Harold Davenport 30 October 9 June ) was an English mathematician, known for his extensive work in number theory . He was born in Huncoat Lancashire . He was educated at Accrington Grammar School, the University of Manchester , where he graduated in , and Trinity College, Cambridge . He became a research student of J. E. Littlewood , working on the question of the distribution of quadratic residues The attack on the distribution question leads quickly to problems that are now seen to be special cases of those on local zeta-functions , for the particular case of some special hyperelliptic curves such as
Y X X X X k
Bounds for the zeroes of the local zeta-function immediately imply bounds for sums
x x x x k
where χ is the Legendre symbol modulo a prime number p , and the sum is taken over a complete set of residues mod p In the light of this connection it was appropriate that, with a Trinity research fellowship, Davenport in

Published: 05/22/1997 Types: Nation-World Page: A2 Editor's Note: To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Mormon Trail, The Salt Lake Tribune is offering this day-by-day account of the Mormon Pioneers' original trek from Winter Quarters, Nebraska, to the Great Salt Lake Valley. Tribune history writer Harold Schindler , using diaries, letters, journals and reminiscences that have come to light this century, has fleshed out the following narrative. May 22, 1847 All was peaceful in the pioneer camp. There has been no sign of Indians since the sighting of the Sioux yesterday. The wagons moved out at 8:00 this morning, making a more crooked trail than usual, having to bend south near the banks of the Platte River because of the soft, swampy, and uneven bottom lands. After five and a half miles, the pioneers crossed a shallow stream they named Crab Creek because someone thought they saw a crab in it. The crab was more than likely a crayfish, and the stream, today's Coldwater Creek, was about twenty feet wide. According to William Clayton's description, the bluffs and the North Platte River are about a mile apart here, but on the other side the bluffs recede for two miles and have lost their craggy, steep appearance. On the north side, however, they begin to be craggy and almost perpendicular, though not very high. The wagons halted at noon after seven and one-quarter miles and, from the appearance of the terrain, some believe heavy storms are frequent in this region.

Harold Davenport 's parents were Nancy Barnes and Percy Davenport. Nancy was the daughter of John Barnes who owned Perseverance Mill, and Percy worked for John Barnes, first as a clerk and later as the company secretary. Nancy and Percy had two children, Harold having a younger sister Grace. Harold attended Accrington Grammar School from the age of about ten years. His main interests were mathematics and chemistry [7]:- He was much inspired by his chemistry master, Mr Ackroyd, and by his mathematics mistress, Miss Heap, 'a lady with enthusiasm for mathematics, who paid no attention - thank God - to any regular syllabus or curriculum there may have been'. There were other subjects which interested Harold too, for he loved reading and read every Dickens classic that he could borrow from the local Public Library. In 1924 he obtained two scholarships to attend Manchester University, one from Lancashire County and a university scholarship. He studied mathematics and chemistry at Manchester being taught complex analysis by

Davenport's Harold Stassen
Before I say a single word, I need to point out that I mean no disrespect to anyone. Candidates who step forward and then win are the ones who get to serve and even the semi-nutty ones attain a certain degree of legitamacy from that. Candidates who lose after a respectable effort generally earn some plaudits from their fellow citizens and have the satisfaction of having made a worthy effort.
Then there are the "perennial candidates". These are the ones who have run three or four (or many many more) times without winning. Heck, without even coming close. I have some admiration even for these candidates. They must have an awful lot of determination or optomism or both.
I admit that it's Todd Pirck's annoucement for at-large that put me onto this train of thought, but really what I'd like toknow is who you folks would pick as Davenport's #1 "perennial candidate".
