Journal-isms will be abbreviated this week.
Fox Makes Fun of Antiwar Protesters
When 500 antiwar demonstrators staged a "die-in" during the morning rush hour near Manhattan's Rockefeller Center, home to such media giants as the CNN, NBC, and Fox networks, reports the Record of Bergen County, N.J., "the news ticker rimming Fox's headquarters on Sixth Avenue wasn't carrying war updates as the protest began. Instead, it poked fun at the demonstrators, chiding them." " 'War protester auditions here today . . . thanks for coming!' read one message. 'Who won your right to show up here today?' another questioned. 'Protesters or soldiers?' "Reached for comment Thursday afternoon, Fox spokeswoman Tracy Spector was unaware of the messages on the news ticker and said she would look into it. Spector said the network 'didn't mean to insult anyone.' "Media experts said what Fox did Thursday morning was not shocking - Fox was openly hawkish about the war long before it began. But, they said, the display - tagged with the Fox News logo — threw journalistic objectivity out the window and also ridiculed the First Amendment right to freedom of speech."

Biography of Richard Courant (1888-1972)
In 1934, Richard Courant joined the faculty of New York University Courant's published papers were in variational problems, finite difference methods, minimal surfaces, and partial differential equations. He encouraged the publication of mathematical texts and high quality monographs, one example of which is Methods of Mathematical Physics by Courant and Hilbert. He is perhaps best known for his scientific organizing and leadership talents, which culminated in the Institute named after him. K.O. Friedrichs said of his friend and long-time colleague: "One cannot appreciate Courant's scientific achievements simply by enumerating his published work. To be sure, this work was original, significant, beautiful; but it had a very particular flavor: it never stood alone; it was always connected with problems and methods of other fields of science, drawing inspiration from them and in turn inspiring them." The Undergraduate Collection
The Undergraduate Collection was a collection of classical mathematics books covering the history of mathematics, assembled by Professor Halsey L. Royden and Rebecca Lasher Wesley in the late 1980's. Professor Donald E. Knuth recommended additional books in the mathematical and computer sciences. At the time, Prof. Royden felt that all students of mathematics should become familiar with these works before they left Stanford. They are shelved in the book stacks by call number, and may sometimes be identified by a narrow (not round) bright green strip on the book's spine.

AN OPEN LETTER TO UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF EDUCATION, RICHARD RILEY
Dear Secretary Riley: In early October of 1999, the United States Department of Education endorsed ten K-12 mathematics programs by describing them as " exemplary " or " promising ." There are five programs in each category. The " exemplary " programs announced by the Department of Education are:
    Cognitive Tutor Algebra
    College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM)
    Connected Mathematics Program (CMP)
    Core-Plus Mathematics Project
    Interactive Mathematics Program (IMP)
The " promising " programs are:
    Everyday Mathematics
    MathLand
Middle-school Mathematics through Applications Project (MMAP)
    Number Power
The University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP)
These mathematics programs are listed and described on the government web site: http://www.enc.org/ed/exemplary/ The Expert Panel that made the final decisions did not include active research mathematicians. Expert Panel members originally included former NSF Assistant Director, Luther Williams, and former President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Jack Price. A list of current Expert Panel members is given at: http://www.ed.gov/offices/OERI/ORAD/KAD/expert_panel/mathmemb.html

Activities at the Geometry Center
Dick has been a participant in Center activities since its inception in 1991. He led a project on visualization of invariant sets in four dimensions during the academic year 1991-92, and he organized a workshop on invariant sets for symplectic maps in 1992. In May 1993 he was appointed to the Center faculty. He became Interim Director in February 1994 and was appointed Director in June 1994. As Director, he is responsible for the overall management of Center activities and for implementing and maintaining the supervisory, budgetary, and accounting systems necessary for the Center to carry out its mission and its programs. He works with the Board of Governors to set the scientific, technological, and educational directions for the Center.
Background
Dick has been at the University of Minnesota since 1970, when he joined the School of Mathematics as an assistant professor. He worked his way through the ranks, eventually becoming a professor in 1979. He served as department head from 1986 to 1990. His research area is dynamical systems, with particular emphasis on classical mechanics. He has held visiting positions at the Courant Institute, the University of Wisconsin, the Swiss Federal Polytechnical Institute, the Mittag-Leffler Institute, the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics in Rio de Janeiro, the Unversity of Colorado, and the University of Paris. He has been active in health care issues, serving as Chair of the University Senate Health Plan Subcommittee.

NYU Looks to Courant Institute in Search for New Provost
Like the cafes and neighborhood restaurants that populate New York City so densely, New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences owes at least some of its character and success to a much maligned New York phenomenon: small apartments. "I think of the Courant Institute as its faculty," says David McLaughlin, the institute's director for the last eight years. Much of his energy during those years has gone into supporting the faculty and maintaining the "environment of intense collaboration" that, from the days of Richard Courant, has characterized the institute-an environment enhanced by the fact that many faculty live nearby and, given the size of New York apartments, spend much of their working time in their Courant offices. McLaughlin was responding to a request from SIAM News that he comment on recent changes at the Courant Institute. Most obvious among them was the imminent end of his term as director; having conducted a national search, NYU president-designate John Sexton had just appointed McLaughlin the university's next provost. In a May 18 phone conversation, McLaughlin told SIAM News about some of the Courant activities he considers especially successful, and looked ahead to the challenges of his new position. As it turns out, the challenges might lie ahead, but the appointment was already official, having begun on May 17. Providing additional background on the story were Margaret Wright, who on January 22 became chair of the computer science department at Courant, and Marsha Berger, deputy director of the institute.

Benjamin Franklin
II. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: 1706-1790.
Next to Washington the most conspicuous and most widely useful of Americans throughout the eighteenth century was Benjamin Franklin. He was perhaps the most typical American of his time; certainly he was the most versatile man of affairs and the most picturesque in personality of all that distinguished group who helped to guide the nation in that troubled age. Through the second quarter of the century he lived the quiet life of a thrifty, sagacious man of business, at the same time taking a practical interest in matters of public moment and presenting the most original model of good citizenship that can be found. His contribution to American literature, the larger portion of which belongs to this earlier period of his career, is not great, but it is noteworthy.

From his earliest childhood, Franklin had a passion for books. So soon as he could read, he had waded through the small library a musty collection of treatises on divinity which he found on his father's shelves. With his first spending money, he bought the works of John Bunyan, in separate little volumes; and these he later sold in order to buy Richard Burton's Historical Collections , small and cheap, in forty volumes. Among his father's books, he discovered a copy of
