In August of 1988 a workshop was initiated and organized by Bengt Johansson and Otto B. Bekken at Kristiansand, Norway to "present, discuss and develop concrete ideas from the history of mathematics
which can be used to motivate, to illustrate and to enhance the understanding
of some key concepts and methods from the mathematics curriculum".
The book " Learn from the masters ! " based on this workshop was published by Mathematical Association of America in 1995 with Editors : John Fauvel, Victor Katz, Frank Swetz & the organizers. (ISBN 0-88385-703-0). The book’s title comes from a note scribbled in one of Niels Henrik Abel’s notebooks: "It appears to me that if one wants to make progress in mathematics
one should study the masters and not their pupils"

As a tribute to John Fauvel’s work, it is now time to plan a new workshop during the Abel Bicentennial Year 2002 . Our dates are 12. -15. June – shortly after the Abel bicentennial conference in Oslo. As a working title we have called the workshop "Study the Masters !"
The organizers will be Director Bengt Johansson of the Swedish National Centre for Mathematics Education at Gotenburg University, Professor Sten Kaijser of the Swedish Research School in Mathematics Education, Uppsala University, and myself, Otto B. Bekken, member of the Nordic Contact Committee for ICME 10 in Copenhagen 2004.

Springer-Verlag, 2000, x + 580 pp., $44.95. ISBN 3-540-66834-9. Reviewed by O. A. Laudal Niels Henrik Abel died on April 5th, 1829, at the age of 26, at the home of a rich industrialist not far from his father's and grandfather's parish Gjerstad. On his deathbed, wracked by tuberculosis, he seems to have cursed his fate. He would never be a Herr Professor mit seiner Gehmahlin as he had promised his fiancee. He would never reach the harbor of peace and financial tranquility that he had dreamt about. But he had already fulfilled the vision of the Danish professor Ferdinand Degen, who had suggested in 1821 that the study of elliptic integrals might enable him to "discover, like Magellan, passages into great regions of a single gigantic analytic ocean".

Stern's paper was not hard to find. Moritz Abraham Stern (my earlier spelling Moriz was erroneous) was a prominent figure in the mathematical world of his day, a colleague of Carl Friedrich Gauss who succeeded Gauss as Ordinary Professor of Mathematics at the University of Göttingen. According to Peter Pulzer, Stern was "the first Jew to be appointed to a full professorship at a German university without first converting to Christianity." Stern's paper appeared in the , also known as Crelle's Journal , after its first editor, August Leopold Crelle. When the journal was founded in 1826, its title reflected the growing division in mathematics between

Abel's Proof: An Essay on the Sources and Meaning of Mathematical Unsolvability . Peter Pesic. viii + 213 pp. The MIT Press, 2003. $24.95. Capturing the essence of a problem with a symbolic equation and then solving that equation is an extremely powerful process. One indication of its power is that it has become the dominant way of thinking about mathematical problems. Algebra, for many years considered inferior to her older sister Geometry, has almost completely taken over the mathematical terrain. The story of equations really begins with the algebraists of medieval Islam. Algebraic equations take the form
