e was born in Kues, Germany (hence "of Cusa") to a merchant family, and received his doctorate in canon law from the University of Padua in 1423. After a successful career as a papal legate, he was made a cardinal by Pope Nicholas V in 1448 or 1449, and was named Bishop of Brixen in 1450. His work as bishop was opposed by Archduke Sigismund of Austria; the duke imprisoned Nicholas in 1460, for which Pope Pius II excommunicated Sigismund and laid an interdict on his lands. Nicholas of Cusa was never able to return to his bishopric, however: Sigmund's capitulation in 1464 came a few days after Nicholas's death at Todi in Umbria.
Nicholas of Cusa was noted for his deeply mystical writings about Christianity, particularly the nature of the Trinity. Many believe he was influenced in this by the work of Thomas a Kempis. He was suspected by some of holding pantheistic beliefs, but his writings were never accused as being heretical. Most of his mystical ideas can be found in his essays, De Docta Ignorantia (http://cla.umn.edu/jhopkins/DI-I-12-2000.pdf) (Of Learned Ignorance) and De Visio Dei (Vision of God).
Nicholas is also considered by many to be a man ahead of his time in the field of science. Though he predated Copernicus by half a century, Nicholas suggested in some of his scientific writings that the Earth was a nearly spherical shape that revolved around the Sun, and that each star is itself a distant sun. He was not, however, describing a scientifically verifiable theory of the universe: his beliefs (which proved uncannily accurate) were based almost entirely on his own personal speculations and numerological calculations. He made contributions to the field of mathematics by developing the concepts of the infinitesimal and of relative motion.

Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) was one of the most illustrious figures of the fifteenth century. Trained as a canonist, he first made his mark in political thought. Later, Nicholas became a papal envoy, a cardinal and an original speculative thinker. His ideas of learned ignorance, coincidence of opposites and enfolding / unfolding still attract attention today.
The American Cusanus Society, founded in 1983, promotes the study of Nicholas and his times. It holds sessions at the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Western Michigan University in May of each year, and it has held conferences at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and at the Catholic University of America. The Society also publishes a newsletter. It is affiliated with the Institute for Cusanus Research, University of Trier and the Japanese Cusanus Society.

A Dialogue of Cultures
by Helga Zepp LaRouche The following speech was delivered on May 6, 2001, at a conference of the Schiller Institute in Bad Schwalbach, Germany . Subheads have been added. An audio/video version is also available. It is an extraordinary joy for me to speak about my good friend, Nicolaus of Cusa. And, given the fact that it is his birthday somewhere between April and June, he will be 600 years old. And I really mean the joy of a friend having a birthday, because when a friend has a birthday, you realize that without this individual, the world would be so much poorer. And I hope that with my remarks I will interest you in studying Nicolaus of Cusa, his ideas and concepts, so that he becomes one of your dear friends, too, if he is not so already. The reason why this particular man is so extraordinarily important is, because it was his ideas which gave the beautiful, Italian Renaissance, the Golden Renaissance of Florence, an even higher expression, because he was the towering genius among all the many geniuses who came together at that point. And it was this unbelievable, fantastic explosion of human creativity expressed in this Renaissance, which succeeded in overcoming the Dark Age of the Fourteenth century. And it is more urgent than ever before, to study the example of the Golden Renaissance, to find the clues to how we can overcome the Dark Age of today.

Nicholas Krebs took the name Nicholas of Cusa (also known as Nicholas Cusanus 1401-1464) in honor of his birthplace, the small German village of Cusa on the Moselle River. He showed such high promise as a boy that at the age of twelve he received a scholarship to study with the Brothers of the Common Life at Deventer in the Lowlands, a mystical group devoted to experiencing unity with God as inspired by a widely influential book of the time, the Imitation of Christ , authored by one of their fellows. Over the next twelve years he went on to study the arts, philosophy, law, mathematics, the sciences and theology at the universities of Heidelberg, Rome, Colone and Padua, from which he received a doctorate in law. In 1433, at the age of twenty-nine, he became an ordained priest and pursued a series of ecclesiastical appointments culminating in his becoming Cardinal in 1448 and Bishop of Brixen in 1450.

Nicholas of Cusa 1401-1464 German Philosopher Nicholas of Cusa is remarkable for his modern views about science. In the 15th century, astronomy was strongly influenced by the views Aristotle and Ptolemy. These highly respected authorities held that the universe rotated around the earth and that the orbits of the heavenly bodies circles or circles within circles. Long before Copernicus proposed that the earth rotated around the sun and Kepler proposed that planets had elliptical orbits, Nicholas suggested that the motion of the universe was not centered on the earth and that celestial bodies were not necessarily circular in form or motion. Nicholas was one of the first advocates of experimental science. His careful study of plant growth, in which he showed that plants absorb nourishment from the air, is the first modern biological experiment. He wrote a book on the use of the balance and provided the first experimental evidence that air has weight. His scientific interests also included mathematics, diagnostic medicine, and applied science. Nicholas' father was a boatman on the Moselle river. Despite his humble origins, he was able to study arts, philosophy, law, mathematics, the sciences, and theology. He studied at Heidelberg and Cologne in Germany, at Deventer, in the Netherlands, and in Padua and Rome in Italy. He was ordained a priest and rose to the rank of bishop and cardinal. He served on a commission to Constantinople seeking the reunion of the Eastern and Western Christian churches.

ITALY O ne of the single most important ideas emerging from Alberti's concepts is that of the relationship between the artist's ingenuity and his natural and social surroundings, that is, the relationship between the world and the artist's representation of it. It has been noted that this concept resonates singularly with that of Nicholas of Cusa, with whom Alberti shared mutual friendships. The idea of the creativity of the artist's mind, including thoughts on his relationship to the world around him, his capacity to harmoniously reconstruct in accordance with innate proportions (the mind is the locus of proportion, Nicholas wrote) and the beauty of discordant, contradictory Nature, is clearly developed in De Mente and other works anterior to 1450, when Alberti labored over
