DAVID CRIGHTON, Master of Jesus College, Cambridge, since 1997 and Professor of Applied Mathematics at Cambridge University since 1986, was probably the most respected head of any Mathematics department in Britain. He was a superb mathematical researcher, an excellent academic administrator and a very good friend. There was something that sparkled in Crighton's behaviour and the unexpected things about him provided as much fun as the sheer brilliance of his research did satisfaction. The boyish enthusiasm, brilliance and charm evident in my first meeting with him never vanished. If they sometimes left the surface, they were never far beneath. Crighton had a lot of dark wavy hair and he carried a huge, almost spherical crash helmet for commuting on his scooter. It is hard to think why this image of him was so memorable, but it was.

David Crighton was the son of George Wolfe Johnson Crighton and Violet Grace Garrison. He was born in Llandudno, Wales because, due to the bombing of London during World War II, his mother had been sent there so that her child might be born in safety. His secondary education was at Watford Grammar School, but there his first interests were not in mathematics but in classics. Only in his final two years at secondary school did he became interested in mathematics and this was brought about by one of the masters at Watford Grammar School who said:- ... whatever else, he will never be any good at mathematics. Crighton related later in his life that it was this challenge which made him change from his intended career in classics, and switch to mathematics and physics for his main school subjects over his final two years at secondary school. After completing his studies at Watford Grammar School, Crighton entered St John's College, Cambridge, in 1961. However he only completed the first two parts of the Mathematical Tripos for, despite obtaining a First in both parts, he preferred to end his education in 1964 with a BA and to take a lecturing position at Woolwich Polytechnic. We should note that Woolwich Polytechnic has since then became the University of Greenwich, but at the time Crighton joined it, it did not have university status. Pedley writes in [2]:-

Eulogy for David George Crighton
Delivered at the Funeral on 20 April 2000 in Jesus College Chapel
As evidenced by your presence here today and the many hundreds of heart-felt messages already received, David was a deeply loved, greatly admired, remarkable individual - a man of enormous energy and warmth, whose flame burnt brightly until just days before the end of his life. Two themes predominated throughout David's fifty-seven years work and fun; he enjoyed life in all its aspects. And he was happy working; especially when working to help and encourage others. These themes were already evident as an undergraduate at St Johns where friends remember that, with his long jet-black hair, he enjoyed going to the pub, playing darts and bar billiards and was occasionally seen jitterbugging with complete abandon. He played chess for St Johns, cycled for fun - often cycling to and from Watford at the beginning and end of terms, while his contemporaries were driven in their parents' cars. Even then, he was known as a hard worker. I believe that David was not a workaholic, but throughout his life he was a workaphile, who actively enjoyed using his quick and resourceful mind to accomplish an enormous amount, and at the highest standard. Living well, for David, included dressing well. He already dressed nattily as an undergraduate when he had a reputation for sporting the longest, sharp-toed winkle-picker shoes in Cambridge. He claimed that he did his best work when adorned with a tie, and it was frequently a college tie. He had tremendous affection for Jesus College and was extremely proud to be the Master.

IMA-LMS David Crighton Award
The David Crighton Medal award was instituted in 2002 by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) and the London Mathematical Society (LMS) in memory of Professor David George Crighton FRS. The Award is made triennially by the Councils of the Institute and the Society, with the first award in 2003. The silver gilt medal is awarded to a mathematician who is normally resident in the mathematical community represented by the two organisations for services both to mathematics and to the mathematical community. David Crighton Medal
Call for Nominations for David Crighton Medal 2003 In order to pay tribute to the memory of Professor David George Crighton FRS., the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and the London Mathematical Society have resolved to institute jointly an award. The silver gilt medal will be awarded to an eminent mathematician for services both to mathematics and to the mathematical community, who is normally resident in the mathematical community represented by the two organisations on the 1st January of the year of the award. The award will be considered triennially by the Councils of the Institute and the Society, with the first medal being awarded in 2003. The medal-winner will normally be presented with the award at a joint meeting of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and the London Mathematical Society, and will be invited to give a lecture. A David Crighton Medal Committee is being established, comprising three members from the LMS and three from the IMA. The Society’s representatives will be Peter Goddard, Tony Scholl and Marcus Du Sautoy. The Institute members are Professor John McWhirter (IMA President), Professor Tim Pedley and Professor Steve Reid. Members of the Society or Institute are invited to submit their views confidentially in writing to members of the Committee by 1 February 2003. LMS Members:

David Crighton Medal 2003
Warm congratulations to John Ball, who is to be the recipient of the first David Crighton Medal, awarded by the LMS and the IMA.
Citation
The David Crighton Medal for 2003 for services to Mathematics and to the mathematics community is awarded to Professor John Ball, F.R.S., Sedleian Professor of Natural Philosophy in the University of Oxford (currently on sabbatical leave at Princeton University, USA). John Ball is an outstanding mathematician of international standing. At the same time he has exerted himself both nationally and internationally for the good of Mathematics and its community. In particular, his activity internationally has done much to raise the profile of UK Mathematics, especially of Applied Mathematics. He has an exceptional record of getting things done and making things happen - in this he demonstrates the qualities of David Crighton himself. Nationally, he was very effective in pressing for and establishing an Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Scotland; it was very much due to his efforts that the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences was set up in Edinburgh more than 10 years ago. Over the years it has been, and remains, an important national asset and one whose programmes are complementary to those of the Isaac Newton Institute.
