  • Public Orator, Dr David Green and Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Wallace, presented the award to Professor Crighton in Cambridge as he was unable to attend the Degree Congregation on afternoon of Tuesday 8 July 1999.
In 1940 the eminent but eccentric Cambridge mathematician G H Hardy wrote: "the ‘real’ mathematics of the ‘real’ mathematicians … is almost wholly useless." Lest many of our new graduates tear up their certificates and their parents demand their money back we hasten to add that this is not Professor David George Crighton is one of those great applied mathematicians who have contributed to the ongoing technological revolution. He is distinguished for his work on sound waves, developing the mathematics which describes the way they are generated and propagate in gases, liquids and solids. In particular he has extended our understanding of waves generated by large-scale turbulence and the propagation of shock waves, findings particularly important to the aircraft industry. Professor Crighton's scientific interests have resulted in over 120 published papers, and he has given around 450 papers and talks at conferences, seminars etc. and has supervised 25 Ph.D. students to completion with another half-dozen in progress.

Professor David Crighton, head of the department of applied mathematics and theoretical physics (DAMTP) at Cambridge University, and master of Jesus College, who has died of cancer aged 57, was for the last decade the undisputed leader of the applied mathematics community in Britain. He was a major figure in the theory of aeroacoustics (aircraft and engine noise and how to control it), linear and nonlinear waves, and structural vibrations; he pioneered research council initiatives for the funding of research in applied nonlinear mathematics; he was instrumental in bringing together all the mathematical organisations in the country so that they could speak with one voice; he initiated a campaign with mathematical educationalists to improve the image of mathematics in schools (the highlight was the "Pop Maths Roadshow"); and he led his department and college with immense energy and vision.

    Obituary: David Crighton
    By John Brindley
It is with the greatest sadness and sense of personal loss that we record the untimely death of David Crighton, at the age of 57, on April 12th. David's contributions to the development of "nonlinear mathematics", and especially of its ubiquitous importance in modern applied mathematics, where, in many situations the essential qualitative character of system behaviour is nonlinear, and not amenable to linear approximations.. His energy and perception led a group of us in Leeds to form in 1984, a Centre for Nonlinear Studies, (CNLS) of which he was properly the first Director. I had the task of succeeding him in 1986 on his departure to Cambridge, but by then the foundations had been laid and momentum generated. David's pressure within the then SERC was important in securing the Nonlinear Science (NLS) Initiative in the next 5 years, and even more so in securing its successor, Applied Nonlinear Mathematics (ANM), whose Scientific Committee I had the privilege of chairing from 1993-96.

Conference of Heads of Departments of Mathematical Sciences
Minutes of the Committee Meeting held at UCL on 18th May 1995, commencing at 11.30am.
Present: Allan Norcliffe (Sheffield Hallam) in the Chair, Mike Atkinson (St Andrews), David Bartholomew (RSS), Ken Brown (LMS), Martin Everett (Greenwich), Ekkehard Kopp (Hull), David Larman (UCL), Adrian Lepper (IMA), Allan Ryley (Glamorgan), Graham Wilks (Keele). 1. Membership and Apologies: Mike Atkinson, David Bartholomew and Ken Brown were welcomed to their first meeting of the Committee. Apologies for absence had been received from Mike Crampin, David Crighton and Donald Davison, all of whom had engagements i n their home institutions. 2. The minutes of the meeting held on 26th January 1995 were approved. 3. Matters arising form the minutes: Min 3: No action had yet been taken on the issue of advertising of courses. It was agreed to set up a HoDoMS Home Page on the World Wide Web, which could encourage member departments to use this facility in preference to commercial publishers for making courses known to prospective applicants, and to take part in promoting UK Mathematics, rather than use resources for competition. (Action: Mike Atkinson and Ekkehard Kopp) Min 5: RAE follow-up: it was reported that the mathematics panels would be chaired by Barry Johnson (Pure), David Crighton (Applied) and Mike Titterington (Statistics). The full panels should be known soon, and it was intended that clear decisions on cri teria and procedures would be communicated to the mathematical community in the early autumn. The Committee agreed that it might not be appropriate to ask any panel chairman to lead an item on this at the AGM, but that the Committee should endeavour to pr ovide any information available at the time. There might be a need for a further HoDoMS meeting in the winter to monitor preparations for the RAE in March 1996; meanwhile, we could press the concerns raised in our submission (which had received no respons e so far). (Action: Ekkehard Kopp)

It was decided to adopt a one-day format for 1998 (11am to 5pm starting with the AGM) and a two-day format for 1999. Graham would help with the preparation of the 1999 Conference, and was keen to attract top class speakers as in 1997. Action: GW 6.2 Prof Alan Zinobar volunteered Sheffield as the venue for the 1998 event and would investigate the availability of accommodation. Action: AZ 6.3 David Brannan would check possible dates, and the preferred date circulated tothe membership as soon as possible. Action: DB, KH 6.4 Topics would be drawn from the MMath degree, shifts in the contents of mathematics degrees, the Dearing and Government White Paper, benchmarking of UG programmes (ie level descriptors) and possibly TQA. 7. DEARING REPORT AND REPRESENTATIONS TO DfEE The possibility of a submission targeted at the forthcoming Government White Paper was discussed. It was decided to wait for publication, but we should be alert to topics that could emerge such as numeracy, benchmarking, the MMath, intermediate qualifications, the role of the external examiner, IT in teaching and learning, the structure of funding for mathematics, teaching-only contracts, and service teaching on sub-degree courses. 8. LETTER FROM GARTH DALES ON SUBJECT LEVEL DESCRIPTORS The Chairman said he would enquire further and bring this matter up at the next meeting. 9. WHITE PAPER `THE PEOPLE'S LOTTERY' AND SUPPORT FOR TEACHERS Attention was drawn to the entry on the World Wide Web (www.culture.gov.uk) giving the text of the Government White Paper on the People's Lottery which suggested an endowment for Science and the Arts (NESTA). Members were asked to contact David Brannan to help formulate a response by 10 October. 10. MATHSKILLS PROJECT Ekkehard Kopp was away at the time of the meeting but would send a progress report as soon as he could. 11. ANY OTHER BUSINESS 11.1 It was agreed to offer £1000 to the group headed by Douglas Quinnery at Keele to help pump-prime the development of diagnostic testing via a web site. 11.2 Promotional video: Dr Lucas at the University of Abertay Dundee had written enquiring about the promotional video produced by a consortium of polytechnics some years ago be updated. Graham Wilks would take this up. David Brannan also drew attention to a video made by him recently. Suggestions were tentatively put forward about developing a CD-ROM. 11.3 It was agreed that the membership subscription would remain at £100. Prof Martin Everett would send out requests shortly. 11.4 Promotional activities: Graham Wilks drew attention to the Pupil Researcher Initiative sponsored by EPSRC: there were no maths specialists as candidates. Also he suggested that the mathematics community supported initiatives such as SET more vigorously. 11.5 Teaching and Learning: Graham Wilks also wondered whether the companies that produced software such as MATHEMATICA, for example, could be persuaded to fund educational initiatives that promote good practice, such as a prize fund for projects or courses for heads of department. This would be brought up as an agenda item at the next meeting and in the meantime Graham would circulate an explanatory e-mail. Action: KH, GW 12. NEXT MEETING The next meeting would be on Monday, 12 January 1998 at UCL Prof Chris Wright, Secretary

Reply #1 on: I have checked my maps but could find nothing to match but checking online brought the following reference Quote Thus the name Pitkethly is derived from the place name Pitkeathly, or Pitcaithly as it is sometimes pronounced, which might formerly have been known as Petcathelin. The name probably means a "A piece of land belonging to Cathach / a warrior" or "A piece of land associated with a fight/battle". "Pitkeathly" Wells can still be seen on some old Ordnance survey maps of the area to the East of Perth

    Professor David Crighton
    Wednesday 9th October 1996 at 7.30 p.m.
Lecture Theatre W1.12, James Went Building, City Site, De Montfort University, Leicester
Professor Crighton will explain how applied mathematics research holds the key for future developments in engineering. The applied mathematical modelling skills will be presented with applications in the physical sciences and technology to show how these approaches give results of information not otherwise available.
