Did mercury poisoning cause the death of Tycho Brahe?
His astronomical achievements
Tycho Brahe made a remarkable star catalogue of over 1000 stars, far more than any astronomer before him. He proved that comets are not objects in the atmosphere. He showed irregularities in the moons orbit. His wall quadrant and other instrument became widely copied and lead to improved stellar instruments. Kepler used Tycho Brahe's observations when he constructed his famous laws of planetary movement. Tycho Brahe biography

VELOCITAS TOTALIS ENQUETE SUR UNE PSEUDO-DENOMINATION MEDIEVALE Pierre SOUFFRIN

auquel on pourra se reporter pour les notes et la bibliographie.
Summary The history of medieval kinematics received a noticable attention and has been amply documented within the last decades. However the understanding of the texts edited is generally biaised by the formidable pressure of the classical (post-newtonian) concepts of velocity, together with somewhat naive views on the content of this classical tradition (cf. Souffrin 1992 Rev. Hist. Sci.). In the contemporary historical literature, this misunderstanding is related with inaccuracies concerning the very basic vocabulary of the scolastic and medieval kinematics. It is generally assumed that the instantaneous and the holistic measures of motions received the respective denominations of gradus velocitatis (or equivalent other qualification of velocitas ) and velocitas totalis . As a consequence, velocitas occuring without qualification is generally supposed to be an incomplete denomination implying, according to the context, an implicit qualification such as instantanea or totalis . However, my studies on Galileo's early works on the theory of motion led me to the view that

Nico (circa May 2002) Yes, Nico's first set of legs are #2 pencils Nico is a quadruped robot which is based upon principles of 4-legged locomotion illustrated in nature. The background for Nico's basic body plan and leg design can be found on our page about locomotion in 4-legged creatures . The present implementation is a greatly simplified form of nature's own plan, but one which can still perform movements in a similar manner. Nico's purpose is the study of various gait possibilities. Nico is named after Nicole d'Oresme , who was one of the first to make the logical connection between geometry, numbers, and algebra - essentially the idea of graphs - about 200 years before "Mr. Cartesian Coordinates" Rene Descartes was born. Nico has been designed to be easily extended and eminently hackable. The following describes the basic design plan and goals for this project. Capabilities Goals

If you want to make a statement with a great many qualifications, put some of the qualifications in separate sentences. - Sir Bertrand Russell FIGURE: The reservations and many terse-looking statements blend on several levels. One aim of this series is to assist self-help in a brand new way of writing - it is a succinct style. It should help against petty thinking and the like. Here is the connection to a still living tradition:
In folklore many sorts of reservations are subsumed and presupposed (quite as Sir Bertrand would have it): (1) You are not supposed to believe all proverbs literally, or in just one way. (2) Many tales have additional meanings (metaphoric, allegoric, etc) (3) Idiomatic expressions may employ typified and suggestive elements. (4) And so on.
To derive benefit from folk-style teachings, learn subsumed reservations. To train yourself in the art, lessons may be helpful, and a healthy, warm, cosy, and supportive group - and it could be your family.

This question has been asked repeatedly since the 19th century, when the domination of the globe by Western nations became indisputable, through the 1960s, when this domination was finally cast into doubt, up until today, although in a somewhat modified form: what is it that has made Western, male-dominant, ruling-class culture so successful in controlling the world? The two questions are similar but fundamentally different. The first presupposes a "progress" model of history (Whig, Marxian, Deweyian) and implies the justification of the Western humanistic culture's triumph. The second (post-Marxist, Heidegerrian, "Frankfurtian") departs from a belief, summarized by Paolo Rossi in
