Died: Oct. 6, 1855 Berlin mathematician and engineer who advanced the work and careers of many young mathematicians of his day and founded the Journal fŸr die reine und angewandte Mathematik ("Journal for Pure and Applied Mathematics"), now known as Crelle's Journal A civil engineer in the service of the Prussian government until 1828, he worked on the planning and construction of roads and the first railroad (completed 1838) in Germany. Crelle was more interested in educational matters, however, and in 1828 he left government service to work with the Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs and Public Education. He published a large number of textbooks, and his multiplication tables have been widely used and reprinted many times. His greatest contribution to mathematics was the founding of Crelle's Journal in 1826. The eminent mathematicians Niels Abel of Norway and Jakob Steiner of Switzerland encouraged Crelle in this venture and were the chief contributors to the first volumes. Though Crelle was not a first-rank mathematician, he had a sure instinct for recognizing genius. Without his generous support and encouragement, some of Abel's greatest work might never have been completed and published. : Encyclopaedia Britannica 2000

Born: Aug. 5, 1802, island of Finnoy, near Stavanger, Nor.
Died: April 6, 1829, Froland Norwegian mathematician, a pioneer in the development of several branches of modern mathematics. Abel was the son of a poor Protestant minister. Soon after Abel was born, his family moved to the parish of Gjerstad, near the town of Risor (southeast Norway), where the boy grew up. In 1815, when he entered the cathedral school in Oslo, his mathematical talent was recognized by a teacher who introduced him to the classics in mathematical literature and proposed original problems for solution. Thoroughly challenged, Abel studied the works of the 17th-century English mathematician and physicist Isaac Newton and the contemporary mathematicians Leonhard Euler (German), Joseph-Louis Lagrange (French), and Carl Friedrich Gauss (German) and learned to detect gaps in their mathematical reasoning. Although when Abel's father died in 1820 the family was left in straitened circumstances, the boy was able to enter the University of Christiania (Oslo) in 1821 because his teacher contributed and raised funds. He obtained a preliminary degree from the university in 1822 and continued his studies independently with further subsidies obtained by his teacher. His first papers, published in 1823 in the new periodical

    The great journey abroad
Berlin, Heinrich Hintze, 1829 In Berlin he met the mathematically interested engineer, August Leopold Crelle (1780-1855), who found the courage after his meeting with Abel to pursue a goal that he had long wanted to achieve, namely to publish a mathematical journal in Berlin that could compete with the well-established journals in France. By the beginning of 1826, the first issue of Abel remained in Berlin for four months, and he had an inspiring time there together with Crelle and his circle of mathematicians. August Leopold Crelle The first work that Abel published in was an expanded version of the proof that the general fifth degree equation was not solvable by the extraction of roots. With acuity and virtuosity, he showed that a possible solution would have to possess properties that no radical can have. Many special equations of a higher degree than the fifth have solutions, and in his ongoing work on equation theory, Abel went a long way toward finding acceptable solutions to these equations. The first year of Abel was accompanied on his travels by other young Norwegian scientists, most of whom were studying mineralogy and geology. For these young scientists, the most interesting study areas were in the south of Germany, in Austria, in Switzerland and in the north of Italy. Abel, who complained in many of his letters of how melancholy he could become when he was alone, followed his friends southward in Europe. He did not get to Paris until July 1826, ten months after he had left Christiania. He reported, "At last, I have arrived at the focal point of all of my mathematical hopes," and he explained the long detour as follows, "My desire to see some of Europe was great, and should we confine our travels solely to the study of the strictly scientific?"
