He was head of the department of applied mathematics and theoretical physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge for nine years and master of Jesus College, Cambridge for three years. Crighton was born on 15 November 1942 in Llandudno, North Wales, to which his parents had been evacuated in World War II to avoid German bombing. Christened David (but not Lloyd!) George, and claiming no Welsh ancestry, he captained his school at rugby and won a mathematics scholarship to Cambridge. He graduated as a top student in 1964. In his first position, as a lecturer at Woolwich Polytechnic, Crighton taught mathematics to mature students in night school, where, he claimed, he mastered the elements of crowd control. But, having reached the top of that career path by the age of 24, he switched his sights to research. In 1967, he joined my group in the mathematics department of Imperial College as a research assistant.

Obituary
David G. Crighton
Then, by chance, he met John Ffowcs Williams, a reader in mathematics at Imperial College and an expert in aeroacoustics, and became his research assistant (at less than a quarter of the salary of a senior lecturer at Woolwich Polytechnic). His PhD at Imperial College followed in 1969; he remained there until 1974, when he was appointed a research associate in the Department of Engineering at Cambridge. He visited the department only once, however, as he was immediately-apparently out of the blue though in fact at the instigation of Sir James Lighthill-appointed professor of applied mathematics at the University of Leeds at the age of 32. David immediately made a difference, motivating his colleagues, many of them older than himself, to become active in research, to raise research funds, and to take on students. He himself had 15 research students in his time at Leeds. When he had been there only about a year, a new research student asked if they could fix a time for a regular weekly meeting. David looked at his diary and said "How about Monday at 7 o'clock?" The student asked "a.m. or p.m.?" to which the reply was "Whichever you prefer." By 1986, when David left, the applied mathematics department at Leeds had risen to be one of the top three or four in the country, a position it retains to this day. David's spells as head of department, chairman of the School of Mathematics, and chairman of the Science Board (effectively dean) left indelible marks of his imagination, energy, and effectiveness.

David George Crighton
On 12th April 2000, to the intense distress of all who knew him, Professor David Crighton, who in the relatively brief period since his admission as Master in 1997 had gained the deep respect and devoted admiration of all in the College for his wise and calm leadership, his humour, humanity and approachability, his committed support for the academic and musical life of the College and his astonishing courage in the face of adversity, lost a heroic battle against cancer, which had been diagnosed early the previous year. He was only 57. The funeral of the Master took place in the College Chapel on 20th April. The vast congregation (many of whom were unable to find seats, and had to stand in the transepts or at the back of the Chapel) included not only the Vice-Chancellor, many heads of Colleges and other dignitaries but also a remarkable number of old and current members of the College, including many students who had returned to Cambridge specially for the service, and of the College staff. The eulogy was delivered by Prof. Herbert Huppert. At the end of the service, in accordance with the custom when a Master of the College dies, Professor Crighton's coffin was carried through the courts of the College to the entrance of Chapel Court, followed by his family, by the Fellows of the College and their spouses, and by other members of the congregation.

D. G. Crighton
David Crighton, Editor of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, having been an Associate Editor since 1979, died on 12 April 2000. After completing the Mathematics Tripos at Cambridge University, David was for two years a lecturer at Woolwich Polytechnic, before becoming a research assistant and taking a doctoral degree at Imperial College, London. In 1974, at the prodigiously young age of 32, he became Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Leeds, and then moved back to Cambridge in 1986 to fill the chair vacated on the retirement of George Batchelor. From 1991 he was head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, and in 1997 he was also elected Master of Jesus College, Cambridge. The quality of David's scientific work earned him many honours, including election as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1993. He was loved and admired worldwide for his warmth and humanity and for his extraordinary energy and vision. His wise leadership and guidance of JFM will be greatly missed. David fought courageously against cancer for more than a year, throughout which he was supported by his wife Johanna and by his two children. He was still enthusiastically involved with all his academic and administrative responsibilities until a few days befire his death.
