Fermatzahlen. Sie haben die Form

2 for which the equation xn + yn = zn holds true for the positive integers x, y, and z. Fermat claimed in his note to have discovered a '"very wonderful demonstration" (demonstratio sane mirabilis) of this theorem that the margin was too narrow to contain, a claim that has tantalized mathematicians ever since. The remainder of Fermat's notes contained a large number of theorems on the theory of numbers, only one of which he himself proved; the rest were proven in the eighteenth century' (Norman catalogue).
Of course since the above was written Fermat's theorem has been proved by Andrew Wiles, with the collaboration of several other mathematicians.
The collation of this copy agrees with Norman and several other copies recorded. However, a very few copies contain a portrait, and occasionally an errata leaf, both of which appear to have been issued later as witnessed by the number of copies in their original bindings, as this one, with no evidence of removal.

Cayley, Arthur Gauss, Karl Friedrich Euclid Fermat, Pierre ... Pascal, Blaise Cayley, Arthur Cayley, Arthur (1821 - 1895) - Englishman born and raised in Russia for 8 years before moving back to England. He was a mathematician and lawyer. Arthur studied at at Kings College School where his gift for mathematics became apparent. Later he studdied at Trinity College from 1838-1842. He became a lawyer and quit in 1863 to be Sadleirian of Pure Mathematics at Cambridge. The most important of his work is in developing the algebra of matrices (the Cayley-Hamilton Theorem), work in non-euclidean geometry and n-dimensional geometry. (1596 - 1650) - Born in La Haye (now Descartes),Touraine, France. Due to a medical condition he was granted to permision to remain in bed until 11am, whice he did everyday of his life. He was a philosopher who was primarily interested in mathematics. He lived in Paris for a while before travelling throughout Europe to countries such as Holland where began work on his first major treatise on physics. which includes his application of algebra to geometry from which we now have Cartesian geometry.

Pierre de Fermat
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Pierre de Fermat Pierre de Fermat August 20 January 12 ) was a French lawyer at the Parlement of Toulouse , southern France , and a mathematician who is given credit for the development of modern calculus . In particular, he is the precursor of differential calculus with his method of finding the greatest and the smallest ordinates of curved lines, analogous to that of the then unknown differential calculus . Perhaps even more important, his brilliant researches in the theory of numbers entitle him to rank as the founder of the modern theory. He also made notable contributions to analytic geometry and probability Fermat worked on number theory while preparing an edition of Diophantus , and the notes and comments thereon contained the numerous theorems of considerable elegance necessary to develop the theory of numbers. Fermat is famous for his "Enigma" that was an extension of Pythagorean Theorem, also known as Fermat's last theorem , which baffled mathematicians for more than 300 years, and was only finally proven in . Together with Ren© Descartes , Fermat was one of the two leading mathematicians of the first half of the 17th century . Independently of Descartes, he discovered the fundamental principle of

By Leen Veirman, Ine Weyn and Sophie Verhaert Pierre de Fermat Born : 17 August 1601 Died : 12 January 1665 "I have discovered a truly remarkable proof which this margin is too small to contain."
When a book called: " " was published in 1621, it interested Fermat very much. There was a question in the Arithmetica : assuming that x, y, z and n are positive integers, when does x n + y n = z n have a solution? Fermat claimed : "I have discovered a truly remarkable proof, that it is impossible to separate any power above the second into powers of the same degree, but this margin is too narrow to contain it". The marginal notes only became known after Fermat's dead, when his son Samuel published an edition of Bachet's translation of Diophantus's Arithmetica with his father's notes in 1670. Andrew Wiles, professor of Princeton, proved Fermat's assertion in June 1993 but Wiles withdrew the claim when problems emerged later in 1993. In November 1994 Wiles again claimed to have a correct proof. Be that as it may, a proof of such enormous complexity, requiring some 1000 pages to present, will need to be checked and rechecked in every detail by the few mathematicians capable of doing so. Prof. Van Geel and Cornelissen from the R.U.G. called the proof "Fermat -Wiles" which confirms that there can be no counter-example to Fermat's Last Theorem.

Pierre de Fermat
French Mathematician
8-17-1601 to 12-12-1665
Pierre Fermat's father was a wealthy leather merchant and second consul of Beaumont- de- Lomagne. He was probably educated in his early years at the local Franciscan monastery. He attended the University of Toulouse before moving to Bordeau in the second half of the 1620s. In Bordeau he began his first serious mathematical researches and in 1629 he had completed his restoration of Apollonius's "Plane Loci." In Bordeau he was in contact with Beaugrand and produced important work on maxima and minima. From Bordeau Fermat went to Orléans where he studied law at the University. He received a degree in civil law and he purchased the offices of councillor at the parliament in Toulouse. Fermat's meteoric rise through the government is evidenced by his multiple appointments between 1631 and 1653. News of his death due to the plague of the 1650s was exaggerated: I informed you earlier of the death of Fermat. He is alive, and we no longer fear for his health, even though we had counted him among the dead a short time ago. The following report, made to Colbert the leading figure in France at the time, has a ring of truth:-
