He was a member of the bureau of longitudes from 1795 and professor at the Coll¨ge de France from 1807. With P. F. A. He is noted also for astronomical computations, especially a table of the motions of Uranus, and for discovering four formulas in spherical trigonometry (Delambre's analogies). Delambre is known for his historical works, including Histoire de l'astronomie (6 vol., 1817–27). Bibliography See K. Jean Baptiste Joseph Delambre September 19 in Amiens August 19 in Paris ) was a French mathematician and astronomer Delambre was born in Amiens France . In collaboration with Pierre M©chain , his greatest achievement was the measurement of the length of the meridian between Dunkerque and Barcelona . This portion of the meridian, which also passes through Paris , was to serve as a basis for the calculation of the length of the quarter meridian, connecting the North Pole with the Equator . The expedition lasted from to . Its purpose was to establish a universally accepted foundation for the definition of the metre , which was to be defined as 1 / 10,000,000 of the distance from the North Pole to the equator. Delambre and Smithson - by F. D. Bud Uzes Few people today are aware of the indebtedness of the United States to Jean Baptiste Joseph Delambre, one of the best known geodesist-astronomers of his time. Delambre's Base du system Metrique was published in three volumes (1806-10), which shows that he was still engaged upon it at the time he wrote the letter which forms the basis for this story. A leading English scientist, Sir Joseph Banks, President of the Royal Society, wrote to Delambre in 1809, who at that time was the Permanent Secretary of the Mathematical Sciences from France. Banks advised Delambre that Mr. M. Smithson, one of the members of the Royal Society and a person held in high esteem in the scientific community, was being held as a political prisoner of war by the French military, and urgently requested his release. Upon receipt of Banks' letter, Secretary Delambre wrote a letter to the French Minister of War requesting Smithson's release from prison. The original document is reportedly now in the Columbia University Library. Noted along the upper left corner of the letter are words, added by the Minister of War or his deputy, indicating the request was granted.

Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Delambre Claude Mathieu , who was a student of Delambre, wrote in his article on him in Biographie universelle Delambre's interests moved from the study of Greek and Greek literature to Greek science, and he read much on the topic. Soon his interest in Greek astronomy led him to find out about modern astronomy and in about 1780 he read Lalande 's He began attending Lalande Lalande with his knowledge. When Lalande was looking for a new assistant in 1783 to undertake observations for a new edition of his he turned to Delambre who was his best student. Lalande lent Delambre some equipment and the observational data he collected with it was incorporated into the third edition of Lalande 's which would appear in print in 1792. In 1786 Delambre recorded a transit of Mercury across the Sun. At the time which had been predicted for the transit there was cloud and nothing was visible. Most astronomers gave up, but not Delambre who did not believe that the time predicted for the transit by
