Lodi (Italy), August 11, 1464] Nicholas of Cusa studied at both Heidelberg and Padua, where he earned a law degree in 1423, but in 1430 he entered the church, becoming a cardinal in 1448. His ideas about the universe were generally ahead of their time, including modern views on astronomy, botany, and medicine but they were seldom backed with experiment or other proof. His invention of concave lenses for nearsightedness was an important advance. Dictionary Nicholas of Cu·sa kyū zə, -sə

Tyrone Lai Nicholas of Cusa and the Finite Universe Abstract A number of authorsfrom Kepler to Koyrehave held the view that the universe as Nicholas of Cusa thinks of it is infinite. Recent authors, however, are careful to point out that it is not clear in what sense Cusanus thinks of the universe as infinite. It is shown in this paper that Cusanus thinks of the universe as infinite only in the sense that God has the power of creating a universe greater than the present one, but the present universe is finite, and according to Nicholas of Cusa necessarily so, even though beyond the universe there is nothing else, that is, nothing material. If Cusanus was instrumental in re-introducing the idea of an infinite universe (as later authors understood it), it would seem it was not what he intended. Full text available from author by email

Nicholas of Cusa
Here's another pre-Reformation figure whom I believe we Protestants really need to appreciate: Nicholas of Cusa . In the prime of his work only 50 or so years before Luther was born, Cusa was an immensely influential figure who sought a "catholic concordance" (the title of one of his most important works) even when it led him to conclusions that we ourselves would not be happy with today. He shows us by his example why the conflicts that led to the Protestant Reformation were far more difficultand seemingly intractablethan narrow polemical focuses only upon "big names" like Wycliffe and Huss can ever hope to convey. Nicholas of Cusa
August 11 ) was a cardinal of the Catholic Church , a philosopher , a mathematician , and an astronomer . He was born Nikolaus Krebs in Kues Germany (latinized as "Cusa") to a merchant family, and received his doctorate in canon law from the University of Padua in 1423. After a successful career as a papal legate , he was made a cardinal by Pope Nicholas V in 1448 or 1449, and was named Bishop of Brixen in 1450. His work as bishop was opposed by Archduke Sigismund of Austria ; the duke imprisoned Nicholas in 1460, for which Pope Pius II excommunicated Sigismund and laid an interdict Todi in Umbria
Nicholas of Cusa was noted for his deeply mystical writings about Christianity , particularly the nature of the Trinity . Many believe he was influenced in this by the work of Thomas a Kempis . He was suspected by some of holding pantheistic beliefs, but his writings were never accused as being heretical . Most of his mystical ideas can be found in his essays, De Docta Ignorantia (Of Learned Ignorance) and De Visione Dei (Vision of God).

Today Aosta belongs to Italy, specifically to the region of Val d'Aosta. Anselm later became prior (1063), and then abbot (1078), of the Monastery of Bec-Hellouin in Normandy, France.
