The revealed grace of the mechanism: computing after Babbage
Ray Girvan traces the rise of the machines - both digital and analogue - in an era of mechanical computation The dissident Soviet historian Roy Medvedev said of the course of history, that we can learn as much of our destination from the road by which we arrived (and even from the turnings that we didn't take) as from our present position. In the 1990 'cybernetic Victorian novel' The Difference Engine , William Gibson and Bruce Sterling memorably explored one such untaken turning. Their vision of an alternative 1855 showed a Britain in which Charles Babbage had successfully promoted his Analytical Engine, leading to a computer revolution a century early. But was this so clear-cut as a turning missed? The failure of Babbage's ideas in their time can lead to a mistaken impression of a 70-year hiatus in computing between Babbage's death and the post-1940s rise of electronic computers. In reality, only the general-purpose programmable digital computer went on hold. This article aims to be a sampler of the many styles of digital and analogue machine inhabiting a thriving era of mechanical computation. The last quarter of the 19th century was especially rich in calculating innovations. By this time, four-function manual digital calculators were already well-established as the cumbersome (but commercially successful) Thomas Arithmometers, developed by Charles Xavier Thomas de Colmar from a Leibniz 'stepped-drum' design. In the 1870s, though, Willgodt Odhner and Frank Baldwin independently patented 'pinwheel' calculators. Smaller and more efficient, these came to dominate the scientific calculator market - in part due to Odhner's astute marketing of his patent rights - and continued to do, in largely unchanged form, for nearly a century.

1. Dates Born:
Edinburgh, 1550; Died: Edinburgh, 4 April 1617; Datecode: Lifespan: 67
2. Father: Gentry; Government Position; Sir Archibald Napier was the 7th Laid of Merchiston. Gridgeman calls the family 'marginal aristocracy,' Jourdain is insistent that the family was not aristocratic. Gentry seem the correct category. The family had made its way up over the space of two centuries by service to the King. Sir Archibald, after a number of other offices, eventually became Master of the Mind. It seems clear that the father was wealthy. Napier inherited from him an estate sufficient to live well on.

4. Education: University of St Andrews; St. Salvator's College, St. Andrews, 1563. He was apparent-ly there only for a year and then went to the continent to study. Absolutely no evidence exists as to where he studied, but he returned home by 1571 as a scholar competent in Greek. No known B.A. A degree was not relevant to him.

Cognac - The story so far
Cognac is one of the most desirable and fascinating drinks in the world. It has variously been described as the King of Spirits, La Liqueur des Anges, and the Elixir of the Gods. Praise indeed for this beautiful, amber coloured spirit which originates from the Charentes region of western France and which is the product of a special double-distillation process, of the fruits of the local soil, of the skills of producers large and small and of time elapsed in the barrel where cognac acquires its unique characteristics.
A Bit of history
Although the Charentes area had been known as a wine producing region since Roman times, the distillation of wine in to an eau-de-vie that was christened Brandywijn (literally "burnt wine") by the Dutch traders who installed their stills there dates back to the early 1600's. The development of the cognac industry that we know today came about in the eighteenth century with the arrival of more foreigners, many of Anglo-Saxon origin, who were keen to secure their own supplies of the spirit which was increasingly popular in northern European countries - people such as Jean Martell from Jersey, Richard Hennessy and James Delamain from Ireland and Thomas Hine from England, who were to be the founders of some of the large cognac houses that dominate the region today.

BSHM Abstracts - H Habib, S Irfan and Dhruv Raina, ‘The introduction of scientific rationality into India: a study of Master Ramchundra—Urdu journalist, mathematician and educationalist’, Annals of science
The contradictions shown in Ramchundra’s projects were the products of contradictions in the political and ideological thinking of the period. He gave a critique of prevalent systems, and also a call for social transformation from a stance close to that of Comtean positivists, which can be located within the context of C19 colonial politics. Hackmann, Willem, ‘Mathematical instruments’, in John Fauvel, Raymond Flood and Robin Wilson (eds), Oxford figures: 800 years of the mathematical sciences , Oxford University Press 1999, 62-75
A striking aspect of the development of practical mathematics from C16 to C18 is the importance of the craft base, the ease with which skills in paper engraving were translated into those of instrument making, and the cohesion of the circle of scholars, practitioners and instrument makers. Hadley, John and David Singmaster, ‘Problems to sharpen the young’

Scientists of the Christian Faith: From the Era of Galileo The Galileo Project is a hypertext source of information on the life and work of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) and the science of his time. The project, whose homepage is here: http://es.rice.edu/ES/humsoc/Galileo/ , is supported by the Office of the Vice President of Computing of Rice University. The initial stages were made possible by a grant from the Council on Library Resources to Fondren Library. Contributors to the Project are noted here: http://es.rice.edu/ES/humsoc/Galileo/About/galileo_development.html Albert Van Helden, Lynette Autrey Professor of History at Rice University, is responsible for the written text in the Project (except where otherwise noted). The Project features a Catalog of the Scientific Community of the 16th and 17th Centuries at http://es.rice.edu/ES/humsoc/Galileo/Catalog/catalog.html This is a searchable database of detailed histories of over 600 individuals who made significant contributions to Western science. These histories have been compiled by Richard S. Westfall, Department of History and Philosophy of Science at Indiana University. From this I’ve compiled a list of 522 Galileo-era scientists known to be Christians, with links to biographies from the Galileo Project.
