Note that you need the symbol font installed on your browser to read the mathematical equations below correctly Many functions, used to model physical systems in engineering or physics, arise as the solution to a homogeneous differential equation. Let µ(t) be the concentration or intensity of the physical process at time t. It is often the case that there are physical reasons for supposing that µ(t) satisfies a differential equation like S p+1 x k D k-1 µ(t) = for all t k=1 where D is the differential operator and the x k are unknown coefficients. A typical solution to (1) is a sum of exponential functions (2) µ(t) = S p a j exp( b j t) j=1 where the b j are rate constants (usually negative) and the a j are amplitudes. Such a solution is appropriate for a transient system which dies to zero as time goes on, such as the concentration of an intermediary compound in a chemical reaction. Another typical solution to (1) is a sum of sinusoids (3) µ(t) = S p/2 a j sin( b j t + f j j=1 Such a solution is persistent and periodic, and is appropriate for electrical or physical systems driven by persistent regular oscillating forces. Signals in speech recognition are often of this type. A third common solution is the damped sinusoid

The Ecole des Ponts in the XIXth Century The challenge of scientific and technical advance The French Revolution was not without danger to the very existence of the School: the Ecole des Ponts was finally able to continue its work, but only after numerous changes. Entry became open to students from the whole of France, recruitment was by competitive examination, tuition was free, and students received a fixed stipend.
From 1794, the year of the creation of the Ecole Polytechnique, the education of students at Ponts was to undergo change under the influence of a number of scholars, engineers, and political figures who were not happy with the working methods instituted by Jean-Rodolphe Perronet. ENPC was to develop under the strong leadership of de Prony, ENPC Director for 41 years (1798 - 1839), and his successors. Under his leadership, Engineering education, based on a broad scientific curriculum was instituted. It is still in place today.
The first laboratory of the School, the oldest civil engineering laboratory in the world, was created in 1831. The first issue of the "Annals of Ponts et Chaussées" was published the same year.

    Building a Large Prony Brake
    From Issue Vol.57, No.3 (Jan-Feb 2003)
How Much Power Does That Engine Really Produce?
A Working Prony Brake Provides the Answer
Working Out Design Considerations and Initial Details:
Part One of a Two Part Series By Bruce E. Babcock A Short History of the Prony Brake About three years ago, I built a small Prony brake to take to engine shows so people could see how small hit-and-miss gas engines perform working under a load. A Prony brake belted to an engine not only supplies a uniform load on the engine, it also measures the engine's horsepower output, and it demonstrates how horsepower was measured 100 years ago. Running my small Prony brake, I noticed it wasn't just engine owners who were interested in the brake - many spectators stopped to examine the device, ask questions and watch it in operation. At the first show where I exhibited the brake, I recall an elderly gentleman proclaiming, "Now I know what they mean when they say 'brake' horsepower!" My small Prony brake is described in detail in "The Design, Construction and Use of a Small Prony Brake" in the July 2000 issue of Gas Engine Magazine . The concept of rating engines, water wheels and windmills in terms of horsepower dates back to the early 1700s, but it wasn't until the late 1700s that anyone made a real effort to determine just how many foot-pounds per minute a horse was capable of producing. Fittingly, it was James Watt, the father of the modern steam engine, who was the first person to make this determination. Watt was selling steam-pumping engines, and he needed a reliable way to calculate the output of his engines so potential customers would have an idea of their capacity. Watt studied mine ponies lifting coal at a coal mine, and he found that, on average, a mine pony could perform 22,000 foot-pounds of work every minute. Put another way, he found that a horse exerting one "horsepower" could lift 220 pounds of coal 100 feet in one minute.

    Prony Toolbox Help: Prony Analysis
Prony analysis has been shown to be a viable technique to model a linear sum of complex exponentials to signals that are uniformly sampled. The Prony method was developed by Gaspard Riche, Baron de Prony in 1795 in order to explain the expansion of various gases (Marple 1987). In his original paper, Prony proposed fitting a sum of exponentials to equally spaced data points and extended the model to interpolate at intermediate points. The Prony method is not only a signal analysis technique but also a system identification method, which is widely used in the areas of power system electromechanical oscillation, biomedical monitoring, radioactive decay, radar, sonar, geophysical sensing and speech processing. As compared to other oscillatory signal analysis techniques such as those of Fourier, Prony analysis has the advantage of estimating damping coefficients apart from frequency, phase and amplitude. In addition, it best fits a reduced-order model to a high-order system both in time and frequency domains (Marple 1987).

What we call the Darcy-Weisbach equation has had a long history of development. It is named after two of the great hydraulic engineers of the middle 19th century, but others have also played a major role. Julies Weisbach (1806-1871) a native of Saxony, proposed in 1845 the equation we now use, h l = fL/D * V where hl is the head loss, L is the pipe length, D is the pipe diameter, V is the average velocity, g is the acceleration of gravity and f is a friction factor. However, he did not provide adequate data for the variation in f with velocity. Thus, his equation performed poorly compared to the empirical Prony equation (Gaspard Clair Francois Marie Riche de Prony, 1755-1839) in wide use at the time; h l = L/D * (aV + bV where a and b are empirical friction factors for the velocity and velocity squared. h l = L/D * [(c + d/D V + (d + e/D)V where c, d

What's the difference between horsepower and torque?
19-Jul-2005 Dear Straight Dope: There is a question on the table that I would like to be able to answer before my friend can so that I can seem like the smart guy: What is the difference between an engine's horsepower and torque? Apparently, this is a question that neither reference manuals or mechanics can give a satisfactory answer to. If any genius in the world can get this straight, you can. Keith, Chicago Dear Straight Dope: I was looking to buy my first car and had a question come to mind. What is "horsepower"? How is it measured? I'm sure it has something to do with how much a horse could pull, not how many horses could be pulled. But what horse breed do they use, and what's it pulling? Charles Dixon, Charleston, South Carolina
SDSTAFF Una replies: Measures of engine performance such as torque and horsepower are relatively simple, yet are often badly misunderstood by the public. Some of this misunderstanding is due to automobile advertising, some to people having just enough knowledge to be dangerous, and some to the continuing death-spiral of science education in America. I'll begin by explaining power vs. horsepower, then torque and how it is related to power. Finally I'll give examples of why knowing something about these concepts is important when comparing automobile engines. power , in the scientific sense of the term, just as the foot is a unit of measurement for length. Horsepower measures the same thing that the watt doesthe power that a device can create or consume. Just as the wattage of a light bulb tells you how much power it will use, the horsepower specification for an engine tells you how much power the engine can produce.

    Sophie Germain
    Introduction
Sophie Germain grew up with the revolutions. Not only the American and French Revolutions, but with the revolution in herself. She wanted to be seen as a great mathematician. It took a lot of hard work and going against her family, but she never gave up. She is recognized today for her great work, but credit for number theory, acoustics, and elasticity was never given in her lifetime because of one reason. She was a woman. Germain did great contributations to the Number Theory, acoustics and elasticity.
    Biography
Sophie was not really interested in the study of mathematics until the age of 13 when the French Revolution started. She was confined to her home and spent all her time in her father's libraries. There she learned about the death of Archimedes. Legend was that Archimedes was so engrosed in studing mathematics that he didn't respond to a Roman soldier and was killed. This made Sophia interested, if a guy would die for mathematics than there must be much to learn and study. Thus began her road down the study of mathematics. It was the death of Archimedes that made her want to become a mathematician.
