June 15th, 2003 Prime Suspects By Ben Yandell What is the most down-to-earth yet significant problem in mathematics? In the beginning, you learn to count — 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 — and to add these numbers. Next comes multiplication, a way to batch-process multiple additions. A great observation can then be made: Some of the counting numbers can be obtained by multiplying two smaller counting numbers together — like 6, which is 2 times 3 — but others — like 5 — cannot. Irreducibility is key in mathematics and science. The numbers that are not reducible to smaller factors are called prime numbers. How many prime numbers are there? Are they relative anomalies or common? Euclid supplied a proof that the number of primes is infinite: There is no largest prime. All right, if we are given a number, however high, can we find a way to tell how many primes there are below that number without actually counting them? The answer, at least in a first approximation, turns out to be surprisingly simple. Dividing the number you are interested in by its natural logarithm (there is a logarithm button on many calculators) gives the number of primes that will be found beneath it. This result is one of the jewels of mathematics, the "prime number theorem."

A brief description of the book Prime Obsession
Spring-Summer 2003 Prime Obsession is a nonfiction book about the Riemann Hypothesis, by general agreement the greatest unsolved problem in mathematics. The book has two aims:
  • To explain the Hypothesis to readers who are not professional mathematicians. To give historical and biographical background matter to humanize the Hypothesis.
So far as possible I have separated out these two aims. Of the book's 22 chapters, the odd-numbered ones concentrate on the math, the even-numbered ones on the people and events. It's not a completely watertight separation, but I hope that a reader who gives up on the math will be able to continue with the background material. Bernhard Riemann was a German mathematician who lived from 1826 to 1866. In 1859 he presented a paper to the Berlin Academy. The title of the paper was: "On the Number of Prime Numbers less than a Given Quantity." As the title suggests, the problem Riemann tackled in his paper was a straightforward matter of arithmetic. How many prime numbers are there less than twenty? Well, there are eight: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17 and 19. How many are there less than a hundred? Less than a trillion? Is there a general rule for figuring out how many? If so, what is it?

    Prime Obsession:
Bernhard Riemann and the Greatest Unsolved Problem in Mathematics
    by John Derbyshire
    Reviewed by S. W. Graham
The April 30, 1945 issue of Time contained an article about Hans Rademacher's failed attempt to disprove the Riemann Hypothesis (RH). According to the article, "No layman can understand it [the Riemann Hypothesis], and no mathematician has ever proved it." Fifty-eight years later, the Riemann Hypothesis remains open, but John Derbyshire (pronounced "DAH-bi-shuh") has taken on the task of explaining it to the layman. He brings solid credentials to the task, both in mathematics and in writing. His educational background is in mathematics ("I hit the wall with a topic called Functional Analysis"), he regularly writes a column for National Review and he is the author of the novel Seeing Calvin Coolidge in a Dream . In the preface to this book, he writes "My original goal was, in fact, to explain the Riemann Hypothesis without using any calculus at all . [Emphasis in the original.] This proved to be a tad over-optimistic, and there is a very small quantity of very elementary calculus in just three chapters, explained as it goes along."
