Testimony of Richard Courant, head of Mathematics Institute, NYU (VI. Courant 53) Richard Courant Q. How long have you known Dr. Flanders, and how well? A. I can't state it by the date. I had been in this country before. I emigrated definitely, and we came , landed in New York, in August 1934. Flanders, whom I didn't know, but who was a professor at New York University, came to the pier to greet me. Immediately afterwards we became good friends on the basis of mutual musical interests. I think we played string quartets two days afterward also. I have seen him all of the time, very regularly, as long as we were together at NYU. Then, during the war I waswhen the Los Alamos Laboratory was organized they came to me and asked for a recommendation of somebody who could conduct computing work. Very reluctantly, because we needed Flanders by that time for our work, but it was urgent, by some of the original founders of Los Alamos Laboratories, I mentioned Flanders, and he was selected. Through these years something very strange happened to me which I found a little bit funny. He came on official business to New York. He saw us, but although I was perfectly aware of what was going on, he never said, he avoided talking about his work. Once I was even consulted by the Los Alamos Laboratory on specific questions. I was willing to stop there on my way to the West Coast, where I had some business. I remember that Flanders asked me not to come to Los Alamos, but to stay in a hotel VI. Courant 54

Mathematics as an expression of the human mind reflects the active will, the contemplative reason, and the desire for aesthetic perfection. Its basic elements are logic and intuition, analysis and construction, generality and individuality.
Richard Courant

With an absurd oversimplification, the "invention" of the calculus is sometimes ascribed to two men, Newton and Leibniz. In reality, the calculus is the product of a long evolution that was neither initiated nor terminated by Newton and Leibniz, but in which both played a decisive part.

Harald Bohr correspondence
The destiny of Harald Bohr's correspondence
The few letters in the Harald Bohr Papers in Copenhagen is a very tiny fraction of the large amount of letters to and from Bohr which once existed. According to Bohr's son, Ole Bohr, Bohr kept the letters he received and organized them well until April 1940 where he destroyed most of them shortly after the German invasion of Denmark. He did that because he was anxious that the Germans should seize on his correspondence and misuse its information about German mathematicians, whom Bohr had helped to leave Germany. According to Asger Aaboe (Yale University), who has had contact with the surviving relatives, the left over of Bohr's collection of correspondence (among other things his correspondence with Godfrey H. Hardy) was kept by Bohr's wife Ulla Bohr for many years, but destroyed by her in the 1970s. There is probably no more correspondence kept by the surviving relatives, at least not any scientific correspondence, and the only part of Bohr's own collection of correspondence which has survived are the letters in the Harald Bohr Papers and some family correspondence (mainly letters to and from his brother Niels) kept in the Family correspondence at the Niels Bohr Archive Hence, the major part of the correspondence listed below is located in other collections. The correspondents are divided in two groups. The first group, which is given alphabetical in a table with links to more details, consists of correspondents where more than one letter to or from Bohr has been conserved. The second group consists of all the minor correspondents where only one letter to or from Bohr has been conserved.

I am very pleased as a member of the Friedrichs family to have been invited to this occasion and especially to be present on this day when a portrait of James Stoker was unveiled.
I was privileged yesterday, together with my brother Walter, to be among those who attended the annual Courant Institute awards ceremony at which numerous awards, including the Kurt Otto Friedrichs Prize, were presented to outstanding students. As I watched the various students receiving these awards, I was reminded again of the way in which the Courant Institute continues to represent a wonderful mixture of native and foreign-born talent.
Meeting the two young men one of Austrian and one of Russian origin, I believe who received the prize named after my father, I was reminded of my father's passionate commitment to the importance of teaching. My father could never imagine doing mathematics in isolation, because he believed that much of what is important in mathematics comes about through teaching. Indeed, when he was offered positions at other institutions at which he would have had no students he turned those offers down. He never would have wanted a career that did not involve teaching others.
Of course his ideas about the importance of teaching came in part from his lifelong connection with his own great teacher, Richard Courant, with whom he studied in Goettingen and with whom he worked for so many years here in New York.

But in 18 years of sermonizing at Church of St. Anne, Ballouville's 80-year-old priest has never mentioned money. S ome residents burn garbage for heat, their bodies carry burns and scars from the factory line, their wages barely cover the $65-a-week rent at John's rooming house. Some have abused drugs, dropped out of high school, seen family violence. But poor? Not to people in Ballouville. Poor is what you see on TV. Poor is urban. Poor is welfare. Poor is dense and dirty. There are clear-running streams here, and lush forests, and front doors that are never locked.
BALLOUVILLE
It is through a post office window that Joan Gosselin beholds life in Ballouville. Dozens of times a day, her gaze is coaxed by the slam of a car door or the fleeting glimpse of a figure passing by. Handing out mail, she provides a symphony of small talk with choruses that echo throughout the day.
