John DEE
Born: 13 Jul 1527, London, Middlesex, England Died: Dec 1608, Mortlake, Surrey, England This remarkable mathematician and astrologer is supposed to have been descended from a noble old Welsh House. He affirmed that among his direct ancestors was Roderick the Great, Prince of Wales . His father was a vintner and a man of high repute in the court of Henry VIII , with some affluence, allowing him to give his son a decent education. John Dee went to St. John's College in Cambridge at the age of 15 in 1542, where he studied math and astronomy, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree two years later. After receiving his first degree, he traveled to Holland meeting with many scholars. When he returned to England, he brought with him the first astronomer¹s staff of brass along with two brass gloves constructed by Gerard Mercetor , a famous cartographer of that time. After his return he received a Master of the Arts degree but was soon forced to leave England after being accused of being a conjurer thanks to a machine he built. During his first sojourn away from England, he first went to Louvain, France then spent some time in Paris, giving lectures on Euclid's Elements and the basics of Geometry at the Sorbonne. Dee was offered a permanent post there, but he declined the post to return to England where he had been recommended for the post of Rector of Severn-upon-Severn by

The astrologer was now in a delightful and enviable position, having a comfortable home and assured income and being able to devote himself exclusively to the studies he loved. The most romantic circumstances in Dee's life, however, are those which deal with his experiments in

      Biography
John Dee (1527-1608) was a renown philosopher, mathematician, geographer and navigator during 16th century's Elizabethan Renaissance. He was educated in Cambridge and served as court astrologer to Queen Elizabeth I - even predicting her coronation would be in 1558. Nowadays, Dee is most well known for his conversations with angels. Dee was very well respected during the early parts of his career, often in contact with higher ups in British society and the Catholic Church, and amassing for himself one of England's finest libraries. In 1582, Dee made a failed attempt to introduce the Gregorian Calendar to England, and this was also the year he met Edward Kelley. During 1583-1589, Dee spend much of his time pursuing occult sciences and touring Europe with his wife and Kelley. At times, they even stayed with the King of Poland and the Emperor Rudolf in Prague In 1584, Dee started to find himself in hot water with Giovanni Francesco Bonomi, the bishop of Vercelli, for offering to reveal some of his angelic revelations with Rudolf II, the Holy Roman emperor. At that time, the Church didn't deny that Dee and his scryer, John Kelley's conversations with celestial beings were real - but they did question whether evil spirits were involved. Basically, the Church believed that because Dee had a wife, and therefore was concerned with "worldly" matters, he couldn't possibly be in contact with good angels, for only very holy, celibate hermits received such visits.

The Necronomicon is the rarest and most terrible of the magical grimoires. According to New England horror writer Howard Philip Lovecraft, the Necronomicon was "Composed by Abdul Al-Hazred, a mad poet of Sanaa, in Yemen, who is said to have flourished during the period of the Ommiade caliphs, circa 700 A.D. He visited the ruins of Babylon and the subterranean secrets of Memphis and spent ten years alone in the great southern desert of Arabia - the Roba al Khaliyeh, or "Empty Space" of the ancients and "Dahma" or "Crimson" desert of the modern Arabs, which is held to be inhabited by protective evil spirits and monsters of death. Of this desert many strange and unbelievable marvels are told by those who pretend to have penetrated it. In his last years, Al-Hazred dwelt in Damascus, where the Necronomicon (Al Azif) was written, and of his final death or disappearance (738 A.D.) many terrible and conflicting things are told." (Lovecraft) In his history of the Necronomicon , Lovecraft adds that it was translated into English by Dr. John Dee. This manuscript was never published and survives only in rare and often incomplete copies. The fabulous

    Johannes (John) Dee
    (1527-1608 e.v.)
    by T. Apiryon
English alchemist, mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, philosopher and magician. Dee was the court astrologer to both Queen Mary I and Queen Elizabeth I, and, according to legend, conjured a windstorm which resulted in the defeat of the invading Spanish Armada. Dee was the editor of the first English translation of Euclid's "Elements." Dee, along with Edward Kelly were responsible for the Enochian system of magical intercourse with a hierarchy of angelic beings, a system of great importance in the magical technology of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and of Aleister Crowley, forming the basis of Liber CDXVIII: The Vision and the Voice (in The Equinox, Vol I, No. V, March 1911 e.v.) and Liber LXXXIX vel Chanokh (in The Equinox , Vol. I, Nos. VII and VIII, March and September 1912 e.v.). Some believe Dee to be the true instigator of the Rosicrucian movement. His major published work was Monas Hieroglyphica (1564). The Origins of Dr. John Faustus
DR. JOHN DEE Johann Faust Cornelius Agrippa Dr. John Dee was well known to both Queen Mary and her successor Elizabeth. Indeed, Dee was imprisoned for a time by Mary on account of an unsatisfactory horoscope that he presented her with. Dee was a great scholar and owned a library of over 4,000 books which was astonishing at the time, considering that the Cambridge University library at that time held only 451 volumes and manuscripts. He turned to occultism however, because, like Marlowe's Faustus he was disillusioned by the limited nature of more traditional fields of study. As he himself wrote: 'All my life, I had spent in learning...And I found that neither any man nor any book...was able to teach me those truths I desired, and longed for.' Dee turned to Angels rather than Demons in his search for enlightenment and, through the power of his disreputable partner Edward Kelly, proceeded to communicate with many Angels. Chief among these was Uriel, from whom Dee learned the magical language of Enochian. He died at the age of 81 in 1608, just 4 years after the publication of Christopher Marlowe's first edition of 'Dr. Faustus'.

The assumption that Dee's practices are original with him, or at the very least must harbor early modern principles (as opposed to medieval principles or precedents) sometimes leads her to misread the evidence. So, for example, Harkness writes:
In Dee's time ... Reformation theologians placed a new emphasis on the ways in which prayer could foster an "unmediated relationship between the individual and God." Dee showed himself, in this respect at least, very much a Protestant, for he did not direct his prayers to intercessory agents .... He communicated with God directly, and asked the Deity to send angels, who would then function as intermediaries in the transmission of divine knowledge. (125)
Yet in practice few texts show more consciousness of the hierarchical arrangement of the cosmos than those devoted to conjuring spirits. All use prayer; even necromantic rituals often show a fine sensitivity to the order in which lower spirits must be bound by loftier ones, and it is generally recognized in one way or another that the whole machine moves at the will of God. While is not clear in all cases whether the spirits involved in necromantic experiments are good, bad, or simply neutral, in those experiments and texts explicitly devoted to the invocation of angels, the angels are typically not "bound" or coerced in the way that demons are as Dee clearly knew himself, their presence was requested through humble petition to God.
