Augustus de Morgan British logician and mathematician. Boole and he invented symbolic logic, i.e. logic expressed in terms of algebraic operations. In addition, he was a powerful advocate of the Laplacian method of inverse probability in the Britain; thus his work on probability theory and his analysis of scientific inference by means of probability theory are also important. His name is associated with various miscellaneous problems. One of them is the famous "Four Color Problem": four colors are sufficient for distinguishing each area from any adjacent area by a different color from each other, on any map (this is a sloppy formulation, but a precise one can be given!). One day in October 1852, a student asked de Morgan whether this problem can be solved, and de Morgan in turn asked William Rowan Hamilton, a boss mathematician of the day in the Britain. Thus a long struggle with this problem began, and it was solved by K. Appel and W. Haken in 1976, by employing large computers at the University of Illinois.

Executive summary: De Morgan's Laws English mathematician and logician, was born in June 1806, at Madura, in the Madras presidency. His father, Colonel John De Morgan, was employed in the East India Company's service, and his grandfather and great-grandfather had served under Warren Hastings . On the mother's side he was descended from James Dodson, F.R.S., author of the Anti-logarithmic Canon and other mathematical works of merit, and a friend of Abraham de Moivre . Seven months after the birth of Augustus, Colonel De Morgan brought his wife, daughter and infant son to England, where he left them during a subsequent period of service in India, dying in 1816 on his way home. Augustus De Morgan received his early education in several private schools, and before the age of fourteen years had learned Latin, Greek and some Hebrew, in addition to acquiring much general knowledge. At the age of sixteen years and a half he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, and studied mathematics, partly under the tuition of

His mother was descended from James Dodson , who computed a table of anti-logarithms, that is, the numbers corresponding to exact logarithms . It was the time of the Sepoy rebellion in India, and Col. De Morgan removed his family to England when Augustus was seven months old. As his father and grandfather had both been born in India, De Morgan used to say that he was neither English, nor Scottish, nor Irish, but a Briton "unattached," using the technical term applied to an undergraduate of Oxford or Cambridge who is not a member of any one of the Colleges. When De Morgan was ten years old, his father died. Mrs. De Morgan resided at various places in the southwest of England, and her son received his elementary education at various schools of no great account. His mathematical talents were unnoticed till he had reached the age of fourteen. A friend of the family accidentally discovered him making an elaborate drawing of a figure in

The Traditional Square of Opposition
This entry traces the historical development of the Square of Opposition, a collection of logical relationships traditionally embodied in a square diagram. This body of doctrine provided a foundation for work in logic for over two millenia. For most of this history, logicians assumed that negative particular propositions ("Some S is not P") are vacuously true if their subjects are empty. This validates the logical laws embodied in the diagram, and preserves the doctrine against modern criticisms. Certain additional principles ("contraposition" and "obversion") were sometimes adopted along with the Square, and they genuinely yielded inconsistency. By the nineteenth century an inconsistent set of doctrines was widely adopted. Strawson's 1952 attempt to rehabilitate the Square does not apply to the traditional doctrine; it does salvage the nineteenth century version but at the cost of yielding inferences that lead from truth to falsity when strung together.
