Max Dehn November 13 June 27 ) was a German mathematician . He studied the foundations of geometry with Hilbert at G¶ttingen in 1899, and obtained a proof of the Jordan curve theorem for polygons . In 1900 he wrote his dissertation on the role of the Legendre angle sum theorem in axiomatic geometry. Also in 1900 he resolved Hilbert's third problem Dehn's interests later turned to topology and combinatorial group theory . In 1907 he wrote with Poul Heegaard the first book on the foundations of combinatorial topology , then known as analysis situs . Also in 1907, he described the construction of a new homology sphere . In 1908 he believed that he had found a proof of the Poincar© conjecture , but Tietze found an error. In 1910 Dehn published a paper on three dimensional topology in which he introduced Dehn surgery and used it to construct homology spheres. He also stated

Christos Dimitrios Papakyriakopoulos Griechische Wissenschaftler (a short version of a biography written by Stavros G. Papastavridis ) CHRISTOS PAPAKYRIAKOPOYLOS was born in ATHENS (-XALANDRI) in 1914. His father, coming from PELOPONESE (TRIPOLIS), was an affluent merchant. He graduated from Varvakeion, ( the most prestigious, at that time and for many decades later, high school in Greece ). He enrolled in the National Metsovion Institute of Technology (Ethniko Metsovion Polytexneio) in 1933. There he met Professor of Mathematics Nikolaos Kritikos, who influenced him to switch and enroll in the Mathematics Department of the University of Athens. His interest was attracted to Algebraic Topology, (subject having minimal activity in Greece at that time), and he read on his own Aleksandrov and Hopf, Topologie, which has appeared in 1935. Scope and Contents
The Max Dehn Papers document the career of Max Dehn (1878-1952) and relate chiefly to his research in geometry, topology, group theory, and the history of mathematics. Most of the papers are from Dehn's years at Frankfurt University and, after his immigration in 1940 to the United States, Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Included are lecture notes by E. Hellinger, correspondence, notebooks, manuscripts of publications, reprints, and lecture and course notes by Dehn. Correspondents include E. Artin, O. Blumenthal, H. Bohr, S. Breuer, C. Caratheodory, M. Kneser, E. Noether, M. Pasch, O. Toeplitz, and E. Zermelo. The majority of the materials are written in German, with some English and French.

David Hilbert.
After World War I Dehn became professor of mathematics at Frankfurt University, but lost his position 1935 because of the Nazi anti-Semitism laws. He emigrated 1940 to the USA, and worked from 1945 at the Black Mountain College in North Carolina.
Dehn found a solution to one of Hilbert's 23 unsolved problems (concerning the existence of tetrahedra with equal bases and heights, but not equal in the sense of division and completeness).
In 1910, Dehn proved an important theorem on topological manifolds. The theorem came to be known as Dehn's lemma, but was later found not to apply in all circumstances. Dehn continued to work on topological problems of transformation and isomorphism.

Max Dehn wrote one of the first systematic expositions of topology (1907) and later formulated important problems on group presentations , namely the word problem and the isomorphism problem. Hilbert 's supervision obtaining his doctorate in 1900 for a thesis entitled From 1921 until 1935 he held the chair of Pure and Applied Mathematics at the University of Frankfurt but he was forced to leave his post by the Nazi regime in 1938. In 1940 he emigrated to the USA, travelling there via Scandinavia, Russia and Japan. Once in the USA he taught at several universities and colleges, for instance at the University of Idaho in Pocatello, the Illinois Institute of Technology and St John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. However he was unable to find a full-time position and Saunders Mac Lane recently wrote:- ... most mathematicians fleeing Europe were helped to some sort of position in the United States ... I recall two cases of failures: Max Dehn, noted for work in topology, got only a weak position.
