airs pour moi. Ce désir est trop fort pour qu'il soit tout à fait infructueux" (21 novembre).

The recipient of the letter is unknown. The lower section has been cut off and later taped back together. In the upper left corner the date and name of Charles Darwin have been added in a different handwriting. DARWIN, Charles. Four pages entirely in Darwin's hand on engraved stationary, Down, Beckenham, Kent (below the printed words "Railway Station /Orpington. S.E.R. have a line through them in the same ink). Mar[ch] 26 1879. The letter (20.3 x 25.4 cm) is written in brown ink on a folded sheet. A stamped envelope, addressed in manuscript, is included. The letter is written by Darwin to his cousin Mrs. Wheler. It discusses, among other things, the early death of Darwin's uncle and namesake Charles, his father's eldest brother, who died at the age of twenty. Anna Seward (1742-1809) wrote a biography of Erasmus Darwin, the father of the early demised Charles, and the grandfather of the famous Charles, Memoirs of the Life of Dr. Darwin (London, 1804).

The erudite and cosmopolitan Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Delambre made his way north from Paris, while the cautious and scrupulous Pierre-François-André Méchain made his way south. Each man left the capital in a customized carriage stocked with the most advanced scientific instruments of the day and accompanied a skilled assistant. Their mission was to measure the world, or at least that piece of the meridian arc which ran from Dunkerque through Paris to Barcelona. Their hope was that all the world's peoples would henceforth use the globe as their common standard of measure. Their task was to establish this new measure - "the meter" - as one ten-millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the equator. The meter would be eternal because it had been taken from the earth, which was itself eternal. And the meter would belong equally to all the people of the world, just as the earth belonged equally to them all. In the words of their Revolutionary colleague Condorcet - the founder of mathematical social science and history's great optimist - the metric system was to be "for all people, for all time."

R eeds zeer jong bleek zijn uitzonderlijke gave voor de wiskunde toen hij op dertien jarige leeftijd een studie voltooide over de zes volumes van Bézout 's Cours de mathematique en enige tijd later een prijs won met zijn studie over Bossut's Méchanique en général Z ijn levenslijn zou afhangen van verschillende belangrijke beslissingen en evenementen die hem balanseerden tussen verschillende uitersten. In 1787 besloot hij te studeren voor een religieuze carrière maar zijn affiniteit voor de wiskunde en wiskundige erkenning nam de overhand en nooit zou hij de religieuze gelofte afleggen. In 1793 werd politiek een deel van leven nadat de Franse Revolutie in 1789 ook voor velen anderen hun leven zou tekenen. Hij werd lid van het Revolutionaire Committé waarmee hij het idee van een natie vrij van koningen en priesters wel zag zitten. Niet akkoord echter met het terrorisme dat deze committées in het leven riepen wou hij ontslag nemen wat onmogelijk bleek.Door enkele ongelukkige tussenkomsten in deze committées ten gunste van enkele leden belandde hij in het gevang en vreesde voor zijn leven. Waarschijnlijk is het zo dat door het feit dat Robespierre zelf voor de bijl ging in 1794 hij niet kennis maakte met de guillotine !
