Garrett Augustus Morgan: American Inventor

Garrett Augustus Morgan (March 4, 1877 - August 27, 1963), was an African-American inventor and businessman. He was the first person to patent a traffic signal. He also developed the gas mask (and many other inventions). Morgan was born in Paris, Kentucky , and was the son of former slaves (and the 7th of their 11 children). His formal education ended during elementary school. As a a teenager (in 1895), Morgan moved north to Cincinnati, Ohio , looking for opportunity. His incredible ability to repair machinery led to many job offers from factories. In 1907, he started his own sewing equipment and repair shop. His business expanded in 1909; he employed 32 people, who used equipment that Morgan made (and invented) himself. In 1920, Morgan went into the newspaper business, starting the "Cleveland Call." He was very successful, and eventually bought a car. While he was driving along the streets of Cleveland, he realized how unsafe intersections were, and was determined to make driving safer.

Biography of Garrett Augustus Morgan, a businessman who was inspired to invent an electric light signal. This would help pedestians to cross roads and streets.
Did you ever wonder who invented the stoplight? The person responsible for the stoplight is Garrett Augustus Morgan, Sr., an African-American, who was born in Paris, Kentucky, on March 4, 1877, to Sidney and Elizabeth (Reed) Morgan. Elizabeth Morgan had been a slave freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. She and Sidney had eleven children. Garrett Morgan was the seventh. He spent his early childhood working on the family farm with his sisters and brothers, while attending school. At the early age of 14, he left Kentucky and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, in search of employment. His education never went beyond elementary school, so he decided to hire a tutor while living in Cincinnati where he worked as a handyman for a wealthy landowner. He wanted to continue his studies in English grammar. Morgan moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1895 working for a clothing manufacturer as a sewing machine repairman. During his employment as a repairman, he invented a belt fastener for the sewing machine. He truly became a businessman in 1907 with the opening of his own sewing equipment and repair shop. He included a tailoring shop in 1909 that employed 32 employees. Morgan’s new company began to put on the market coats, suits, and dresses. These clothes were made with the equipment that Morgan himself had made.

Garrett Augustus Morgan Cleveland Businessman and Inventor Garrett Augustus Morgan is frequently credited as the inventor of the three-part traffic signal, and his "gas mask" (actually more of a safety hood than a functional mask), but these were only two of his numerous inventions and inventions were only a part of his remarkable life. Morgan's initial success was as an early manufacturer and marketer of hair straightening cream (Morgan Hair Refiner), hair dye, and accessories. With the money earned by the G.A. Morgan Hair Refining Company, Morgan financed a number of other inventions and financial ventures, among them the Morgan Safety Hood and the Morgan Automatic Traffic Signal. But Morgan didn't stop there in fact, he continued inventing throughout his life one of his last devices, developed in the 1950's, was a self-extinguishing cigarette! Morgan's first employment in Cleveland was as a sewing-machine repairman, and within a short time he acquired and managed his own shop. It was during this time, or so legend has it, that Morgan wiped his hands, which were covered with a lubricant used for the machines, on a bit of wooly cloth. When he returned to the shop the next day, the cloth was smooth. Interested in replicating this result, he experimented on a neighbor's Airedale dog, whose hair became so smooth that its owner "drove the cur from his house," not recognizing his own pet. Satisfied with his experiment, Morgan tried the same preparation on his own hair, and thus was born G.A. Morgan's Hair Refiner. From this preparation Morgan evolved a wide line of hair products, such that a few years later he could rightly claim to offer "the only complete line of hair preparations in the world."

Unable to sell his gas mask to fire departments in the South, Morgan hired an actor friend to pose as an inventor while he dressed up as an Indian chief. The actor would announce that Big Chief Mason would go inside a smoke-filled tent for ten minutes. When Morgan emerged after 25 minutes unharmed, people were amazed. Business boomed.

Garrett Morgan's safety hood saved the lives of countless firefighters and others. He was born in Kentucky during the Reconstruction era, in 1877. His father was the mixed-race son of a slave and a Confederate colonel, John Hunt Morgan. His mother, half Indian and half black, was the daughter of a Baptist minister. His race would impact Morgan's career profoundly. Inventive Nature
Though Morgan only had a sixth-grade education, he had a mechanical genius and an entrepreneurial bent. Finding work in a textile factory, he learned how the machines worked, and became the only Negro adjuster, fixing and improving mechanical problems. In 1907 he opened his own repair shop, and soon launched a clothing business with his wife, an immigrant seamstress from Bavaria. It was an era of difficulty for African Americans, but Morgan made money, becoming the first black man in Cleveland to own a car. He branched out into cosmetic products, joined a new organization called the

Nearly everything about his life is extraordinary , starting off with his family. He was one of 11 kids born to Sydney and Elizabeth Morgan, who were both former slaves. He was born in 1877 in Paris Kentucky, but wasted no time in furthering his chances in life.
When he was 14 he moved himself north to Cincinnati in Ohio, then on to Cleveland. He worked as a handyman to make ends meet and paid for his own tutor to teach him English grammar.
In 1895 he went to work as a sewing machine repair man for a clothing manufacturer, which proved a really good move as news spread fast about how brilliant he was at his work. By 1907 he had his own sewing machine equipment and repair shop and this he added to by 1909 with his own tailoring business employing 34 people and using machines he had designed and built himself. He had also married Mary Anne Hassek, and they went on to have three sons together.

hi-res
Garrett Morgan produced a series of successful inventions in the beginning of the 20th Century.
Morgan's first well-known invention was the safety hood, a forerunner of the gas mask. The hood was popularized during a tragic accident in Cleveland, Ohio. When 32 workers were trapped during a tunnel collapse under Lake Erie in 1916, rescuers were unable to reach them because smoke, dust and fumes blocked their way. Morgan and several volunteers using the masks were able to reach the trapped men and rescue several survivors.
In 1923, Morgan patented his best-known invention, the three-way traffic signal. As an early enthusiast of automobiles, Morgan quickly recognized the need for better traffic control on congested city streets. His signal was based on signs that signaled stop and go. He sold his patent rights to General Electric for $40,000, which developed an electrical version.
Born is Paris, Kentucky, Morgan settled in Cleveland as a young man. He was an advocate for racial equality, forming one of the first black fraternities in the country at Cleveland's Western Reserve University. As a self-educated man he was concerned with the safety and welfare of his fellow citizens. He was honored as a pioneering citizen at the Emancipation Centennial Celebration in 1963.

The ternary calculating machine of Thomas Fowler home about contact ... Wanted Fowler's machine as described by Augustus DeMorgan Augustus DeMorgan (1806-1871), first chair of Mathematics at University College, London, cofounder of the London Mathematical Society and Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, was one of the most prominent mathematicians of his day. He was a prolific author and is credited with key contributions to the then nascent field of symbolic logic. The machine consists of four essentially distinct parts. The first, second and third exhibit the multiplicand, multiplier and product, or quotient, divisor and dividend, according as the question to be worked is one of multiplication or division. The fourth is a carrying apparatus, which though at present detached, and employed to reduce the result to its simplest form after the main operation has been performed, might without much difficulty be attached to the multiplier or divisor, and work with it. Let us now suppose a question of multiplication, both multiplier and multiplicand being exhibited in the ternary system. The multiplicand consists of nothing but a number of rods, each bearing an index, and each movable backwards and forwards. When the indices are all arranged in line, and in one particular line, this multiplicand is 000.... But if any one of the rods be advanced by a certain space forwards, the digit +1 is indicated as occupying the numeral column which that rod represents, and if it be moved the same space backwards, -1 is the digit indicated. This, which we may call the frame of the multiplicand, is thus a collection of rods, not itself connected with any machinery, but only useful as indicating the manner in which the frame of the multiplier is to act.

AUGUSTUS DEMORGAN Augustus DeMorgan was born in 1806 in Madras Province, India, where his father was employed by the East India Company. He received his early education in English private schools, which he hated. He had lost the use of one eye in infancy which made him shy and solitary and it exposed him to schoolboy pranks. One such prank was for a boy to sneak up on DeMorgan on his blind side, and holding a sharp-pointed penknife to his cheek, to suddenly call his name. When DeMorgan turned around he would be poked by the point of the knife on his face. DeMorgan did not allow other children to bully him and proved this by chasing down and beating up the boy who did this. DeMorgan attended Trinity College in Cambridge. He was recognized as far superior in mathematical ability to any other person there, but his refusal to commit to studying resulted in his finishing only fourth in his class. He referred to himself as a "Christian unattached" which was not acceptable by the university for proceeding into the M.A. degree program so he was ineligible forfellowship. He then decided to try for the Bar, but a short time after entering Lincoln's Inn he learned that he might have a chance to teach mathematics at the newly formed University of London. DeMorgan had strong support from the leading Cambridge mathematicians which helped him be appointed as the first professor of mathematics to the University of London (later called University College) in 1828. He taught here for thirty years.
