John Dee
Astrologer to the Queen
Born on July 13, 1527, in London, England, John Dee was an "English alchemist, astrologer, and mathematician who contributed greatly to the revival of interest in mathematics in England."
Encyclopaedia Britannica "Dee was an exceptional student who entered Cambridge University when he was fifteen...Dee excelled at Cambridge and was named Underreader (junior faculty member) before taking his degree. After graduating he traveled to the Continent to continue his studies, achieving overnight fame in Paris at the age of twenty-three, when he delivered a series of lectures on the recently exhumed works of the Greek mathematician Euclid."
Visions and Prophesies "After lecturing and studying on the European continent between 1547 and 1550, Dee returned to England in 1551 and was granted a pension by the government. Dee became astrologer to the queen, Mary Tudor, and shortly thereafter was imprisoned for being a magician but was released in 1555."
Encyclopaedia Britannica "Dee met the future Queen Elizabeth while she was being held under house arrest by Queen Mary. The two developed a freindship that lasted for the rest of their lives. As queen, Elizabeth gave Dee money...More importantly, she protected him from those who accused him of withcraft."

Dee, John But he [Lewis] spent most of his time with a big black leather volume entitled Necromancy. Necromancy is the branch of magic that deals with the raising of the dead. The frontispiece of the book was an engraving that showed Dr. John Dee, personal astrologer to Queen Elizabeth I of England, as he and his assistant, Michael Kelly, raised the spirit of a dead woman in an English churchyard at midnight. The two men wee standing inside a chalk circle drawn on the ground. The border of the circle was covered with strange symbols and words. Just outside the charmed circle hovered a figure in a long nightgown. On her head she an odd ruffly bonnet, the kind they once buried women in. Lewis kept turning back to the illustration because it frightened him. But he read the rest of the book. [ The House with a Clock in its Walls MWC 7 / DHO 79 / BBS 100

Some say that Dr John Dee's genius led him to become deranged and deluded, others believe he was in league with angels and devils. He caused uproar in 16th-century Europe with his 'angelic conversations' - and he inspired the character of Prospero in William Shakespeare's The Tempest and the main character in Christopher Marlowe's Dr Faustus. But was Dee really 'a conjurer of wicked and damned spirits' or simply the dupe of a clever con man? Early promise When he was still a child, it became clear that John Dee was an exceptional student. At 15, he got a place at St John's College, Cambridge University, and quickly built a reputation as a mathematician, philosopher and astrologer . His skills were so renowned that by his early twenties he began drawing up astrological charts for Mary Tudor, the fiercely Catholic Queen who'd come to the throne in 1553. But Dee lived in a time when superstition and fear of the supernatural was rife and when he made the mistake of presenting Mary with an unfavourable horoscope, she charged him with witchcraft and imprisoned him at Hampton Court. Luckily Mary relented and released him, but this incident began a habit of arrest and release on the Queen's whim. Unsurprisingly, Dee became secretive about his blossoming interest in the occult.

Dee, John
Born: July 13, 1527, London, Eng.
Died: December 1608, Mortlake, Surrey English alchemist, astrologer, and mathematician who contributed greatly to the revival of interest in mathematics in England. After lecturing and studying on the European continent between 1547 and 1550, Dee returned to England in 1551 and was granted a pension by the government. Dee became astrologer to the queen, Mary Tudor, and shortly thereafter was imprisoned for being a magician but was released in 1555. Besides practicing astrology and horoscopy in the court of Elizabeth I, whose favour he enjoyed, he also gave instruction and advice to pilots and navigators who were exploring the New World. He was asked to name a propitious day for Elizabeth's coronation, and he gave her lessons in the mystical interpretation of his writings. In 1570 the first English translation of Euclid's work appeared, and, although it is credited to Sir Henry Billingsley, who became sheriff and later lord mayor of London, Dee probably wrote part or all of it. In addition, he wrote the preface, which encouraged the growing interest in the mathematical arts. Dee later toured Poland and Bohemia (1583-89), giving exhibitions of magic at the courts of various princes. He became warden of Manchester College in 1595.

Edward Kelley

Scrying
The original Wizard Who was John Dee? He is virtually unknown in modern times, although he has had a profound influence on popular culture- without him, there would be no Harry Potter, no Gandalf, no wizard bearing a crystal ball. As a brilliant magician, mathematician, scientist, and secret agent, John Dee was the original Renaissance man. Something of a prodigy, Dee entered St. John's College at Cambridge at age 15. He achieved notoriety early on with a charge of sorcery, which stemmed from a mechanical flying beetle demonstrated in a stage play. After spending many years studying mathematics and cartography, he took an interest in natural magic, a pastime then accepted by the church. From his studies he developed a doctrine that one could obtain knowledge of God from the applied practice of magick- a controversial idea that was to get him into trouble on a number of occasions.

DEE SCRYING METHOD
John Dee (1527 to 1608) was one of the greatest scryers in history. Dee's private library of books was renowned throughout Europe. Through his studies Dee was well versed in the magic of the ancient world. In 1591 he became strongly interested in spirit communication when he started having troublesome dreams and hearing knocking noises. He records these disturbances in his private diary. Dee began by trying to see visions within a small rock crystal. Dee met Edward Kelley in 1582 when he came to his house seeking information about turning base metals into pure gold. Kelley had little interest in the angels other than trying to use them to make money. The angels treated Kelley with contempt and only used him as a line of communication to Dee. Dee had a strong interest in using the angels as political channels, but the angels where not interested. The angels where only interested in passing on the system of Enochian magic. The actual scrying method of Enochian magic was recorded in Dee's diary Libri Mysteriorum. Dee's crystal was a small globe of rock crystal. Sometimes Dee used a mirror of obsidian which he called his jet shewstone.

13th July : John Dee born in London, England, son of Rowland Dee, a minor civil servant, and Johanna Dee (née Phillips). Dee atttends St. John's College, Cambridge University, having already been schooled at London and Chelmsford (Essex). Dee, having already mastered Latin, would have studied grammar, logic and rhetoric; also arithmetic, geometry, astronomy (which in those days included Astrology), and music; as well as the three philosophies - Moral, Natural and Divine. It is also probable that he studied Greek and Hebrew. It has also been suggested (Clulee 1988) , that this was when Dee first became acquainted with Hermeticism, and even (French 1972) Practical Alchemy - though both of these would not have been on the curriculum! Dee gets BA. He is given a fellowship at Trinity College, Cambridge as Under Reader in Greek. Dee is awarded his MA. He goes to Louvain in Belgium to lecture in Mathematics. He fast establishes an international reputation for himself as a leader in the field. Goes to Paris to lecture on Euclid. This is so successful Dee receives offers of patronage from European Monarchs and nobles: however, Dee refuses them all, as he has set his sights on a career in England. Dee's success in Paris also causes hime to be sought out by European scholars. Around this time, Dee's lectures show the influence of
