Willem de Sitter
Highly respected Dutch astronomer
Willem de Sitter (1872-1934), a Dutch astronomer, mathematician and physicist, worked energetically across a wide number of fields, earning the respect of many theorists. De Sitter, who was interested in astronomy from his high school years, traveled to the royal observatory in Cape Town, South Africa, to study for his doctorate, which he received upon his return to the Netherlands in 1901. De Sitter became a professor of astronomy at Leiden University in 1908 and was appointed to head the university's observatory 11 years later.
De Sitter's theory contributed to modern space theories
When Albert Einstein published his special theory of relativity in 1905, few astronomers realized how much the idea would affect their field. In 1911, de Sitter published a simple theory based on the assumption that if Einstein's theory of relativity applied to astronomical bodies, all observations made according to Isaac Newton's theories would be drastically changed.
After Einstein published his general theory of relativity in 1915, de Sitter responded with a series of papers, one of which included what became known as "de Sitter's Space," which stood in contrast to "Einstein's Space," a theory about space written by Einstein.

Willem De Sitter studied mathematics at Groningen and then joined the Groningen astronomical laboratory. He worked at the Cape Observatory in South Africa (1897-99) then, in 1908, de Sitter was appointed to the chair of astronomy at Leiden. From 1919 he was director of the Leiden Observatory. In 1913 de Sitter produced an argument based on observations of double star systems which proved that the velocity of light was independent of the velocity of the source. It put to rest attempts which had been made up until this time to find emission theories of light which depended on the velocity of the source but were not in conflict with experimental evidence. De Sitter corresponded with Ehrenfest in 1916, and he proposed that a four- dimensional space- time would fit in with cosmological models based on general relativity. He published a series of papers (1916-17) on the astronomical consequences of Einstein 's general theory of relativity. He found solutions to

He also observed briefly with David Gill at the Cape of Good Hope, and he later stationed a Leiden astronomer in South Africa. He worked extensively on the motions of the satellites of Jupiter, determining their masses and orbits from decades of observations. He redetermined the fundamental constants of astronomy and determined the variation of the rotation of the earth. He also performed statistical studies of the distribution and motions of stars, but today he is best known for his contributions to cosmology. His 1917 solution to Albert Einstein's field equations showed that a near-empty universe would expand. Later, he and Einstein found an expanding universe solution without space curvature.
