Gabriel Cramer 's father was Jean Isaac Cramer, who was a medical doctor in Geneva, while his mother was Anne Mallet. Jean and Anne had three sons who all went on to academic success. Besides Gabriel, their other two sons were Jean-Antione who followed his father's profession and Jean who became a professor of law. The scheme the magistrates proposed was to split the chair of philosophy into two chairs, one chair of philosophy and one chair of mathematics. De la Rive was offered the philosophy chair, which after all was what he had applied for in the first place, while Cramer and Calandrini were offered the mathematics chair on the understanding that they shared the duties and shared the salary. The magistrates put another condition on the appointment too, namely that Cramer and Calandrini each spend two or three years travelling and while one was away the other would take on the full list of duties and the full salary. It was a good plan for not only did it successfully attract all three men to the Academy, but it also gave Cramer the opportunity to travel and meet mathematicians around Europe and he was to take full advantage of this which both benefited him and the Academy. Cramer and Calandrini divided up the mathematics courses each would teach. Cramer taught geometry and mechanics while Calandrini taught algebra and astronomy. The two had been paired in the arrangement and their friends joking called them Castor and Pollux. Had their personalities been different the arrangement might have presented all sorts of difficulties, but given their natures things worked out remarkably well. Cramer is said to have been [1]:-

Cramer, Gabriel (1704-1752)

Swiss mathematician whose most important contributions stemmed from his work as an editor and disseminator of the mathematical ideas of others. He also published (1750), which was a classification of algebraic curves. Cramer's rule appeared in the appendix, but had been known previously to Maclaurin Maclaurin

Cramer, Gabriel
Swiss mathematician who introduced Cramer's rule 1750, a method for the solution of linear equations which revived interest in the use of determinants; Cramer's paradox; and the concept of utility in mathematics.
Cramer travelled in Europe and met leading mathematicians.
Cramer's paradox revolves around a theorem formulated by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who stated that two different cubic curves intersect at nine points.
Cramer pointed out that the definition of a cubic curve - a single curve - is that it is determined itself by nine points.
Cramer's concept of utility now provides a connection between the theory of probability and mathematical economics.

Biography Gabriel Cramer, born at Geneva in 1704, and died at Bagnols in 1752, was professor at Geneva. The work by which he is best known is his treatise on algebraic curves published in 1750, which, as far as it goes, is fairly complete; it contains the earliest demonstration that a curve of the nth degree is in general determined if 1/2n(n+3) points on it be given. This work is still sometimes read. Besides this, he edited the works of the two elder Bernoullis; and wrote on the physical cause of the spheroidal shape of the planets and the motion of their apses, 1730, and on Newton's treatment of cubic curves, 1746.

Cramer'in bu kitabı, analitik geometri alanında yazılan ilk kitaplardan biridir.

Cramer's Rule
Cramers rule is a formula for solving systems of equations by determinants.  Cramer's rule states that the solutions for ax + cy=e and bx+dy=f are given by the determinant solutions     Here you can find a proof of this theorem by the method of vector cross products (alternative products) . The link above also has a java script applet that may help you to visualize the vector solution.
One unusual curve on which he worked is called the Devil's curve.  The formula, in cartesian form is given by  .  The curve is shown in the picture below which is from the University of St Andrews, Scotland webpage on the history of mathematics.  A click on the image will take you to their brief biography of Gabriel Cramer.
