Diderot agreed to work as a co-editor on the project along with the mathematician, Jean Le Rond d'Alembert, who was a member of the Academy of Sciences. Diderot soon changed the nature of the publication by broadening its scope. The goal of the was to outline the present state of knowledge about the sciences, arts, and crafts, and to make the knowledge possessed by the few accessible to the many. Each subject was assigned to be written by the person or persons best acquainted with it, and was to be handled with as near an approach to freedom as the censors would permit. It was revolutionary in that it was the first encyclopedia to bring together the great minds of the time. Jean le Rond d'Alembert Der französische Mathematiker, Literat und Philosoph kam am 16. November 1717 als Sohn der Marquise de Tencin zur Welt. Kurz nach der Geburt wurde er von seiner Mutter auf den Stufen einer Kirche ausgesetzt. Zur damaligen Zeit war es üblich, Findlingskinder nach ihrem Fundort zu benennen. Daher taufte man den Säugling auf Jean le Rond. Er wuchs als Adoptivsohn einer armen Glaserfamilie auf. Sein leiblicher Vater, der Offizier Destouches, erkannte seinen Sohn niemals offiziell an. Dennoch ermöglichte er ihm durch seine großzügige finanzielle Unterstützung die beste Ausbildung. D'Alembert, wie er sich mit zwölf Jahren nannte, besuchte ein jansenistisches Collège. Danach begann er zunächst das Theologiestudium, begeisterte sich jedoch bald für die Fächer Mathematik, Medizin und Jura. Bereits als 24-Jähriger wurde der talentierte Schriftsteller und Wissenschaftler in die Académie Royal des Sciences Statt dessen übernahm er ab 1748 gemeinsam mit Denis Diderot die Herausgabe der Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des Sciences, des Arts et des Métiers par une société de Gens de Lettres

Poté co se stal slavným matematikem, odmítl svou matku, která se snažila se stát souèástí jeho rodiny. Osobnì se znal s Lagrangem . V roce 1743 publikoval D'Alembertùv princip v díle Traité de Dynamique, který se stal mocným nástrojem pro výpoèty v mechanice. Studoval také astrofyziku, ve které vyøešil precesi rovnodennosti a byl také prvním, kdo našel a spoèítal vlnovou rovnici. Neúspìšnì se pokoušel prokázat základní teorém algebry, ve Francii stále známý jako D'Alembertùv teorém. V roce 1752 objevil Cauchy Riemannovy podmínky (èasto pøiøazované Cauchymu nebo Riemannovi ). Obhajoval používání limit v diferenciálním poètu. Spolu s Diderotem napsal monumentální encyklopedii o 28 svazcích Dictionaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers. Psal také mnoho matematických a vìdeckých èlánkù.

Jean-Baptiste d'Alembert (Paris, 1717 - idem, Filósofo e cientista francês. Abandonado pelos pais, um vidreiro recolhe-o e fá-lo estudar Matemáticas e Direito com uma pensão entregue pelo seu pai. Em 1741, com apenas vinte e quatro anos, ingressa na Academia Francesa e, a partir de 1772, é secretário perpétuo. Frequenta os principais salões literários de Paris, e muito particularmente o de Julie de Lespinasse, a quem permanece ligado toda a sua vida. Está em contacto contínuo com soberanos como Frederico II da Prússia e Catarina II da Rússia, que lhe oferecem empregos nas suas cortes, que ele recusa. A figura de D'Alembert está especialmente ligada à Enciclopédia, que dirige juntamente com Diderot até 1758. Escreve o famoso Discurso Preliminar desta obra, onde propõe uma classificação racional das ciências que reflicta os conceitos culturais da Ilustração. É, além disso, autor de diversos tratados de física (Tratado de Dinâmica), história, música e filosofia. No campo literário é notável a recompilação de ensaios Miscelânia de Literatura, História e Filosofia
