Gertrude Cox studied at Perry High School in Perry, Iowa, graduating in 1918. At this time she decided to become a deaconess in the Methodist Church and worked towards that end. However, in 1925, she decided to continue her education at Iowa State College in Ames where she studied mathematics and statistics and was awarded a B.S. in 1929 and a Master's degree in statistics in 1931. From 1931 to 1933 Cox undertook graduate studies in statistics at the University of California at Berkeley, then returned to Iowa State College as assistant in the Statistical Laboratory. Here she worked on the design of experiments. In 1939 she was appointed assistant professor of statistics at Iowa State. In 1940 Cox was appointed professor of statistics at North Carolina State University at Raleigh. There she headed the new department of Experimental Statistics. In 1945 she became director of the Institute of Statistics of the Consolidated University of North Carolina, and the Statistics Research Division of the North Carolina State College which was run by

    Gertrude Bell
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Gertrude Margaret Lowthian Bell July 14 July 12 ) was a British woman who had a major hand in creating the modern state of Iraq . During her life she was an unrecognised force behind the Arab revolt in World War I - for which Lawrence of Arabia received most of the credit - and at the conclusion of the war she drew up the borders of the former Mesopotamia to include the three vilayets which became Iraq. Bell was born in Washington Hall County Durham England to a family of great affluence. She was a granddaughter of industrialist Isaac Lowthian Bell . At the age of 16, she went up to Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford , where she gained a first class honours degree in history in only two years. Bell travelled to Iran in May . She then spent much of her time traveling around the world, mountaineering in Switzerland , and learning archaeology and languages - Arabic, French, German, Italian

Lohr receives Gertrude M. Cox award for survey research
Professor Sharon Lohr, with ASU's mathematics and statistics department, has been chosen as the first recipient of the newly inaugurated Gertrude M. Cox Award. Funded by the RTI (Research Triangle Institute), the award acknowledges mid-career statisticians who are making significant contributions to statistical practice. Lohr accepted the award at the annual dinner of the Washington Statistical Society June 10. Lohr says she was surprised and deeply honored to learn she had been selected for the award. "I am really thrilled that the awards committee and RTI consider my work to be having an impact on statistical practice," Lohr says. "Gertrude Cox really was one of the greatest statisticians of the last century, and was equally well known for her encouragement of students to go into the mathematical sciences. She was one of my heroes when I was a student, and she remains so today." Lohr joined ASU in 1990 as an assistant professor, and since then her primary research area has been survey sampling.
