Collections of the Month March 2003: Iraq
The land between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers was once known as Mesopotamia, much of which is now modern-day Iraq. There, in the 4th millennium BC, the Sumerians developed what was probably the earliest urban civilization. Mesopotamia formed part of Turkey's Ottoman Empire for three centuries until World War I. British forces invaded in 1914, and Iraq was created in 1921 as a kingdom under British Mandate. Iraq was given independence in 1932, but Britain intervened during World War II to overthrow a pro-Nazi nationalist leader who had taken power. A republic was established in 1958, and this has been governed by a succession of military regimes. Iraq has a population of around 24 million. About 20 per cent are Kurds, who see themselves as a separate nation. Other smaller groups include Persians, Turkmens, Assyrians, Sabaeans, and the "Marsh Arabs".

Hardy Players Productions: Checklist Between 1908 and 1924, the Dorchester Debating and Dramatic Society performed a series of stage adaptations of Hardy's work. The core group of actors, all enthusiastic amateurs drawn primarily from the local middle-class business and professional commmunity, became known as the Hardy Players, their annual productions as the Hardy Plays, a somewhat ambiguous designation that generated considerable journalistic confusion about actual authorship. The plays received the active support and patronage of Hardy himself, with differing degrees of involvement from production to production depending on his own varying interests and circumstances. The adaptations were of three kinds. The first and largest group ( The Trumpet-Major Far From the Madding Crowd The Mellstock Quire The Distracted Preacher , and The Woodlanders ) comprised those made by Alfred Herbert Evans, a Dorchester chemist and initial producer of the plays. The second group (comprising only The Return of the Native and A Desperate Remedy ) was prepared by Evans' successor as producer, Thomas Henry Tilley, a builder and monumental mason who, like his father before him, became Mayor of Dorchester, thereby providing the Players with inevitable publicity about their association not only with Hardy himself but with a real-life "Mayor of Casterbridge." The third and most important group (

"What’s past is prologue," wrote Shakespeare four centuries ago. One can hope that "remembrance of things past," in another of his memorable phrases, will lead to de Tocqueville’s observation in 1840 that "Democracy. . . shuts the past. . . and opens the future." —Ed.
For more on these books, click the cover picture. A scholar, writer, linguist, Arabist, mountain climber, archaeologist, photographer, explorer and founder of the Iraqi National Museum, Bell was, to use the old cliche, larger than life. The recent paperback edition of a biography by Janet Wallach, Desert Queen (Anchor Books, 1999), which is being reissued in 2005, as well as the publication of Bell's Arabian Diaries, 1913-14 (Syracuse University Press, 2001) and a new edition of her The Desert and the Sown (Cooper Square Publishers, 2001), have generated renewed interest in this remarkable woman. The Letters of Gertrude Bell , selected and edited by Lady Bell, D.B.E., London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1927). This Week's Headline
To read her copious letters from Baghdad during the 1920s is like scanning this week's headlines: many of the issues she confronted are the same ones the U.S. administrators and the new Iraqi government are dealing with today.

Jeff’s Abstract Most SAS users would agree that PROC SQL if an effective tool for building applications. Combining PROC SQL with the macro language interface increases the functionality of PROC SQL and allows us to build more robust and efficient applications. This paper presents several utility applications demonstrating how PROC SQL can be used in combination with the macro language to create applications that are both more efficient and more dynamic.

Gertrude Mary Cox After graduating from high school in 1918, Cox initially worked to become a Deaconess in the Methodist Church. By 1925 however she decided to attend Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) where she earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree in statistics. She continued her studies for two years at the University of California in Berkeley, then returned to Iowa State to work on the design of experiments in the statistical laboratory. She was appointed an Associate Professor of Statistics in 1939, In 1940 Cox was named the founding Professor of Statistics at North Carolina State University. Not only did she found the department at North Carolina State University, she was the first woman to receive a professional appointment at the University. She was also the founding editor of Biometics , the journal of the International Biometric Society. Cox was instrumental in founding the Research Triangle Institute in North Carolina. The Research Triangle is today widely recognized as a major research center and an engine for economic and technology development. Cox authored, with William Cochran, a now classic tex on experimental design. She served as president of the American Statistical Association, the International Biometric Society and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1975. She was also a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, the American Statistical Society and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.

http://www.gerty.ncl.ac.uk/letters/l1609.htm
The Letters
[30 January 1924]
[30 January 1924] Baghdad. Jan. 30 Dearest Father. I've somehow mislaid you last letter and Mother's last letter - they arrived together and I think were dated Jan. 16 or 17. Anyway they were written in answer to my description to our Xmas shoot. I'm glad you thought it nice - and I'm equally glad you didn't publish it! or gladder. Well, we've now got all our Cabinet and upon my soul I think it's the best we have had for years. The nobility and gentry included in it are doubtless to a large extent the weak point. But I'm glad old Haldane is in and I have written to tell him so. (Sir Henry, the cynic, observes: "You'll always find Lord Haldane climbing up the right tree." This is not for publication.) And I'm glad Charles is in and I'm very glad to have Thomas for our minister, especially after his utterances at the banquet given to the Prince of Wales which we received by Reuter today. And, now let them get to work; there's plenty for them to do in Europe and Asia. Sir Henry has received from Mr Thomas a copy of the round robin addressed to all who come under the C.O. expressing his good will towards Sir Henry's government and the territories administered by him. It's the usual formula but it doesn't apply to a mandated country with an independent native Govt. and we got some innocent fun out of it.
