Biography Jean-le-Rond D'Alembert was born at Paris on November 16, 1717, and died there on October 29, 1783. He was the illegitimate child of the chevalier Destouches. Being abandoned by his mother on the steps of the little church of St. Jean-le-Rond, which then nestled under the great porch of Notre-Dame, he was taken to the parish commissary, who, following the usual practice in such cases, gave him the Christian name of Jean-le-Rond; I do not know by what authority he subsequently assumed the right to prefix de to his name. He was boarded out by the parish with the wife of a glazier in a small way of business who lived near the cathedral, and here he found a real home, though a humble one. His father appears to have looked after him, and paid for his going to a school where he obtained a fair mathematical education.
An essay written by him in 1738 on the integral calculus, and another in 1740 on ``ducks and drakes'' or ricochets, attracted some attention, and in the same year he was elected a member of the French Academy; this was probably due to the influence of his father, It is to his credit that he absolutely refused to leave his adopted mother, with whom he continued to live until her death in 1757. It cannot be said that she sympathised with his success, for at the height of his fame she remonstrated with him for wasting his talents on such work: ``Vous ne serez jamais qu'un philosophe,'' said she, ``et qu'est-ce qu'un philosophe? c'est un fou que se tourmente pendant sa vie, pour qu'on parle de lui lorsqu'il n'y sera plus.''

French mathematician who was abandoned as a baby on the steps of the church of St. Jean Baptiste de Rond. When he became a famous mathematician, he spurned the overtures of his mother who wished to make him part of her family. D'Alembert was a friend of Lagrange d'Alembert published " d'Alembert's principle " in (1743), which was a powerful new interpretation of Newton's third law He also studied physical astronomy, in which he solved the precession of the equinoxes and was the first to find and solve the wave equation His solution is now known as d'Alembert's solution in his honor. d'Alembert believed that logarithms satisfied , but Euler wrote him explaining that . He tried unsuccessfully to prove the fundamental theorem of algebra (still known in France as d'Alembert's theorem). He discovered the Cauchy-Riemann equations in 1752 (decades prior to Cauchy or Riemann ). He also advocated the use of a limiting procedure in calculus With Diderot , he composed the monumental 28 volume encyclopedia of which d'Alembert wrote most of the mathematical and scientific articles.

Jean Le Rond d'Alembert: Preliminary Discourse to the Encyclopedia of Diderot
Why have people come to despise the mechanical arts? What is their main advantage over the liberal arts (that is, more intellectual arts)? The mechanical arts depend on manual operation and are enslaved, if I may be permitted the term, to a species of routine, and so are left to those men whom prejudice places within the lowest classes. Poverty has driven these men to apply themselves to such work more often than taste or native genius drew them towards it, and for this reason these arts have come to be despised, so much does poverty darken what accompanies it. On the other hand, the free operations of the intellect (1) The contempt shown to the mechanical arts seems to have been influenced in part by their inventors. The names of these great benefactors of the human race are almost entirely unknown, whereas the history of its destroyers, that is to say, its conquerors, is known by everyone. Even so, it is perhaps among the artisans that one should go to find the most admirable proofs of the sagacity, the patience, and the resources of the intellect. I admit that the greater part of the arts have been invented little by little and that it has taken a very long period of centuries in order to bring watches, for example, to the point of perfection that we see. But is it not the same for the sciences?

d'Alembert, Jean le Rond
French philosopher, mathematician, and encyclopedist d'Alembert was a foundling , discovered near the church of St. Jean-le-Rond in Paris (hence his name), but he was in fact the son of Madame de Tencin and General Destouches-Canon. His father soon reclaimed him, placing him for fostering with a glazier's family named Rousseau, and he continued to care about him and was responsible for him receiving an excellent education, although he never publicly revealed his identity. d'Alembert refused to be reconciled with his mother when she made overtures to him. - Select a category - All New Arrivals Adoption Books Lifebooks Scrapbooking e-books click here He became a brilliant mathematician and a member of the French Academy of Sciences. He was also a philosopher and a member of the circle surrounding Diderot. He helped write the great Encyclopédie , one of the crowning achievements of the French enlightenment. His published works run to 18 volumes. He also gave much of his income to charity.
