Meister Eckhart in Nicholas of Cusa’s 1456 sermon: "Ubi est qui natus est rex Iudeorum?
Clyde Lee Miller
Vier Predigten im Geiste Eckharts , would be a selection of Cusan sermons modeled after Eckhart’s wondrous German sermons. But Koch had other purposeshe was concerned to show that Nicholas, though not directly influenced by Eckhart before the late 1440s, was definitely reading Eckhart by the early 1450s. So he picked four sermons where Cusanus took material directly from Eckhart’s Latin treatises (not even Eckhart’s Latin sermons!). Koch’s effort was and is edifying, of course, for those tracing Nicholas’ relation to or defense of Meister Eckhart. Yet the upshot is that this sermon of 1456 is definitely not "in the spirit of" Eckhart’s German sermons, in the sense of Eckhart’s literary style. But what Nicholas says accords with the teaching Eckhart propounded in his Latin commentaries on John’s Prologue and on Genesis. Cusanus’ sermon is "secundum mentem Magistri Eckardi" in substance and often repeats his words verbatim. His further explanations and proposals are particularly interesting as he expounds the Meister in Cusan fashion. "Ubi est qui natus est rex Judeorum?" Following Eckhart’s commentary on John 1:38, Nicholas indicates (#4) that this utterance of the Magi from Matthew’s Gospel need not be taken as a question. Instead, it can be read as a statement or declaration, as if it said that the where or place of everything is God, the one born king of the Jews. Jesus is "‘where’ or ‘place’ in the absolute sense." The next ten sections of the sermon expand on and interpret this idea.

Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464)
Nikolaus Krebs. Theologian who in his De docta ignorantia endorsed the idea of other inhabited worlds: Life, as it exists on Earth, in the form of men, animals and plants, is to be found, let us suppose, in a higher form in the solar and stellar regions.... Of the inhabitants then of worlds other than our own we can know less, having no standards by which to appraise them. It may be conjectured that in the Sun there exist solar beings, bright and enlightened denizens, and by nature, more spiritual than such as may inhabit the Moon - who are possibly lunatics ... He therefore went much further than those scholastics of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, including William of Ockham , Jean Buridan , and William Vorilong , who merely asserted that it would have been possible for God to have created other worlds should he have chosen to do so. Considering the fate of another Middle Age cleric, Giordano

http://www.crvp.org/book/Series01/I-10/chapter_i.htm
CHAPTER I
THE BACKGROUND OF THE CONCEPT OF UNITY IN NICHOLAS OF CUSA
The purpose of this chapter is threefold. The first section, from various perspectives, will sketch briefly the development of the concept of unity in history from various perspectives. It will be divided into two sub-sections. The first sub-section will outline the fundamental role of the concept of unity in various world views, while the second sub-section will show that this concept remains relevant for contemporary thought. The next section will outline those ideas which played a formative role in shaping Nicholas of Cusa's idea of unity. The first sub-section will deal with the two main currents of medieval philosophy, namely, Platonism and Aristotelianism; the second sub-section will discuss some of the minor trends which contributed to Cusa's thought, and the last sub-section will deal with Cusa's personal background and how it contributed to his conception of unity. The third section will state the methodology which this work will follow.
THE CONCEPT OF UNITY
The Development of Unity
Before one can examine the ideas of Nicholas of Cusa in reference to unity one must first understand the historical context of the concept of unity, and gain appreciation for the fundamental importance of the role which unity plays in all societies. In pursuit of this goal we will begin by tracing the development of the concept of unity from totemic to mythic, to philosophic thought. We will then comment briefly upon the role unity plays in three philosophic contexts, namely Christian, Jewish, and Islamic.

PART II
A CUSAN APPROACH TO SOME CONTEMPORARY ISSUES Part II of this work will examine a number of contemporary issues in the light of Nicholas of Cusa's understanding of unity. The subtle insights he developed promise to make important contributions in helping resolve the complex problems facing our pluralistic culture. It is of course impossible to state with certainty precisely what a thinker of Cusa's complexity and originality would say regarding issues which arise several centuries after his death. What this part intends to do, however, is to draw upon his insights and make the author's own application. Cusa's ideas on unity can illumine contemporary issues and, hopefully, provide new perspectives which can contribute to their resolution.
Outline of Part II
Within each of the following chapters the role of the principles of individuality and community will be examined. These chapters will discuss how the inherent interrelation between these two principles creates a vision of unity consistent with both diversity and dynamism, the distinctive elements which must be articulated by any truly Cusan interpretation of unity. For Cusa the term dynamism refers not merely to action but to interaction. The difference between these concepts would be analogous to the difference between a single actor performance and a play with a more conventional cast. In the first case one is free to perform without regard to anyone else. In the latter one must be aware of the rest of the cast and engage with them in the performance.

Nicolaus Cusanus was born in the year of the Lord's incarnation 1401, in the German city of Kues, to a "middle-class" boatman and vineyard owner. As a young man Nicholas was influenced by the "Modern Piety" devotio moderna , a reform movement that had begun in the late fourteenth century and spread throughout Germany and parts of France and Italy. Stressing such things as the "simple" Christian life which it thought had been lost after an ancient "Golden Age" of the primitive Church ( ecclesia primitiva ), the importance of not merely relying upon external aids to salvation (such as the Church and her sacramental system) but of focusing more on an "interior" spiritual life, a conviction that the mysteries of Christianity were available not merely to intellectuals but to common people as well, and intense emotions regarding the suffering of Christ and one's relationship with him, the devotio moderna had significant connections to the outlook of St. Augustine, Bernard of Clairvaux , and Thomas a Kempis, and was a major impulse in the founding of the influential Brethren of the Common Life
From the age of 16, Nicholas studied at the University of Heidelberg, and took his doctorate in canon law (
