Florimond de Beaune was born in Blois which is in central France, on the Loire River and, at the time de Beaune was born there, it was almost a second capital of France. He was educated in Paris where he went on to study law. After military service he seems to have had little need for earning a living. He became a jurist to the court in Blois and was only an amateur mathematician. He inherited an estate near Blois and he spent a lot of his time on this estate. His second marriage was one which brought de Beaune a substantial amount of money. It enabled him to build up an extensive library as well as to build himself an observatory. In fact his library contained a good proportion of astronomy works as well as mathematics volumes. De Beaune produced the first important introduction to Descartes ' cartesian geometry. He wrote

His other more or less original work is the Chirugie franciose (1570). Much of his effort was directed toward editing and translating earlier scientific and medical writings.

2. Father
Occupation: Gentry
Florimond de Beaune (the father) was the illegitimate son of Jean II de Beaune. He was legitimized so that Florimond the mathematician inherited a title of nobility. Everything about this smacks of Gentry rather than Aristocracy, and so I list it. The father is repeatedly referred to as "Ecuyer." Florimond the mathematician (and undoubtedly his father before him) was Seigneur de Goulioust (or Goulioux); i.e., he inherited an estate. However, he married (initally) a woman from the bourgeoisie of Blois.
It appears clear that the father was not a man of great wealth, but I do not see how to deny that the circumstances were affluent.

He studied law at Paris. There is no mention of a degree; a man of his status had no need for such.

Toxteth Park, near Liverpool, England, 1618, d. Toxteth Park, January 13, 1641] observes the transit of Venus on November 24, which he had predicted. The transit is the passage of the planet across the face of the Sun, which, because of slight differences in the angles of the orbits of Earth and Venus, occurs only twice each century. Horrocks is the first person known to have observed and reported the transit.
