Executive summary: Coulomb's Law Military service: French Army (military engineer) intendant des eaux et fontaines , and retired to a small estate which he possessed at Blois. He was recalled to Paris for a time in order to take part in the new determination of weights and measures, which had been decreed by the Revolutionary government. Of the National Institute he was one of the first members; and he was appointed inspector of public instruction in 1802. But his health was already very feeble, and four years later he died at Paris on the 23rd of August 1806. Coulomb is distinguished in the history alike of mechanics and of electricity and magnetism. In 1779 he published an important investigation of the laws of friction ( ), which was followed twenty years later by a memoir on fluid resistance. In 1785 appeared his

Charles Augustin de Coulomb Charles Augustin Coulomb's father was Henry Coulomb and his mother was Catherine Bajet. Both his parents came from families which were well known in their fields. His father's family were important in the legal profession and in the administration of the Languedoc region of France, and his mother's family were also quite wealthy. After being brought up in Angoulême, the capital of Angoumois in southwestern France, Coulomb's family moved to Paris. In Paris he entered the Collège Mazarin, where he received a good classical grounding in language, literature, and philosophy, and he received the best available teaching in mathematics, astronomy, chemistry and botany. At this stage in his education there was a crisis for Coulomb. Despite his father's good standing, he had made unsuccessful financial speculations, had lost all his money and moved from Paris to Montpellier. Coulomb's mother remained in Paris but Coulomb had a disagreement with her over the direction his career should take so he left Paris and went to Montpellier to live with his father. At this stage Coulomb's interests were mainly in mathematics and astronomy and while in Montpellier he joined the Society of Sciences there in March 1757 and read several papers on these topics to the Society. Coulomb wanted to enter the Ecole du Génie at Mézières but realised that to succeed in passing the entrance examinations he needed to be tutored. In October 1758 he went to Paris to receive the tutoring necessary to take the examinations. Camus had been appointed as examiner for artillery schools in 1755 and it was his

Charles Augustin de Coulomb
Charles Augustin de Coulb was born in France, to a family with wealth and social postion, in 1736, and he died in 1806. During his youth he was left penniless after his father made some bad investments. He argued with his mother and left home. He was educated in Paris and served time in the army. With the start of the French Revolution he fled to Paris. He returned in 1795 and was appointed to the Institue de France. He then became Inspector-Gerneral of Public Instruction. His experiments in Mechanical resistance led him to one of two laws. One relating friction to the normal pressure. The second and most famous of Coulomb's Law is for electrostatic charges. Which he observed that the force between charges is as the recciprocal of the square of the distance between. The SI unit is of charge, the Colomb, is named in his honor. Paris, August 23, 1806] Although Coulomb is best remembered for his work with electric charges, he was also the first to show that the force of friction is always proportional to the pressure exerted at 90° to the surface. His experiments with electricity, using a sensitive apparatus called the torsion balance, showed that the force between two charges displays inverse variation with respect to the square of the distance between the charges and direct variation with respect to the product of their size (mathematically the same as the law of gravity). Charles Augustin de Coulomb : 1736 - 1806 The French physicist Charles Augustin de Coulomb, (b. June 14, 1736, d. Aug. 23, 1806), discovered the law of force between two charged bodies. After his graduation from the Ecole du Genie at Mezieres in 1761, he served as a military engineer in the West Indies and in other obscure French posts. In 1781, he was permanently stationed in Paris and was able to devote more time to research. Coulomb then turned his attention to physics and published (1785-91) seven memoirs on electricity and magnetism. He adapted a torsion balance to measure electrical forces and demonstrated (1785) the inverse-square law of forces for the case of two bodies of opposite electrical charge. In 1787 he further proved the inverse-square law for attractive and repulsive forces in both electricity and magnetism, and he later showed that the force is also proportional to the product of the charges, a relationship now called Coulomb's Law . Coulomb may be considered to have extended Newtonian mechanics to a new realm of physics. The unit of electrical charge is named for him. Sheldon J. Kopperl

BIOGRAPHY
Coulomb, Charles Augustin de:
COULOMB, Charles Augustin de (1736-1806), French physicist, pioneer in electrical theory, born in Angouleme. He served as a military engineer for France in the West Indies, but retired to Blois, France, at the time of the French Revolution to continue research in magnetism, friction, and electricity. In 1777 he invented the torsion balance for measuring the force of magnetic and electrical attraction. With this invention, Coulomb was able to formulate the principle, now known as Coulomb's law, governing the interaction between electric charges. In 1779 Coulomb published the treatise Theorie des machines simples (Theory of Simple Machines), an analysis of friction in machinery. After the war Coulomb came out of retirement and assisted the new government in devising a metric system of weights and measures. The unit of quantity used to measure electrical charges, the coulomb, was named for him.
