Fermat, Pierre de Francouzský právník, který studoval matematiku ve svých volných chvílích. Pøestože matematiku studoval jen jako amatér, byly jeho teorie na velmi výjimeèné úrovni a ne nadarmo se o nìm øíká, že patøí mezi nejvìtší matematiky všech dob. Mìl takový zvyk psát si své poznámky na okraje knih nebo je posílat dopisem pøátelùm, než je publikovat. Objevil analytickou geometrii nezávisle na Descartesovi, ale nepublikoval ji. Spolu s Pascalem vystavìli teorii pravdìpodobnosti a sám v optice objevil princip nekratšího èasu, dnes pojmenovaný na jeho poèest Fermatùv princip. Ten spoèívá v tom, že svìtlo mezi dvìma body neprostupuje prostøedím nekratší možnou cestou, ale vybírá si cestu, která je èasovì nejkratší. Dále provedl mnoho základních výpoètù a odvodil mnoho zákonù v optice. Plynnì hovoøil Francouzsky, Italsky, Latinsky, Španìlsky a Øecky. Byl proslulý psaním poznámek na okraje knih a jednou odvodil, že rovnice x n y n z n nemá celoèíselné øešení pro n >2. He also did much to establish coordinate geometry (see Cartesian coordinates ) and invented a number of methods for determining maxima and minima that were later of use to Newton in applying the calculus. He noted without proof, although he claimed to have discovered one, the assertion now known as Fermat's Last Theorem, which states that the equation x n y n z n , where x, y, z, and n are nonzero integers, has no solutions for n that are greater than 2. Prizes were offered for a proof of this theorem, and attempted proofs resulted in many developments in the theory of numbers. British mathematician Andrew Wiles described a proof of the conjecture in 1993, but a gap in the proof required additional work, which was completed in 1994. However, Wiles's proof involved mathematical concepts that were unknown in Fermat's lifetime, so whether Fermat had a valid proof remains conjecture. PIERRE FERMAT EL PROBLEMA MAS DIFICIL DEL MUNDO FERMAT Pierre de (1601-1665) Matemático francés nacido el 17 de agosto de 1601 en Beaumont de Lomagne. Su padre, que era comerciante de cuero, lo envío a estudiar derecho a Toulouse , donde el 14 de mayo de 1631 se instala como abogado. Ese mismo año se casa con Louise de Long, prima de su madre, que le dió tres hijos, uno de ellos, Clément Samuel, que llegó a ser el albacea científico de su padre, y dos hermanas que fueron monjas. En 1632 conoce a Carcavi siendo ambos consejeros del Parlamento en Toulouse y se hicieron amigos. Fermat envió muchos de sus trabajos a Carcavi después que éste se mudó a París como bibliotecario real en 1636. En 1650 Fermat envió a Carcavi un tratado titulado: Novus secundarum et ulterioris radicum in analyticis usus. Este trabajo contiene el primer método conocido de eliminación y Fermat quería publicarlo. Se les pidió a Pascal y a Carcavi que buscaran un editor para el trabajo. Carcavi se acercó a Huygens, tratando de publicar no sólo este trabajo sino también otros trabajos que Fermat le había enviado. Ni Carcavi ni Pascal tuvieron éxito y los trabajos de Fermat nunca se publicaron. La amistad de Carcavi con Fermat duró por muchos años. En 1648 asciende a la Conserjería Real en el Parlamento local de Toulouse, cargo que desempeñó con dignidad y gran talento durante 17 años; durante 34 años dedicó su vida al servicio del Estado. Finalmente, murió en Castres, Francia, el 12 de enero de 1665, a los 65 años.

Fermat, Pierre (1601-1665). Fermat was a famous French lawyer. He produced great contributions in the field of Calculus. He and the French philosopher, Rene Descartes (1596-1650) are considered the inventors of analytic geometry. It was Fermat and Descartes who introduced the point of view that is characteristic of analytic geometry. They considered curves defined by equations as well as by geometric properties. Moreover, they made extensive use of the close association between algebra of equations and the geometry of the curves. Fermat and Descartes used only what corresponds to the positive half of the modern horizontal coordinate axis and did not use an explicit vertical axis. To plot a point corresponding to positive solutions of an equation in two unknowns A and E , Fermat measured the distance A along a horizontal line from a fixed point. The fixed point corresponded to the origin in a modern coordinate plane. He then measured the distance E along a line at a fixed angle, but not necessarily a right angle, to the horizontal line. Fermat used infinitesimals to find the tangent lines to curves as early as 1636.
