An Introduction to the Coriolis Force
Henry M. Stommel and Dennis W. Moore The purpose of this work is to offer a clear physical explanation of the Coriolis force. Meterologists and oceanographers have invoked this somewhat mysterious force to explain the apparent equilibrium of a system of wind patterns or ocean currents in the presence of horizontal pressure gradients so that the velocity of fluid lies among isobars. The force is named for Gustave Gaspard Coriolis (1792-1843), a French mathematician who studied its effects. In order to make the mathematical concepts more tangible, the authors have prepared a series of computer exercises, written in BASIC for the IMB-AT with Enhanced Color Display, that can be copied piece by piece. For those who prefer not to make up their own copy of the program, there are instructions on how to order a pre-made copy in the Introduction of this book. These programs will provide an interactive tool for experimenting with a variety of problems involving the idea of Coriolis force. An Introduction to the Coriolis Force will be most useful for studying the hydrodynamics of the ocean and atmosphere. It also presents many aspects of classical mechanics/dynamics physics. Its straightforward explanations and unique accessibility should help explain the complexities of this mysterious force, about which many scientists have had lingering uncertainties since it was first described in 1831.

The Coriolis Effect
I was asked recently that if tropical cyclones rotate clockwise south of the equator and anti-clockwise north of the equator, what happens to them on the equator or when they cross the equator? Firstly, can they cross the equator? No, tropical cyclones cannot cross the equator. The steering winds, the winds that move the tropical cyclone, blow away from the equator and cannot cross it. But can they form on the equator? The answer is, again, no. The reason is that the Coriolis Effect is not strong enough to get them going. So what is the Coriolis Effect?

Coriolis Effect Coriolis effect is an inertial force described by the 19th-century French engineer-mathematician Gustave-Gaspard Coriolis in 1835. Coriolis showed that, if the ordinary Newtonian laws of motion of bodies are to be used in a rotating frame of reference, an inertial forceacting to the right of the direction of body motion for counterclockwise rotation of the reference frame or to the left for clockwise rotationmust be included in the equations of motion. The effect of the Coriolis force is an apparent deflection of the path of an object that moves within a rotating coordinate system. The object does not actually deviate from its path, but it appears to do so because of the motion of the coordinate system. The Coriolis deflection is therefore related to the motion of the object, the motion of the Earth, and the latitude. For this reason, the magnitude of the effect is given by 2 sin , in which is the velocity of the object, is the angular velocity of the Earth, and is the latitude. The Coriolis effect has great significance in astrophysics and stellar dynamics, in which it is a controlling factor in the directions of rotation of sunspots. It is also significant in the earth sciences, especially meteorology, physical geology, and oceanography, in that the Earth is a rotating frame of reference, and motions over the surface of the Earth are subject to acceleration from the force indicated. Thus, the Coriolis force figures prominently in studies of the dynamics of the atmosphere, in which it affects prevailing winds and the rotation of storms, and in the hydrosphere, in which it affects the rotation of the oceanic currents.

In physics , the Coriolis effect is an inertial force first described by Gaspard-Gustave Coriolis , a French scientist, in . When the equations of motion are formulated in a rotating coordinate system a term arises which looks like a force, called the Coriolis force . See also centrifugal force In changing from an essentially inertial coordinate system (such as the "frame of the fixed stars") to a rotating frame of reference (such as that of the Earth's surface), a term appears in the equation of motion described by the formula for Coriolis force where bold indicates vector quantities, m is mass v is the velocity and is the angular velocity of the coordinate system. Note that this equation ignores the second-order term in , which in geophysical terms is small, and can in any case be absorbed into the gravitational potential term. Hurricane Isabel east of the Bahamas on 2003-09-15. Photograph courtesy NASA. This equation means that the force will be proportional to the velocity of the object and the rotation of the coordinate system. The force will be in a direction perpendicular to the velocity (and thus will do no work). If an object is travelling on earth in the northern hemisphere, the Coriolis force will deflect the object to the right. In the southern hemisphere the reverse is true, while at the equator the horizontal component of the force is zero for horizontal motions. For instance, the effect breaks up the

Legend has it that Galileo muttered the words "Eppur si muove" (It still moves) under his breathe after abjuring his "errors and heresies" before the Roman Inquisition in thew matter of teaching the forbidden Copernican system. This story is almost certainly false, but it touches upon the principal objection to the Heliocentric System since the time of Aristotle: How do you prove that the Earth really does rotate upon its axis and revolve around the Sun? The Need for Speed A major conceptual barrier to accepting the rotation and revolution of the Earth is that the speeds required are enormous.
Speed of the Earth's Rotation at the Equator:
Circumference of the Earth at the Equator = 40,000 kilometers
Time to complete one Rotation = 24 hours
Speed of Rotation = Distance/Time = 40,000 km / 24 hr =
