Vanguard Mathematician George Dantzig Dies
By Joe Holley Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, May 19, 2005; Page B06 George B. Dantzig, 90, a mathematician who devised a formula that revolutionized planning, scheduling, network design and other complex functions integral to modern-day business, industry and government, died May 13 at his home in Palo Alto, Calif. The cause of death, according to his daughter, was complications from diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Dantzig was known as the father of linear programming and as the inventor of the "simplex method," an algorithm for solving linear programming problems.

  • Read this Without Tears : WHAT IS EXPECTED OF YOU, see "Teaching at the University Level" by Stephen Zucker, Notices Amer. Math. Soc. 43 (1996), p. 863.
Course Description : This course is a very elementary introduction to the theory and applications of linear programming, illustrated by many examples.
  • Prerequisites and Development of Contents : This course should be accessible to any student with a $C-$ in Calculus and Applied Linear Algebra. The content of this course itself should very nearly coincide with that of Thies's book, excluding most of the parts on game theory. I am not perfect. However, be sure that I will do my very best to please you and your expectations.

People Niranjan Krishnan A YOUNG student walks into the classroom. He is late and finds the professor well into his lecture. He notices two problems written on the blackboard. He thinks they are routine assignments and copies them down in his notebook. He tries to work on them at home. Finding them slightly harder than the run-of-the-mill homework problems, he takes longer than usual to solve them. He apologises for the delay and submits the assignments to the professor after a few days. Six weeks later, on a Sunday morning, the student is shaken from sleep by his professor banging on the door. Excited, the professor tells him that he has written out an introduction to the student's research paper and wants to get it published immediately. The student does not have the foggiest idea what the professor is talking about. And so the professor breaks it to him: The two problems he presumed were homework assignments were statistical problems that had defied solution. And now that they had been solved, the professor was eager to get the student's results published right away.

It is awarded jointly by this Society (MPS) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). "The prize is awarded for original work which, by its breadth and scope, constitutes an outstanding contribution to the field of mathematical programming... The contribution(s) for which the award is made must be publicly available and may belong to any aspect of mathematical programming in its broadest sense. The contributions eligible for consideration are not restricted with respect to the age or number of their authors although preference should be given to the singly-authored work of 'younger' people... The prize will be awarded every three years. The award will be presented at each International Symposium of MPS except every third time at a national meeting of SIAM, either the national (spring) or fall meeting of SIAM in the year of the award." The first awards of the Prize were made at the
